I STILL can’t believe I saw her live! I went on the first night, and watching her sing that song was a religious experience. She was literally so perfect.
I think they're both great because they're both going for two different things. Cathrine O'hara is not a professionally trained singer, she has a lot of cracks in her voice, but that works perfectly for the context of the movie. It's an intimate, sad, scene with a shy, lonely character. Sally doesn't sound like a well practiced singer like the rest of the bombastic characters of the film, but the cracks in her voice fits with her character and give the scene an air of sincerity. Here Billy IS a professional singer, in the context of a live concert and she sounds like one. I appreciate that both versions exist in the context that they do.

Billie’s voice overall is more similar to Sally’s, and for obvious reasons, she sang it more as if she was trying to BE Sally. And another thing we have to remember, the original recording from the movie is definitely not technically perfect. I feel like that was an intentional decision by Elfman, to kind of humanize sally more if that makes sense? Like giving her a nice voice, but not making her sound like a Disney princess. And I feel like Billie embodied that very well. She really did a great job!
I was there!! I don’t think I’ve ever sobbed as hard as I did the second she started singing. My mom and I have always adored the nightmare before christmas and we bought these tickets way far in advance before it was announced she would be the guest appearance. Her performance was absolutely amazing. I wish I could be there again. :’)
