  • Slide technique is one of the most important aspects of trombone playing. Accuracy and efficiency of movement with the slide can drastically improve your technique as a trombonist. In this video I share several tips to help your slide technique, like how to use your wrist to move the slide while leaving the elbow in place; and I also play a few examples of how the use of alternate positions can create a more fluid motion for the arm, making your more difficult passages a lot easier to play.

    slide technique is never mentioned enough. Learning that coordination definitely make playing trombone easier. Thanx!

      Slide technique does get overlooked. The horn is easier to play when you’re not moving the slide all over the place. Thanks for checking out the video!

      Thanks for checking out the video. Man my manger/wife finds this stuff for me, I just stick my head through the hole. More then likely a google search of trombone t-shirts will point you in the right direction.

      Thank you for checking out the videos! Generally, if I have to play loud on a performance I’ll practice whisper tones in my warm up. 5-10 min a day is good but it’s more important how you practice them then how long you practice them.

    I am a leftie, a south paw. Can one switch the bell over to the right and mouthpiece to the left? Could you explore this subject for us lefthanded trombone players. I am a raw beginner.

    • @TheChopsShop
      @TheChopsShop  3 роки тому +3

      It’s possible to play left handed. One of the greatest trombonist ever Slide Hampton plays lefty (even though he’s right handed). It’s not something I can demonstrate, that’s a whole different set of brain wiring . Watch some Slide’s videos for inspiration.

    I'm in a high school band in Louisiana and we don't have the best instruments and the way your slide glides my sticks kinda , but it still moves decently but I need more arm ant tips?

    Hey Dion, I have a question, is it ok to move your elbow when you are moving from 1st to 5th position?

    • @TheChopsShop
      @TheChopsShop  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, when going to 5th position there will be some movement in the elbow unless you’re really tall. I like to think of my elbow position in two parts. What will get me from 1-4 position. What will get me from 5-7th position. Hopefully that helps.

    Hi Dion, what make and model is the trombone you are using in this video?

    • @TheChopsShop
      @TheChopsShop  3 роки тому +3

      I play a Shires custom model. It’s nickel plated on the outside and gold on the inside. It’s a triple bore setup that goes from .495 in the slide to .508 at the bell. I’m gonna make a video about it one day!😊

    • @10dennis10
      @10dennis10 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheChopsShop I play Shires too. Fantastic horns. How does the nickel plating affect the sound?

    • @TheChopsShop
      @TheChopsShop  3 роки тому +1

      The nickel plating makes the horn a little brighter. It definitely cuts through more so it’s great for playing lead, salsa gigs or small horn section work. It helps you get that edge with having to work so damn hard!
