  • [Links in description] First time picking up the piccolo trumpet? We often get asked about how to start out with piccolo trumpet since many customers are coming to us for their first picc. Here are some quick tips on how to get acclimated to piccolo practice!
Our ACB Doubler's piccolo trumpet is an entry level pro option so I thought it would be a good option for this quick demo. You can pick one up over on our web store: www.austincustombrass.biz/acb...
2:00 Your high range won't be automatically better with a piccolo trumpet. What you DO get is easier slotting and navigation. You also can't just use the same airstream you're used to on your bigger horns. Here's a good way to start out with developing your approach to piccolo:
4:10 1. Play some nice, simple melodies that you know and love. Clarke studies are also a great place to start.
6:00 2. Every 15 minutes of piccolo practice will feel like 30-45 minutes on your Bb. It's a more taxing instrument to play, so make sure to pace yourself.
7:07 3. Don't over inhale! Picc takes a fairly "conversational" airstream, not a lot of force. If you're trying to push too much air, you'll wind up with a lot of excess tension. Try to relax and let the instrument do as much of the work for you as possible.
8:46 4. Do some basic slurs. This is a little more advanced. Start of fairly low, with a 1-3 or 1-2-3 combination. Make sure you're not forcing it or over-energizing the air.
9:30 5. Make sure to choose an appropriate mouthpiece! Also keep in mind that some piccolo trumpet leadpipes take trumpet shank and some take cornet shank mouthpieces.
11:00 6. Listen to great piccolo trumpet players and singers. Try to match the way they seem to float through the music.
11:40 7. Picc might not be the best choice for your first notes of the day! Or your last notes of the day.

Great helpful video Trent. I've been playing the piccolo trumpet since 1973. Here's some of my opinions and observations. Like the B-flat trumpet sound is everything. After all these years I still listen to Maurice Andre and Matthias Höfs almost daily just to get a good sound in my head. I always do about 15 minutes of warm up on the Bb or C before moving to the piccolo. I never start the piccolo cold, for me that equates to disaster. It's very important to get used to the "A" pipe as that is what you will need for most Baroque literature. Back in the day most arrangements were written for trumpet in D or C, so good transposition is a must. I won't go into it here, but what I used was "clef transposition", this was also Andre's approach. To eliminate tightness in the sound I generally use a mouthpiece with a 25 throat verses a stock 27 throat. Here are some mouthpieces I have used: Bach 7E with 25 throat and 117 backbore, Schilke 14A4X and Stomvi 5P. These mouthpieces seem to open up the horn and relieve stress. I believe Andre' used a Bach 7D with a 25 throat and 117 backbore. I was fortunate to have a good piccolo teacher early on. I will say Baroque is where it's at! Torelli, Telemann, Albinoni, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Bach are great places to start. Trent thank you so much for your great videos!

When I started piccolo I loved playing the Getchell book one all the way through. I found there is nothing like playing melodies you know for getting your ear used to the small horn. Maybe one day I’ll return to it, you’ve rekindled my interest. Great video thanks.

Still loving the Yamaha flugelhorn horn I got from ACB. I use it mostly as a volunteer with Bugles Across America. I recently picked up a piccolo trumpet and found Trent’s instructional videos. I’ll be watching for more, thanks!

Very helpful, Trent. In his later years, Claudio Roditi was playing blues on a piccolo trumpet.

What kind of mics are you using and what kind of switch to go back & forth?

She's a wee beastie, but after a few months of practice I'm starting to hear music coming out of the bell. The trick is not to give up. There's a steep curve when you begin.

Hey Trent, What kind of range do you need on the big Bb trumpet to make a serious start on Picc?

Great question! I personally think you need to have a solid high c on the big horns before starting on piccolo. Both can benefit each other's high registers.

Thin sounding piccolo for my taste. What a hard instrument to play 😥🎺
