    Great and informative video! I totally love the fact that I had a major surgery and was totally pain free for the first few hours afterward! I will be having my other knee replacement soon and totally have peace of mind that I did not have for the first one. I no longer feel I need to be under general anesthesia, love waking up and being alert and I will choose spinal or epidural any day over general!

    What causes a spinal or epidural to go high and the patient can't feel herself breathing?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 роки тому

      Hi Sharon. This is a very rare complication where the medication tracks upward and affects the nerves as high as C3-5 which are involved in moving the diaphragm. Depending on the severity, the patient may require temporary intubation while those nerves were allowed to recover. Hope that helps. I’ve been left with permanent nerve damage as a result of the spinal I had when I had my knee replaced. I lost all use of my quads post op. I had a steroid injection in my back 8 months later which did give me some quad use, so I’m no longer dragging my leg, but if I step wrong, my leg will collapse. I had a second steroid injection, with no improvement. I will never have another spinal!

      @TalkingWithDocs  3 роки тому

      @@TalkingWithDocs all I was told from the emg was there was nerve damage at the site in my spine right where I had the spinal. I had immediate improvement with the first steroid shot, like I could feel a change in my thigh right after I got off the table. It kept improving for a couple of weeks, then stopped. I’m angry that it took so many months before anything was done about my leg and wonder if I might have had a better outcome if I had the steroid shot sooner. My ortho just poo pooed me when I complained about the loss of function in my leg and kept saying to wait as the quads should just come back on their own. I can’t run, can’t step up with that leg, walking is an effort and is exhausting and painful after a few minutes. I’ve essentially been crippled.

    I had a horrible csf leak headache after my tkr. For my first week it was just awful and unfortunately the doctors did not recognize it until 3 days later. I was already home and could not get my head higher than my body without excruciating pain. I was in so much pain in the hospital that I kept asking for more drugs. That probably caused them to miss it. I couldn’t bear to think about riding in a car back to the hospital for the blood patch, so let it heal on its own. Awful experience.
