Author Margaret Mitchell discovered the property while the book was being adapted into the Oscar-winning movie. Though Mitchell wasn't involved in the film adaptation of her classic, she did reach out to producer David O. Selznick’s company with a newspaper clipping featuring the Georgia mansion. She suggested that they use it for Ashley Wilkes’s family home Twelve Oaks.
They listened to her. However, the film was shot entirely in and around Los Angeles, CA, and the long shot of Wilkes' mansion is actually a painting (even with the carriages moving #moviemagic ). The rest of Wilkes' mansion was shot on the backlot in Culver City or at the long-gone Busch Gardens in Pasadena, an estate built by the Busch brewing family. Check it out on our PapMap.
Located in Covington, Georgia, the mansion is now up for sale with Target Auctions. A private home early on, it more recently served as an award-winning bed and breakfast, event venue, tourist destination, and a stunning backdrop for over 15 movies. Covington, Georgia, a city known as the “Hollywood of the South” because so many movies and television shows have been filmed there, including 2014’s Selma, 2002’s Sweet Home Alabama, and 2000’s Remember the Titans.

The house was built in 1836 and received a $2M renovation in 2017. With over 10,000 sq. Ft., the 12-bedroom, 11½-bath property also offers a grand dining room, formal parlor, informal dining and living spaces, and a chef's dream kitchen. Other features include hardwood floors, period lighting, 11-foot ceilings, and 12 fireplaces modernized with remote controls. While the outdoor amenities include 3 acres of gardens, a poolside chandelier-lit gazebo, a massive deck with a pergola and a four-car carriage house.

I believe the inside of the house was filmed in LA.
I think that Margaret Mitchell offered a photo of it (from a newspaper clipping) to the production as an inspiration for Twelve Oaks, which is in itself a 'fictitious' house. But she was probably referring to the 'exterior' look of the house. She may have also been referring to its interior too but the filmmakers had more grandiose plans for its 'look,' pictorially.

That's not the house featured in the movie ! I remember hearing that it was demolished. back in the 70's !!!
Well idk how many different houses they filmed in but the house here in bay view Michigan is still standing where they completed the movie

Ashley’s family mansion WAS NEVER BUILT for the movie…the outside of it was a painting in glass…the inside staircase was built on a soundstage….the ceiling was another painting…this video knows nothing
