I’ve made a couple of shoulder bags that follow your idea but with a bit more space. For me, add a life straw, minimal first aid kit, bug spray, Sun screen, a hotel sized bar of soap (some carry sanitizer instead), signal mirror and whistle and a pocket New Testament. Oh, and a few trail mix pouches. I’m going to to add bottom straps for a rolled 18”x30” ground pad to sit/kneel on. I’m going to make my own. Waxed canvas on the bottom, wool on top and thinsulate in the middle. I’m hoping to compress it to a 9” wide, 6-7” diameter roll. I realize I’m doubling the weight but it’s a lot of comfort in that small package. Cheers!

Great kit! Simple and covers all the priorities. The only addition I would make is a basic BOO BOO kit. Also, that gel pen you showed in the video will not work on rite-in-the-rain paper! Better off using a pencil...with a small German made sharpener. (Makes great tinder when you sharpen the pencil)...Thanks for the video!

A good option if you own a mora thats in a more neutral color is to wrap the bottom of the handle with a high vis tape of some kind Bright blue, orange, yellow not a perfect option but a good idea if you don't want to buy an orange or high vis mora.

A question. About the fire kit? What about a Bic Lighter and storm matches? If in a survival situation, because fire is so important, having 3 ways to make a fire that are functional easy and practical is more ideal. 1.Bic Lighter 2.Storm Matches 3.Ferro Rod 4. Man Made Tinder. Also another item that is small but ideal for fire starting is a Spark Lite. If your hypothermic and your coordination is off, a Spark Lite or Matches / Bic are ideal for when dealing with dexterity issues too. You don’t want to have an accident with a knife blade when you are in a survival situation. Complex Skills should not be the #1 go to for fire making.
My main 3 ignition sources will always be 1.Bic Light 2. Ferro Rod 3. Mag lens. I don’t think I mentioned a big lighter because I had one in my pocket. I don’t waste my time with matches.
@@buckeyebushcraft If you are teacher at the Pathfinder School. Your behavior reflects on that organization. Some individuals may carry matches because it's another tool in the box to use. Do not look down on others because skill level or experience. If you Jake can get by with minimal equipment thats cool. But a good teacher listens to his students and responds appropriately. I carry Matches a ferro rod a Bic and tinder in my kit. And that is not a “waste of time” as you so bluntly put it. Be open to others ideas on this platform. Show kindness. Set the bar high for how you conduct your self on your channel. And how you interact with you audience. Thank you Jake and Merry Christmas.
@@natashaball316 I didn’t mean to come off as a dick, I’m just saying I don’t waste my time with matches because I carry multiple lighters. Once you use a match you can’t use it again, you can get up to 1000 lights or more with a lighter. So why carry matches when a lighter typically is cheaper, will last longer, and isn’t a one time use item.
Always carry “surefire” or some sort of tinder with you, but as far as ignition sources I carry multiples of the three items I listed. I’ve got no problem with someone carrying matches, hell sometimes I carry them just for traditions sake, but if it’s an emergency kit I’d prefer have a few lighters than a box of matches. Again I wasn’t at all trying to be a dick, sometimes it’s hard for people to read me through messages because I “text” bluntly and straight to the point. I sent ya a DM on Instagram, so we can talk about this some more.
Good kit, I have that same water bottle container. A folded up bandana will also fit in the top of that bag. These items can be combined with your pocket EDC items, such as lighter, whistle. Good video. Alan R.

I have a similarly built one that started as the Pathfinder bottle kit that has a full 10 Cs in it now, if I add my haversack kit I'm set for a pretty bad week in the woods

I really like your kit. Just the basics. Any space for a small petzl headlamp? Some even have whistles on the strap like the E+Lite. I got lost once and the E+Lite had been in my survival kit for years. Helped me build a shelter in the dark and navigate for firewood.
You could definitely add someone like that, but I was really limited on space. I do agree, a light is one of those things that you don’t really need but makes life so much easier😂
@@buckeyebushcraft I have E+Lite and Photon Freedoms, both are great but the E+Lite has greater light output. Both could be secured to the MOLLE webbing on the outside of the kit. It you secure the E+Lite I'd suggest using a zip tie, the Photon lights come with a keyring.
It is a well done kit, too many kits have tiny items of questionable use but yours' has full size items for shelter, fire, water, and nav. The pen and paper is very important should the lost person want to do a measured recon in four or eight directions in an effort to find the trail. Best to stay put and let searchers find you, but there will always be that odd person who goes on a hike without telling anyone where.

Superb! A practical, down to earth, no nonsense kit for the average wanderer. What about adding a mini bottle of disinfectant to use with duct tape to treat small wounds?
You could definitely add something like that. Iodine would be good because u could also use it to disinfect the water.

I think you are missing some important points in this kit.
When you are lost, you want to be found so top priority is signaling the rescue team. Add Garmin inReach Mini 2 satellite messenger, flashlight and whistle.
With that covered, I would add mini BIC lighter instead of the ferro - provides flame easily and it is reliable. Imagine having to use the ferro in heavy rain with cold hands when you are close to hypothermia. Add 2 protein bars - full of energy to give you boost. One small package of salt and one with sugar - to replace lost electrolytes. Add some first aid stuff - antihistamine (for bites - saves lives for allergic people), ibuprofen (to mitigate any kind of pain), Imodium (it's shitty to have diarrhea and dehydrate yourself in an emergency on the trail), and water purification tablets (cannot light fire for whatever reason - still have clean water).
Personally I would ditch the pen, the notebook (although the pages could be used to start the fire), the compass, probably the bank line cordage too.
Better add a small power bank to charge my phone. Download offline maps on the phone so you could use the GPS and the maps without the need of Internet coverage.
If I want to go lighter, I would switch the full tang knife with small swiss army knife (no need to build complete bushcraft shelter and lose energy).
The idea is when you are lost or hurt, you better stay where you are and not get lost somewhere further where the rescue team will not search for you. Simply call for rescue, give GPS coordinates if you have, build a fire, snug in the emergency blanket and relax until found.
I know how to navigate, if I’m “lost” (which I never will be) I’m not waiting on someone to come rescue me.
@@buckeyebushcraft Of course you will never get lost. Hardly anyone gets lost these days when GPS is a thing. However you said this kit is for people who know nothing of bushcraft and shit and they could get lost. What would unexperienced person do with a knife, compass, cord, or ferro? Nothing. If their GPS is not working, they should wait for the rescue team.
@@antaress8128 Any person with a head on their shoulders would get training if they frequent the woods, before building a kit they don’t know how to use.
Is the tube webbing strong enough to make a Swiss seat ? for an emergency repel ? I watched second time and think you answered my question .
Yes it is, I’ve used it for a Swiss seat multiple times.
You should add a Bic lighter, takes up little space weighs next to nothing and is easier to light fires with. It is even still useful once it runs out of gas, provided you have a traditional lighter. Also I would switch out the container with a Titanium grayl ( not released yet at the time of recording this video). Otherwise a very well put together kit.
Clipper lighters still work as sparkers once they run out of fuel, so might be even better in a survival situation.

Looks like you've got a gel pen there. Have you tried to write in the rain on your write in the rain paper with a gel pen? They don't recommend that.
It works okay in the rain, it smears a little but other than that it’s fine
