    // ABOUT THIS VIDEO
    This was my first time using my X-Carve or routing anything on a CNC on my own. I found my way through, and it has me excited about the possibilities this is going to open up! In addition to going over my first project with the X-Carve, I also give my initial impressions of setting up the machine and familiarizing myself with Easel, the software the X-Carve runs off of.

    I've done quite a bit of CNC work, and it's always like that.

    As you get used to using dogbones. You learn that you can make them less visible pretty easy with just bumping them over so they are more centred between both edges. Good project and review. The new kit looks like a dream to assemble compared to the original. Nice video as always :)

    Your assessment of the assembly process is spot on. I thought the directions got harder and harder to interpret the further I got into the build. Nothing too technically challenging, I just didn’t want to have to go back and remount something because the directions weren’t clear.

    Thanks for the clear description and I like your style - entertaining as well as informative.. I have an older X-Carve and it was a kit but, as you said the instructions were good. I did have the same issues with SKUs but not too much of a problem. I don't agree about Easel though. Free is good but I just could not get on with it and made lots of errors with it. I bought Vectric's V-Carve and that suits the way I work - but it isn't cheap. Thanks again and sorry for being long winded :-)

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  6 років тому

      Fair enough. I wonder if Easel has changed since you last used it. I'm pretty handy in illustrator, and I have a plugin for sketchup that let's you convert sketchup files to .SVG. Between those two, I can pretty much just open the file in Easel. Pick the outline option, or fill - depending on what I'm doing. Set the depth...and it's good to go.

    Would you consider using something like this to make your own version of kit furniture? Fans of yours could possibly afford similar things to this table. Limited runs could be forms of extra income and support. But you would have to surrender time to dealing with that, not to mention packing and shipping. Just a thought. Things like finish could be left to the buyer.

    Very useful review of the build process. I think that's something most people don't think about, or at least realize how complicated the process is. How long did it take you to assemble yours? And if you were to help a friend build one of their own, do you think you'd be able to do it faster?

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  6 років тому

      Hey Seth...it took me probably 30 hours, but a lot of the reason it was slow was b/c I did a lot of - an hour here, an hour there, in between other obligations. If you had larger chunks of time to dedicate to it, you could definitely do it much faster. If I were to build it again, I could do it way faster. Especially if it were right after I finished this one :)

      Good...so it wasn't just me being a dum dum :)
      I did notice that their instructions with newer items (the dust collection, etc...) are extremely thorough. I think they just need to get back in there and tweak the actual X-Carve instructions a tiny bit. Again though...I do think they are generally on the happy side of instructions.

    • @makeorbreakshop
      @makeorbreakshop 6 років тому +1

      Yeh totally agree! Almost like each section was written by someone different. Love how you are using it though! Will any of these designs/workflows make their way into the furniture company builds you are working? Especially on the packing side of things?

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  6 років тому

      I don't think so, other than that I might eventually use it to template out some parts for furniture pieces I design. With that company though, I come up with the aesthetics, and I engineer the pieces myself...but then they usually slightly re-engineer things based on their workflow and tool set ups, etc...

    Does Easel ONLY work with the x-carve?? Or will it generate generic G-code that you can then use on another cnc router?? For instance, I like the easel software, but i want to run a different machine...will it work?

    • @Foureyes.Furniture
      @Foureyes.Furniture  6 років тому

      I don't know for sure - but I do know that when you initially calibrate your machine, it asks a series of questions and in the pulldown menu is an option for the Shapeoko. So I'm guessing it at least works with one other machine.

      @Foureyes.Furniture  5 років тому

      I'm not exactly sure what you mean by clearance. But if you're saying how tight should the gap be. You usually have to play with it. 3/4" typically will end up too loose since plywood is 23/32nds. It'll hold together, but it could have a little play. That said, if you end up gluing it together it'll be strong enough. Depending on the design.

    • @dennisrkb
      @dennisrkb 5 років тому

      I wouldn't say showcase, but definitely not making any attempts to hide them. How would you hide them? Maybe make a subtle arc that kisses the outside of the circle portions...so that it isn't as visually abrupt?

      Create a "T-bone" shape, where the radii are covered by the shoulder of the tenon. I'd create a reply video if I could, but I don't have any recording software. I do have Sketchup, though. Is there a way I could send you an illustration? Maybe Facebook?

    How times have changed, I didn’t hear you mention a specific price other than “a hobbiest… not gonna have to spend multiple thousands of dollars to even get your foot in the door”, the cheapest model is now $2600 and for some reason the advertised “1000mm” only gets you 29.5 inches of cutting area which you don’t find out unless you view the separate page comparing it to the Pro model, possibly because the list of resources with the FAQ is an image instead of an actual list of clickable resources which makes the quality of the product suspect if they can’t get their own sales page to work properly, not to mention the fact that the first google link to them after a search leads to a non-existent page so just a 404 error. All this means I wouldn’t spend a dime on their product because it’s incredibly important for a seller to take the time to make sure their website works properly and that their top ranked google result actually leads to an existing page.

    It sounds like the authors / editors of the x-carve documentation got tired / bored as they went along, and wrote less and less as they got further into the assembly process.

      Seems like that may have been part of it. Also, they’ve made many changes and upgrades and haven’t kept up the changes on their instructions, so they got thinned out rather than redone.

      It's funny, I noticed that when I built my X-carve 2 years ago; the calibration step was probably the most bare-bones in terms of details, but also one of the most important!

      I second this. An SVG would be great. Also, if someone asks about a different thicknesses plywood (like 18mm vs. 3/4" vs 23/32") they can just scale every thing a little. So it's good to note with the files what thickness your ply is.

    Title is total clickbait. Dude, you spend like a total of 4 minutes narrating a speeded up clip of your work. You then spend the rest of the video making an infomercial for X Carve. You should call the video what it ACTUALLY IS: A REVIEW of the X Carve CNC.

    I just can't get past the idea that the software that is necessary to use such an expensive machine is "in the cloud". I know instructables says you can use any software, but if you spend time on their support pages, they basically don't support any other software.

    Ok can someone please help me settle a debate between me and my friend.
    He is claiming, that an average man (25 years old) with absolutely 0 woodworking experience can build a bare bones dining table that will not fail for 1 year, with daily use.
    Things to consider:
    1.) The table does not have to be aesthetically pleasing, just functional
    2.) he has no access to outside information (youtube, books, family/peers, etc)
    I 100% disagree and say the table will fail within that year.
    We’d love your input lol. Thanks.

    Honestly. Stick to your normal builds. CNCs are expensive and not real woodworking. This is way below your skills. You’re more focused on the machine not the wood.

      I'm gonna do both. If I had to guess, my content will remain primarily "normal" - just because I think it makes for more interesting videos.

      What about following a template with a router? Is that "doing"? What about printing a page and following it with a band saw and power sanders? There are still a lot of woodworking that compliments CNC work. This project was mostly CNC, but I just made something that involved milling the lumber, using the CNC to do the shaping, then I ran then through the planer to get the right fit, added some scraping, sanding, gluing, finishing. So I didn't use my bandsaw, so what?

    • @TPNL1

      SuperSayainJesus using a fence on a table saw? Freehand it or it’s not woodworking. No wait, use a hand saw or it’s not woodworking.
