Roger died on his own terms, after having achieved everything he wanted, whereas both Oden and Whitebeard died after having lost almost everything they held dear, and Ace's death was pretty much meaningless and could've been avoided. From another angle, Roger's death started a new era and was like a W for the pirate world, whereas Whitebeard, Oden and Ace's deaths brought an era to an end and only affected those connected to them in a negative way. Sure their deaths were great spectacles, but they weren't badass at all. Just sad.

@@lucastham9328 Difference between Roger and Ace compared to Luffy and Dragon is simple. Ace grew up knowing who his father was, and thus experienced the hatred with it. Whereas Luffy grew up not knowing who his father was, not to mention Dragon wasn't as big as Roger was when Luffy and Ace were kids, so when Luffy grew up he can't hate his father when he didn't even know who he was. You can't care about something that doesn't exist to you. Ace on the other hand did which was why he was such an angry and aggressive kid whilst Luffy was more carefree and simple minded. That's why Luffy is fine, much less care, that he's never met his dad.

Even if Luffy's father wasn't a criminal, he would never be a marine. Luffy's heart would never allow him to tolerate the crap that the Celestial Dragon's and the World Government get away with. They treat all their subjects like garbage who's only purpose is to revere them and obey their selfish commands and desires. Robin has a death warrant on her head, not because of any crime she's committed but, because she was raised on an island where some of the people studied the past. And, the marines came and slaughtered everyone, innocent or otherwise, just to ensure that all the archaeologists were killed. I suspect the WG set fire to Luffy and Ace's home in the attempt to kill Ace, a mere child, because he was Gol D Roger's son. The WG stayed quiet about the facts of how White Lead disease was contracted for money's sake and the fact that it wasn't contagious while the neighbors of Law's country slaughtered every inhabitant of his home, infected or otherwise. The WG has many debts to answer for and Luffy would never be able to turn a blind eye to their crimes. Ace isn't likely to have been able to either. The fact that Garp can either means he doesn't know or he is blinded by his oath to the WG. If he does know, then he is a fool to think that Luffy or Ace could have ever followed in his footsteps.

***** It does come down to the age old question of Nature vs Nurture. Some things just are and how the person is raised might mellow that or reinforce it. There really is no question which path Ace would take. From a very young age, he knew who his father was and that the marines wanted him dead because of it. Given that, he wouldn't have changed much regardless of how he was raised. Sabo grew up to take a mentality that was set from a very young age, one so strong that he was adamant about not going home even when he had no memory of what awaited him there. I imagine that Luffy wouldn't have had any other path to choose from given that he grew up with them, bonded with them on a psychological level, and grieved greatly when he learned of Sabo's 'death' at the hands of a Celestial Dragon. I doubt anything would have changed the path he chose. At most, it may have changed the reason he gave Garp when they reunited. For the Luffy that is, the reason is that he always wanted to be a pirate. For the Luffy that may have been, he would never have chosen the marines for the love of his believed-to-be-dead sworn brother. One can argue "What Ifs" all day but some things are set and to change Luffy's choice and disposition would involve changes outside of Garp's reach of influence. Sabo's 'family', the WG, every noble in Sabo's home town, the Celestial Dragons, the marines and all the people who raised Ace, Sabo and Luffy after Garp left all had a hand in Luffy's choice and disposition. Garp really had no chance of convincing Luffy to become a marine. At the very most, he wouldn't have been a pirate either. But then, Luffy is too much like Garp to just stay at home and try to be happy with that. Those two are so much alike that they both fell asleep while Garp had Luffy by the front of his shirt. It is unlikely that Luffy could live the quiet life. It just isn't in him.

There are many petty reasons, each as likely as the next, that could apply but Garp strikes me as duty and oath oriented. It would take a lot for him to go back on his oath to the marines, even for the right reasons. He might even think the WG and the Celestial Dragons are the lesser evil or simply be in it to inspire the people by giving them an example of what a marine is supposed to be. It's hard to say what his reason is.

You are the Legendary Hero of Marines yet your (only?) child becomes the Leader of a World Revolution. Yep. He loves his family very much, and is strict but one thing he never does is take away their freedom. This is seen from his own stance where he never took the Admiral position seemingly because he valued the freedom of a Vice-Admiral much more. And as often with family two things always happen. Either the son/younger brother will either try to imitate the elder family member or go completely opposite to the example set by said family member to carve out their own unique identity. That's why where Ace was the tough, angry brother; Luffy was the simple minded and naive one, with Sabo being the responsible and thoughtful one. Where Garp was the prime example of a World Government Hero, Dragon became the anti-thesis of it. The reason why Dragon and Luffy/Ace chose to not become exemplary Marines is for a younger family member to imitate the elder family member, the elder family member must be admirable and an idol figure to the younger family member. Ace/Luffy definitely do love Garp, maybe even Dragon too, but admire/idolise Garp? With Garp's overtly strict but leniant, disruptive and chaotic personality? No way in hell Garp was a great father figure for his family members.

However, with how WG, royalties and nobles treating people like dirt and how Ace and Luffy from a young age have witnessed that with their own eyes, no matter what Garp done, there is no way they can become Marine. Like all D's, Garp values freedom above all else. And that's why he chooses not to be an admiral as indeed, the WG is corrupt and being an admiral means you have to do exactly as they say, thus loosing his freedom. You loose your freedom if your commander/leader stops you from doing what you want. This is the complete opposite of people under Luffy, Dragon and (even briefly) Ace's command when he was solo. Luffy has people under his command, but since the people under his command shares the same values, they do not have restricted freedom and operate as they wish. This is different if the subordinate has differring morals/values as their leader for example take if someone like Akainu was under Luffy's command, Akainu would have restricted freedom. Why? Because simply Akainu wants to kill people for the sake of justice, propaganda and censorship for what he considers is Absolute Justice. Luffy is the opposite and strives for a Moral/Lazy Freedom, where do what you want and whatever you need to at any cost except the methods are never inhumane or immoral as opposed to Blackbeard who stands for Absolute Freedom (following your goals at literally any costs, so in this case he murders his captain, betrays all of WB crew, sells out Ace, betrays World Government etc.). And we see this conflicting values and morals with leader/subordinates. BB betrayed WB and the Navy due to conflicting values. Aokiji left the Navy due to conflicting values with Akainu. Aokiji felt his freedom to operate and values restricted by Akainu in charge so he left. And ultimately, that's the same with Garp and the post of an Admiral. The WG would have restricted his freedom to what he wanted how he wanted if he became an Admiral. So yeah, we're not really in disagreement about Garp. And that's why I've said Garp to Dragon/Luffy/Ace was never an exemplar father figure- where Garp is happy with his half-freedom as a Vice-Admiral, to them Garp living a life of half-freedom, wasn't what they wanted.
I'm sorry but Ace would never have become a navy soilder with or without Garp's influence. The navy would've find out about Ace's lineage. The sins of the father do not pass onto a child. However in Ace's case, the world treated him as bad as Roger. I feel so bad for ace. Looking for compassion in a world that despised him and his father.
Could have gone either way really. I assume it depends on your rank as Garp is the father of the leader of the Revolutionary Army, grandfather of a famous rookie pirate, and adopted father of a Whitebeard division commander. If Ace was a high enough rank he might have gotten a by too.

i always think about how tough of a position garp was in. he is a man who definitely cares about justice, but not the same justice the gorosei and other higher ranked marines believe in upholding. i mean, roger would never have trusted garp with ace if he didnt think garp was a good man despite being on opposite sides. garp really wanted his boys to become marines because he understands first hand how the people in power hunt after pirates. perhaps garp even thought that as marines, ace and luffy could change the system (and they are, just in different ways). to garp, he wanted them to be marines so even if they lived in a system they dont really believe in (like himself), they could at least avoid persecution from all over the world. i love garp's character and you do truly see how he loves his boys despite being very different.

Garp wasn’t my favorite Marine officer until the Post-Timeskip which is hilarious because people in the Pre-Timeskip era seems to constantly bitch and moan on him much better the Pre-Timeskip era was better than Post-Timeskip era, and the only arc in the Pre-Timeskip era that was the best arc in my opinion was the Skypia arc.

Damn the feels When Ace says his father is Whitebeard and no one else. Ace’s story of his past wasn’t really well shown, but if you think about it, he had a really troublesome past, being surrounded by haters. It went to the extent that he even questioned his grandfather whether he deserved to live or not. It’s not Ace’s fault or anyone’s fault. That’s just how it is, and really sad.

It's not just about that. Whitebeard, of his own free will, chose to be a father to Ace and take him in. he treated Ace as though he mattered and gave him a place to belong and to be loved. To Ace, this is everything.

Portgas D Ace I think it's a little deeper than that, Ace doesn't have a legitimate reason for hating Roger, the world hates Roger because of the lies told about him by the government and because he was the pirate king. Aces' disdain for his father stems from the pain he feels about what his mother had to go through in order for him to be born. Due to the circumstances that his father was partially responsible for, he had to grow up in a world that hated him (Ace) without both of his parents. Ace is using Roger as a lightning rod to vent his frustrations, but even when they talked bad about Roger he'd still get upset. So he didn't necessarily hate his father, but he resented him for his circumstances.

I feel like Garp could've used his sway as "THE hero of the marines" to get Ace something slightly more comfortable in Impel Down. Yes, I am aware of the "hell" that is each and every level of that prison (except the two lowest/highest security levels for some reason) but having handcuffs that weaken/exhaust you holding you in a constantly upright position would be excruciating.

i don't think dragon would come. pirates can do whatever they want for a friend in the crew, but the Revolutionary army is of different nature. You can't go challenge the government just for one person's son. That's also the reason why Sabo didn't acknowledge luffy and ace of everything immediately after he got shot. Revolution army is an underground work.

Dragon could not have been an admiral because the navy only knew Garp was his father until late. that theory is squashed. Its as Robin was explaining that they couldn't link this Revolutionary leader to anyone and yet all along... his roots went back to the marine hero Garp . Ace should have hidden his name like Law did instead of taken his mother's first name "Portgas". He still carried the "D". Obviously this was how the Navy traced him back to his parents

Ace's opinion about his father is a great example of how media effects our views on things honestly.. Roger was a great person but he'd never know sadly.
Such clips and others prove that Luffy is really the real deal and well awarded of the main character title.He is much more emotional than most of the pirates in the One Piece world and though he claims to be a pirate , even if he does good things for others , he doesn't want to be called a hero which can be attributed to his burning passion.Luffy also respects the Marines , those who help others the right way and even though he became a pirate he loves his grandfather.Unlike Ace and Sabo , let's be honest it was only natural for them to be closer together since Luffy is Garp's biological grandson and wanted to have a lot of time with his family.Probably in future arcs , Garp will join Dragon's army and they ll search together for Luffy to reunite as one whole big family.Even if it'll initially be hard cause Luffy will tell Dragon that he cannot call himself his father since he abandoned him when he was a newborn baby.Probably thi'll happen sooner after Wano

Mansouri Seif Gintama won best anime of 2015, plus Gintoki (main character) won best anime character 2 yrs in a row in Japan,, plus the voice actor of Gintoki won best voice actor because of playing Gintoki ,, so yeah its more than good, IT'S GREAT!! it deleted all other anime's from my favorite list and took their place
Gintama only gets good at episode 40 something,, and then gets awesome at episode 60 something,,, then it justs get better and better till it tops any anime you've ever seen... n I've seen A LOT, it beats one piece believe me! it has many concepts, a mixture of history drama comedy parody sci-fi, pirates, politics. It has serious arcs concerning its plot,, and it has random episodes and it has crazy funny arcs... it's amazing, ask any fan of it they'll tell you the same thing as I did, Gintama beats any anime they ever saw!!!

Roger died on his own terms, after having achieved everything he wanted, whereas both Oden and Whitebeard died after having lost almost everything they held dear, and Ace's death was pretty much meaningless and could've been avoided. From another angle, Roger's death started a new era and was like a W for the pirate world, whereas Whitebeard, Oden and Ace's deaths brought an era to an end and only affected those connected to them in a negative way. Sure their deaths were great spectacles, but they weren't badass at all. Just sad.

Ace grew up knowing who his father was, and thus experienced the hatred with it.
Whereas Luffy grew up not knowing who his father was, not to mention Dragon wasn't as big as Roger was when Luffy and Ace were kids, so when Luffy grew up he can't hate his father when he didn't even know who he was. You can't care about something that doesn't exist to you. Ace on the other hand did which was why he was such an angry and aggressive kid whilst Luffy was more carefree and simple minded. That's why Luffy is fine, much less care, that he's never met his dad.

Even if Luffy's father wasn't a criminal, he would never be a marine. Luffy's heart would never allow him to tolerate the crap that the Celestial Dragon's and the World Government get away with. They treat all their subjects like garbage who's only purpose is to revere them and obey their selfish commands and desires. Robin has a death warrant on her head, not because of any crime she's committed but, because she was raised on an island where some of the people studied the past. And, the marines came and slaughtered everyone, innocent or otherwise, just to ensure that all the archaeologists were killed. I suspect the WG set fire to Luffy and Ace's home in the attempt to kill Ace, a mere child, because he was Gol D Roger's son. The WG stayed quiet about the facts of how White Lead disease was contracted for money's sake and the fact that it wasn't contagious while the neighbors of Law's country slaughtered every inhabitant of his home, infected or otherwise. The WG has many debts to answer for and Luffy would never be able to turn a blind eye to their crimes. Ace isn't likely to have been able to either.
The fact that Garp can either means he doesn't know or he is blinded by his oath to the WG. If he does know, then he is a fool to think that Luffy or Ace could have ever followed in his footsteps.
***** I question whether it would be safer. Ace and Luffy live with their hearts on their sleeves. There is no guile or deception when it comes to their feelings. The ones around them will know it. All it would take is ONE instance of someone crossing the wrong line for them to show their true disposition and it could've gotten them killed on the spot. Akainu may have killed them as an example. A Celestial Dragon would have killed them just for daring to respond for even a second in such a manner.
***** It does come down to the age old question of Nature vs Nurture. Some things just are and how the person is raised might mellow that or reinforce it.
There really is no question which path Ace would take. From a very young age, he knew who his father was and that the marines wanted him dead because of it. Given that, he wouldn't have changed much regardless of how he was raised. Sabo grew up to take a mentality that was set from a very young age, one so strong that he was adamant about not going home even when he had no memory of what awaited him there. I imagine that Luffy wouldn't have had any other path to choose from given that he grew up with them, bonded with them on a psychological level, and grieved greatly when he learned of Sabo's 'death' at the hands of a Celestial Dragon. I doubt anything would have changed the path he chose.
At most, it may have changed the reason he gave Garp when they reunited. For the Luffy that is, the reason is that he always wanted to be a pirate. For the Luffy that may have been, he would never have chosen the marines for the love of his believed-to-be-dead sworn brother. One can argue "What Ifs" all day but some things are set and to change Luffy's choice and disposition would involve changes outside of Garp's reach of influence. Sabo's 'family', the WG, every noble in Sabo's home town, the Celestial Dragons, the marines and all the people who raised Ace, Sabo and Luffy after Garp left all had a hand in Luffy's choice and disposition. Garp really had no chance of convincing Luffy to become a marine. At the very most, he wouldn't have been a pirate either. But then, Luffy is too much like Garp to just stay at home and try to be happy with that. Those two are so much alike that they both fell asleep while Garp had Luffy by the front of his shirt. It is unlikely that Luffy could live the quiet life. It just isn't in him.
***** A blind single-mindedness to duty or a strict adherence to his word could be why Garp can tolerate being a marine. There are many petty reasons, each as likely as the next, that could apply but Garp strikes me as duty and oath oriented. It would take a lot for him to go back on his oath to the marines, even for the right reasons. He might even think the WG and the Celestial Dragons are the lesser evil or simply be in it to inspire the people by giving them an example of what a marine is supposed to be. It's hard to say what his reason is.

You are the Legendary Hero of Marines yet your (only?) child becomes the Leader of a World Revolution. Yep. He loves his family very much, and is strict but one thing he never does is take away their freedom. This is seen from his own stance where he never took the Admiral position seemingly because he valued the freedom of a Vice-Admiral much more.
And as often with family two things always happen. Either the son/younger brother will either try to imitate the elder family member or go completely opposite to the example set by said family member to carve out their own unique identity. That's why where Ace was the tough, angry brother; Luffy was the simple minded and naive one, with Sabo being the responsible and thoughtful one. Where Garp was the prime example of a World Government Hero, Dragon became the anti-thesis of it. The reason why Dragon and Luffy/Ace chose to not become exemplary Marines is for a younger family member to imitate the elder family member, the elder family member must be admirable and an idol figure to the younger family member. Ace/Luffy definitely do love Garp, maybe even Dragon too, but admire/idolise Garp? With Garp's overtly strict but leniant, disruptive and chaotic personality? No way in hell Garp was a great father figure for his family members.

That just goes back to the original point of why Garp's not an admiral- freedom. Like all D's, Garp values freedom above all else. And that's why he chooses not to be an admiral as indeed, the WG is corrupt and being an admiral means you have to do exactly as they say, thus loosing his freedom. You loose your freedom if your commander/leader stops you from doing what you want.
This is the complete opposite of people under Luffy, Dragon and (even briefly) Ace's command when he was solo. Luffy has people under his command, but since the people under his command shares the same values, they do not have restricted freedom and operate as they wish. This is different if the subordinate has differring morals/values as their leader for example take if someone like Akainu was under Luffy's command, Akainu would have restricted freedom. Why? Because simply Akainu wants to kill people for the sake of justice, propaganda and censorship for what he considers is Absolute Justice. Luffy is the opposite and strives for a Moral/Lazy Freedom, where do what you want and whatever you need to at any cost except the methods are never inhumane or immoral as opposed to Blackbeard who stands for Absolute Freedom (following your goals at literally any costs, so in this case he murders his captain, betrays all of WB crew, sells out Ace, betrays World Government etc.). And we see this conflicting values and morals with leader/subordinates. BB betrayed WB and the Navy due to conflicting values. Aokiji left the Navy due to conflicting values with Akainu. Aokiji felt his freedom to operate and values restricted by Akainu in charge so he left.
And ultimately, that's the same with Garp and the post of an Admiral. The WG would have restricted his freedom to what he wanted how he wanted if he became an Admiral.
So yeah, we're not really in disagreement about Garp. And that's why I've said Garp to Dragon/Luffy/Ace was never an exemplar father figure- where Garp is happy with his half-freedom as a Vice-Admiral, to them Garp living a life of half-freedom, wasn't what they wanted.
I'm sorry but Ace would never have become a navy soilder with or without Garp's influence. The navy would've find out about Ace's lineage. The sins of the father do not pass onto a child. However in Ace's case, the world treated him as bad as Roger. I feel so bad for ace. Looking for compassion in a world that despised him and his father.

This whole bloody arc was a big rollercoaster of emotions, I felt when garp cried for ace
i always think about how tough of a position garp was in. he is a man who definitely cares about justice, but not the same justice the gorosei and other higher ranked marines believe in upholding. i mean, roger would never have trusted garp with ace if he didnt think garp was a good man despite being on opposite sides. garp really wanted his boys to become marines because he understands first hand how the people in power hunt after pirates. perhaps garp even thought that as marines, ace and luffy could change the system (and they are, just in different ways). to garp, he wanted them to be marines so even if they lived in a system they dont really believe in (like himself), they could at least avoid persecution from all over the world. i love garp's character and you do truly see how he loves his boys despite being very different.

It's not just about that. Whitebeard, of his own free will, chose to be a father to Ace and take him in. he treated Ace as though he mattered and gave him a place to belong and to be loved. To Ace, this is everything.

Portgas D Ace I think it's a little deeper than that, Ace doesn't have a legitimate reason for hating Roger, the world hates Roger because of the lies told about him by the government and because he was the pirate king. Aces' disdain for his father stems from the pain he feels about what his mother had to go through in order for him to be born. Due to the circumstances that his father was partially responsible for, he had to grow up in a world that hated him (Ace) without both of his parents. Ace is using Roger as a lightning rod to vent his frustrations, but even when they talked bad about Roger he'd still get upset. So he didn't necessarily hate his father, but he resented him for his circumstances.

I feel like Garp could've used his sway as "THE hero of the marines" to get Ace something slightly more comfortable in Impel Down. Yes, I am aware of the "hell" that is each and every level of that prison (except the two lowest/highest security levels for some reason) but having handcuffs that weaken/exhaust you holding you in a constantly upright position would be excruciating.

i don't think dragon would come. pirates can do whatever they want for a friend in the crew, but the Revolutionary army is of different nature. You can't go challenge the government just for one person's son. That's also the reason why Sabo didn't acknowledge luffy and ace of everything immediately after he got shot. Revolution army is an underground work.

Dragon could not have been an admiral because the navy only knew Garp was his father until late. that theory is squashed. Its as Robin was explaining that they couldn't link this Revolutionary leader to anyone and yet all along... his roots went back to the marine hero Garp . Such clips and others prove that Luffy is really the real deal and well awarded of the main character title.He is much more emotional than most of the pirates in the One Piece world and though he claims to be a pirate , even if he does good things for others , he doesn't want to be called a hero which can be attributed to his burning passion.Luffy also respects the Marines , those who help others the right way and even though he became a pirate he loves his grandfather.Unlike Ace and Sabo , let's be honest it was only natural for them to be closer together since Luffy is Garp's biological grandson and wanted to have a lot of time with his family.Probably in future arcs , Garp will join Dragon's army and they ll search together for Luffy to reunite as one whole big family.Even if it'll initially be hard cause Luffy will tell Dragon that he cannot call himself his father since he abandoned him when he was a newborn baby.Probably thi'll happen sooner after Wano

Mansouri Seif Gintama won best anime of 2015, plus Gintoki (main character) won best anime character 2 yrs in a row in Japan,, plus the voice actor of Gintoki won best voice actor because of playing Gintoki ,, so yeah its more than good, IT'S GREAT!! it deleted all other anime's from my favorite list and took their place

Gintama only gets good at episode 40 something,, and then gets awesome at episode 60 something,,, then it justs get better and better till it tops any anime you've ever seen... n I've seen A LOT, it beats one piece believe me! it has many concepts, a mixture of history drama comedy parody sci-fi, pirates, politics. It has serious arcs concerning its plot,, and it has random episodes and it has crazy funny arcs... it's amazing, ask any fan of it they'll tell you the same thing as I did, Gintama beats any anime they ever saw!!!
