This time on Did You Know Food, we take a look at the history of McDonald's, including how the chain started out as a hot dog stand, how the company was restructured to focus on burgers, fries and milkshakes, and how people would get Happy Meals just for the toys.

Bonus McDonald's Fact: During the 1968 Winter Olympics, McDonald airlifted food to homesick U.S. Athletes in France.
You got to do an episode on Dr pepper plz
9:25 maybe it's because im just a stupid 15 year old, but what does a millennial/being a millennial mean?
I'd really appreciate it if you guys didn't 'just' talk about junk food, by the way. Perhaps you guys could do videos on those "Whole Foods" stores, or entire episodes focusing on fruits and vegetables, including Acai Berries, Kale and other, healthier foods. I'm not saying you should STOP making videos on junkier foods altogether, I'm just saying it might be a cool idea.
*Did You Know Food? - In-N-Out Burger*
^(Please make a video like that)^
Found the vegan. So plese tell me what could be so interesting about these, except that they are healthy and good for you ? Was there some kind of interesting story behind it, or maybe it has some funny fact about it ?
The answer is no. So how the hell are these fellers supposed to make a video about it that people actually want to watch huh ?
I'm just saying it might be a bad idea.
I think I'm going to regret subscribing to this channel in the future because of how hungry it's going to make me.
I already got something in the microwave.
Very true.
Luckily this video on McDonalds killed my appetite
you can always unsubscribe lol
this just makes me hungry for mcdonalds.

They replaced Ronald McDonald with boxes.
What? I dont get it
@@Greendogblue I think he's talking about those creepy kids meal mascots with the bulging eyes.
Sad but true
But why tho

Mentioning Super Size Me was an... interesting place to include 8-bit Steam Gardens.
Not mentioned was the hitjob nature of the film. Of course if you order Big Macs and fries, you won’t do well. There’s other stuff too.
The Founder starring Michael Keaton is such a good film. It's a must watch for everyone.
Poor mcdonalds brothers
Loved the video, but that 8bit music playing the entire episode seems out of place in an episode about food.
Skraps I’m actually not one hundred percent sure, but the music sounds to me as though it comes from McKids, the NES game that was essentially a McDonald’s promotion
Unless it's 8-bit Kirby music, then it would be kind of more fitting
it's kinda weird that they then used music from mario kart 8 and mario odyssey as well
McKids will likely be the one exception here, sides maybe YoNoid there aren't too many other food sponsor games with a distinct soundtrack.
@@superstarxalien169 well it is sweet sweet canyon.
The issue I have with the Super Size Me movie is that the guy went from a vegetarian diet to nothing but fast food. Health concerns or not, he was going to get worse anyway lol! Not only was he putting nothing but bad stuff in his body, he was also shifting his body's nutrient habits for sure.
Mcdonalds food actually does have nutrients, it's just packed with salt sugar and fats which make it unhealthy
Spurlock's documentary is obsolete. But it's true that you need to worry about your health. Yes, mcdonalds doesn't care about your health, so take matters into your own hands.
Wasn’t it proven that the Super Size Me dude fabricated some of his results?
Yes
Yes, there's actually a person who has eaten an average of two Big Macs every day of his life for the past 46 years. His name is Don Gorske. He ate his 30,000th Big Mac last May. He is 64, has low cholesterol and ran the San Diego marathon in 2006. He's probably an atypical example, but he's proof that there's more to taking care of yourself besides eating more fruits and vegetables.
Everyone needs to see this comment. It's not just that movie. A surprising amount of documentaries are completely full of shit.
@@TigerNightmare thats exactly what i mean, i eat almost anything healthy and unhealty food. But i also do excercise, obviosly im not an athlete, and im not all that fat lol
He didn't exactly fabricate them, but he did create the perfect environment to exacerbate them. He completely stopped near all physical activity, for example.
Was anybody else forced to watch Supersize Me in health class?
Not me. I watched it one day while surfing through Comcast’s On Demand service (This was roughly a couple of years before streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu became as big as they are today) and I was genuinely intrigued by it so I watched the whole documentary.
Shame it turned out to be full of shit, but I don’t feel like my time was wasted. Plus the theme it had was kind of catchy.
Yes.
I was forced to watch it in health
Yes. I'm more curious to if they still have people watch it, as it eventually came out some of the stuff in the movie was pretty fabricated, and some did the "Supersize Me challenge" and actually lost weight.
I was... and if anyone refused to watch it, they were called supporters of childhood obesity in the school's newsletter.
everyone should watch The Founder, with Michael Keaton
yeah, good movie.
Good movie
such a great movie. i was hoping they’d touch on what an actual piece of shit ray kroc (sp?) was, but i guess not. i couldn’t recommend that movie more.
Pedro Verri is it on Netflix?
@@MazterP28 It is on Netflix as of the posting of my comment, and I agree it's worth watching, and while Ray Kroc might have been an asshole at least he did something good with his money donating it to the Salvation Army.
Super size me was such a dumb, stupid, argument.
"It turns out that if i eat junk food for a month, im going to be un healthy! What a shocker!"
i mean, yea. but it's still a good film to watch.
The film does a great job in emphasizing the obesity problem that is still pretty prevalent in the US. Companies like McDonald's target a lot of poor areas specifically which leads to a correlation between poor diet and poverty.
We're gonna get Did You Know everything at this point.

I miss the old Mcdonald's interior designs. Such nostalgia.
I remember when the teenie beanie babies were in the McDonald's happy meals. I waa appalled then upon hearing that people bought the happy meal just for the toy and threw the food away! How could people be so wasteful?! I had bought those happy meals myself during the promotion but I ate the food! Not wasted it!

Same I had to make sure it legit. Then I heard the voice
Something I find weird about international Mcdonalds is that they don't seem to care as much about the 'Mc' prefix at the bigging of their food.
For example in the UK the only menu items I can think of that have 'Mc' in the name is McFlurry and McMuffin.
That is probably because in Europe they lost a court case which verdict was they can't have a monopoly or copyright on the prefix on mc
Mcnuggets
Fun fact about "Super Size Me", no short term or long term research group has ever duplicated his results. It's also well known with a little research that his proclaimed caloric intake doesn't match what he claims to have eaten. I'm by no means saying McDonald's is healthy, but super size me is another example of a documentary that was largely faked. Still probably wouldn't want to copy that diet though, it's not as bad as he claimed, but it's still bad.
Can't imagine it'd be fun.
@@Igarappappa Probably a lot of time in the latrine.
I hope/wish McDonald’s will do a little limited time throwback thing with their bags, wrappings, boxes, and such. Just for nostalgia. I’m sure it would bring a lot of profit.
That Jurassic Park advert is So Classic
Are you going to put the DYK Taco Bell video with Andrew W.K. On here or are you going to make a new updated one? Also just finished watching all the videos here! Great stuff and happy to see you guys expanding!
I want to see them talk about the sand in the tacos.
Lil fun fact in the netherlands on the 30th of april 2013 when the country finally got a king and queen again after the previous queen stepped down almost every single mcdonalds in the country turned its golden arch upside down as a tribute to the new kings name which starts with a W (Willem-Alexander)
You should have mentioned Supersize Me was also a extremely biased and flawed experiment....I mean he was a Vegan for one.

we've had the new bar designed McDonalds in the uk for like 10 years now, and recently many McDonalds have been updated to an open plan, wooden design, with larger menu displays, and less colourfull tables to give off a "modern" feel.

Don't call Supersize Me a documentary. That implies that anything he did in it was true.
It's more like a docudrama than anything else.
@@CommodoreFan64 It's more like completely fabricated nonsense that has been disproved by multiple sources.
@@The__Creeper that's my point he has documenting it, while making it dramatic to get the outcome he wanted.
@@CommodoreFan64 By that logic, Law and Order is also a "docudrama".
The entire thing was completely fabricated. He ate McDonald's food and that was the only part that was true. There are also stories in Law and Order based on real events. www.dailybreak.com/break/law-and-order-episodes-based-on-real-events
Eating "unhealthy" foods does not immediately lead to gaining weight or any of the other nonsense he claimed. www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2006/sep/07/healthandwellbeing.health
Also, it should be noted that eating 5000 calories a day at McDonald's is not nearly as easy as it sounds especially going by the "rules" in the "documentary". This is why calling it a documentary is nonsense. It would be like calling White Wilderness or Nanook of the North a documentary. When every important aspect of it is faked, how can it be a documentary? How can something like Die Hard not be considered a documentary by that logic?
Exactly it’s freaking nonsense of course you’re going to get fatter if you do nothing and over do it. Blaming McDonald’s because your fat is ridiculous. I eat at McDonald’s a decent bit and I’ve actually lost weight so there’s that
For me and my family back in the 90s, McDonalds was pretty rare, me and my family went to one for the first time in 2000 when i was 5 and we had a horribly bad experience, almost 10 years later we started going to McDonalds regularly and once we finally tried Burger King, we thought that it was better and decided eating that instead. For context, Burger King here has more qualit, its cheaper and emptier than McDonalds, so in the end we got the food faster.
My bad experience was that i in my Happy Meal they added chili by accident, not only that but the food was in poor quality, the games where insecure for kids, the local closed early after because the kitchen was infested with rats.

Wonderful.
Being a glutton is one of the seven deadly sins.
Feel like the music is a bit to loud on this episode..
gladeator404 if you listen to the music that plays throughout the game McKids (an NES game that was essentially McDonald’s promotion) you’ll realize why it’s probably so loud
Interesting tidbit about the interior theming revamp you guys brought up. I live in Canada and how McD looks now has been here for a while, so hearing that America only started that trend in 2015 is baffling.
Congrats on the new channel!
Also, for anyone who hasn't seen it, The Founder is an excellent movie to watch. Michael Keaton plays a delightful scumbag inn the movie, worth checking out.

As a millennial, I don't really "dislike" McD's as a brand, I just know the food is among the most unhealthy of any fast food joint, so I only eat there like once or twice a year.
As much as I like McDonald’s, I actually believe that their portions seem a bit small. Big Macs aren’t as big as they sound.

Forget the haters guys. I think this is a great new channel and I am looking forward to learning more.
McDonalds is great accomodation food for autistic folks like me. It's specifically because it's relatively bland that I can actually eat their food. They saved me from a lot of evenings going to bed without anything in my stomach because I didn't have the mental energy to cook anything.
I can applaud their efforts for healthier food, but only if they also keep their more bland options for folks like me that need something reliable over something good.
Because it's SO mentally taxing to pop a Hot Pocket in the microwave compared to driving out to McDonalds.
@@choo_choo_ But what if you don't like Hot Pockets?
Hot pockets aren't around here in France, and going to the store is even more mentally demanding than going to McDs.
i love that you played the steam gardens song from mario odyssey!
Extra fact: This company has a massive staff of researchers to tailor their menus to local tastes. You can get wings and green tea ice cream in China, or beer in Germany, for example.
I totally dig the music from Mckids. I used to play that NES game a lot as a kid.

_"Now We Know"_
_(And We're Lovin It)_
I know, not all McDonald's are like the one I worked at but that being said if you were to ask me if McDonald's had a negative effect on my town I'd say yes (or at least the town I was born in).
I worked at this McDonald's in a ghetto town in Canada from 2004-2011 when I was a kid to young adult. There was no such thing as an eight-hour shift. Most employees were booked for either 24 hour or 48-hour shifts. I was part-time because I was in school so I only worked like 4 pm til midnight. I remember this one week they booked my boss, a middle-aged Aboriginal guy who's just dedicated and soft-spoken for a 120-hour shift---that's right five fucking days straight. If they had any time they'd let you sleep for maybe 45 mins but the rest of the time it was go, go, go. My boss made it four days and six hours before he jumped into the recycling dumpster for a nap. One of the managers found him and told him he wouldn't be paid then said: "Go home, you don't work here anymore until we decide you do."
There weren't any bathroom breaks if you went to use the facilities the supervisors would angrily bang on the door. They'd be screaming profanities and threatening you with temporary or permanent demotions until you got out. Then they'd follow you around screaming "hey fucko think you're better than me? I'M TALKING TO YOU! DON'T WALK AWAY FROM ME." When it came to collecting your paycheque you first had to listen to the general manager list every mistake you've ever made and go on a long speech about how they should have fired you and would have if they weren't so nice.
The woman who owned our store needed people to help take down the old McDonalds while they got ready to open the new one the next day. So she offered to buy us Subway and came back with ham and cheese (despite asking us all what we wanted on them). The subs tasted off but we had an extra boost of energy so we agreed to stay all night. That boost of energy was like being on Cocaine and Adderal at the same time. The next day she straight up told us that she put caffeine pills in our subs because she needed us to work.
A few years later the labour relations found out what was happening and cracked down hard on them, making them adhere to provincial guidelines. When I come to visit my family I go to that McDonald's and hear employees complaining about working 8 hours a day six days a week and I just want to laugh and say "buddy that's peanuts, wait until you hear what it was like when I worked here."
Wow, I thought the Golden Arches were supposed to be fries :P

8:38 I actually remember watching this in Middle School in PE
A fun fact about me: I ate at the McDonald’s in Sedona, Arizona with the turquoise logo on the tenth anniversary of 9/11. It’s in an absolutely beautiful area of the state. There was a small group of us High-school seniors and our two chaperons that were heading back from a weekend retreat that Sunday and we went in for breakfast. I don’t remember what I got to eat though I remember that it was fresh, since they had just opened for the day, and delicious. There was a young lady on that trip that was one of the most beautiful girls I had met in my life up to that point and we sat outside looking up at the red rocks on the mountain side. The weather was as perfect as you could ever hope it to be. We talked about where we were and what we remembered from the day of the attacks and I will never forget how surreal it felt to be eating a delicious breakfast with my friends having just spent the weekend celebrating and talking about the next chapter of our lives, standing next to that beautiful girl, surrounded by natural beauty while remembering, mourning, and taking a moment of silence for the dead and their loved ones. It’s a moment of gratitude and humility that will remain with me as long as I live.
