I look at photos of me at 40 and I can't believe how much better my skin looks now at 52. Thanks for all of your research. It helps me so much. Xo, Tracy.

    Angie-I'm 46, and started using retin-A using your recommendation. I've had hooded eyelids my whole life, but this stuff has made them look so much better. I increased to the .01, six months ago, and agree it is helping with discoloration. Hands down best anti-aging suggestion ever!

    This is a total support comment. If I'm not mistaken, you were the first beauty UA-cam (ER) I watched after googling for a review on some product. Since then you've become my Allure magazine, Paula's Choice, etc. I've found you to be completely forthcoming, honest, and genuine. Cannot see why anyone would call you 'fake' or give your videos thumbs down. ❤️

      +pro log we should keep in touch! I'll be 40 in June. Last summer I got lazy, no makeup and never used sunscreen. When I noticed the damage I had done I went on full scale defense. I have to keep reminding myself that Angie been doing her skincare for 3 yrs not 3 months lol. Its frustrating when results aren't seen immediately. But I know now I will see results if I commit and be diligent with my skin care!

    Jean Benton. Angie, my daughter introduced me to you two years ago when I turned 70. I started Retin-A immediately. I am so pleased with the improvements in my skin. I did not think I would see much difference at my age but it is amazing! I just wanted to look as well as I could but it is SO much better than that. I get guessed as in my 50's. I started using Retin-A at age 22 and have been using it on and off over the years stopping during the time I was pregnant and breastfeeding my children. I turned 50 last year and still had trouble with hyperpigmentation (age spots) on my cheeks, forehead and chin/jaw area. I started using the Obagi system to lighten my skin and mixing it with the Retin-A 0.05 as recommended by my dermatologist. I have noticed a major improvement in the fading of my age spots on my face. The Obagi system is very expensive, but it was the only thing that worked for me.

    Absolutely amazing results! I'm also 53 and started my Retin-A journey (again) about 6 months ago. I'm up to 3 nights per week and I'm really starting to see my skin change. I don't ever plan to stop again, what was I thinking!? Oh how I wish I could talk to my 25 year old self, LOL But at least we have it now, and that's the best we can do. So here's to all of us, trying, and succeeding, to look way better than our mothers did at 53 and beyond! Keep on keeping on ladies! xoxo C

    Wow Angie!!! The results, especially on your eyes, is amazing!!! You look so beautiful. I always use sunscreen but haven't tried Retin A yet- just Retinol. Great before after photos!!! Have a lovely day my friend! ❤️

    Thanks Angie for always reminding me about sunscreen. I use it faithfully and am surprised at how few UA-cam beauty women don't use it, don't mention it and certainly never show/demo sunscreen. I guess when you are young you think "oh I'm fine, I don't have sun damage", without realizing it's going to show up later. In my 20s/30s not much was known about the severe damage of sun so I'm paying the price now!!

    You look amazing. I am 72 and I started using Retin A in 1986. I started with 0.05 and worked my way up to the 0.1, which I applied religiously every night for almost 30 years. I never waited 20 minutes after washing my face to apply it. I just rubbed it on my face, including under my upper brow and below my bottom lashes, neck, and chest The only area I avoided was from my eyelid crease to my upper lashes. I learned that many Retin A users avoid the eye area, including the crows feet, but that didn't make sense to me, because that's where my wrinkles started. After using it for so many years, my face and neck got so rosy that I looked sunburned, so I started using it every other night several years ago. When I started using it every other night, I started peeling a lot, whereas when I used it every night, my face would just peel at night while I slept. The peeling wasn't evident until I started washing my face with a damp cloth. I would see the dead skin sloughing off as I rubbed my face and neck. I did this several times before I would apply my moisturizer, Lac Hydrin (which is a prescription lotion). I would then apply sunscreen and eye makeup. My face was so smooth, I didn't need foundation. Now I'm back to using it every night and the dead skin isn't much of a problem. It's mostly a nightly thing.
    I'm wondering if you still use Vitamin C serum every morning? I'm thinking about using it. Just want to know what you think about it.

    You've had some wonderful results. It's very encouraging to see your photos. I'm in the 3rd month using .1% RetinA. I've gotten through the irritation, especially after learning how to buffer the RetinA with moisturizer, and using it only every 3rd day. If I EVER stop peeling I'll be completely happy to keep going with it. I still molt like a lizard. Many days I can't wear foundation. Still, I'm determined to make this work. At least I can see I'm getting excellent exfoliation. :D Thanks for your help. I learned more about how RetinA works and it's application from you than I ever did from my dermatologist.

      +Laura T Me too! Same, same and same-on every point you mentioned:) A little cheerleading is very helpful in staying the course and this channel, Angie AND her viewers, are so good for that! Quick question; Do you use a moisturizer before and after tretinoin or just after? I have heard of both but worry about absorption with using it before....

    • @laurat4977
      @laurat4977 8 років тому

      +RV thereyet? These channels are great and IMO Angie's is one of the best for accurate information. She's a wonderful resource. I use a moisturizer both before and after on the area between my nose and upper lip, and my chin, where I have the most noticeable peeling. I only use moisturizer after on my forehead, nose, and cheeks. I usually wait about 10 - 20 minutes between applications. It really has helped. I'm only using it every 3rd night. I'll try to use it every 2nd night starting in March. My plan is to finish my tube of .1% and if I'm still peeling too much, decrease the strength of my next tube to .05%. How do you use your moisturizer with it?

    • @RV-there-Yet
      @RV-there-Yet 8 років тому

      G'morning Laura~I have been washing my face at night, applying eye cream only and then waiting 20 to 30 minutes before I use the Tretinoin. My reasoning for this was to let my skin calm a bit after cleansing in hopes of less irritation from the Tretinoin.( I was also thinking perhaps the moisturizer might block the initial absorption of the vitamin A?, but I am now reconsidering) Usually within 5 to 10 minutes after that I will moisturize my entire face. The majority of the peeling for me is around my nose and on my chin-not at all around my top lip. Of course, this is where I want to see it-and the most improvement- as I have those fine to medium lines around my mouth that make me crazy! Do you also use any vitamin C or other peptides and, if so, before or after the Tretinoin?

    • @RV-there-Yet
      @RV-there-Yet 8 років тому

      I also alternate between the .05% and the .1%, equally....for a total of 4 nights a week...

    • @laurat4977
      @laurat4977 8 років тому

      Sounds like we're using a very similar protocol. I do use a Vit C&E serum but only in the morning. I'm not using any other peptides at this time. I forgot to mention that I do use an eye cream at night, too. I think using the moisturizer with the RetinA does indeed buffer it and does cut the potency, but that's what I'm looking for right now. I probably shouldn't have started out with the strongest formula, but I did so now I'm trying to counteract some of the harsher side effects. So far, so good. I just want this awful peeling to subside! I'm sure it'll probably take another month or two and if it doesn't I might stop applying it directly to my chin and under my nose until I can switch to the milder formula. Geez. It's complicated sometimes. :) I'd love to hear from you again when you notice any change or improvement. Sounds like we're on the same track. Thanks!!!

    Thanks, Angie! Your results speak for themselves. I've had a tretinoin tube sitting in my drawer and actually a video you posted a few weeks back inspired me to pick it back up. (I think it was your Botox/injectables video). You showed your eyes before and after in that video, and I was shocked. I have the same hooded eyes that you had in your before shot. Okay, so fast forward... I tried retin-a for past few weeks, once a day (at night) ...but I stopped using it the past few days because my skin was red and looking quite raw. How slowly did you use the .05 in the beginning? Every other day? Few times a week? Thanks! Erin xo

    Thank you for the update on Retin A; I have followed you throughout your journey, Angie. I really appreciate your updates and all of your suggestions; your experience with Retin A has been most helpful.
    Regrettably, I didn't start serious skincare until very late in life, I will be 63 this year. After using over the counter retinols/retinoids for a year, I slowly introduced 0.05% Retin A into my skincare regime. I have been using it for 5 months now, and have worked up to five nights a week with little to no peeling/redness/irritation. I have had a fair bit of irritation on my neck, so I'm back to the over the counter products for that area. I believe that using the over the counter products prior to starting Retin A, may have contributed to making my transition to Retin A easier, and why I am already noticing some improvements to my skin (texture and elasticity). All in all, I am very happy with the results so far, and look forward to seeing more improvement in the future. Better late than never, right? 
    I enjoy watching all of your videos. Your reviews and experiences have helped me make decisions with skincare products and makeup. Again, thank you for all that you do. Take care,
    Lorna

    I feel like taking pictures with normal lighting is where you can tell real results. studio lights aren't reliable as they brighten the face and hides certain features. just like when you would walk In a makeup store and they sit you down in front of a mirror with bright lights, put foundation on you and looks amazing but once you walk away from the lightning,it looks all cakey and you can see where it creases or if sits on dry patches. same logic applies when you take pictures with studio lights vs actual lightning. just an advice.

      Studio lights make sure that the lighting is constant throughout the day and from day to day. The use of studio lights in and of itself does not mask wrinkles. It is how they are set up. The direction of the lighting in relation to the face and if there is fill light (an additional light on the opposite side of the main light) can either conceal or accentuate wrinkles. As a photographer, I know. I have to think about that sort of thing. She is doing well to use studio lights provided they are placed at the same place everytime, the same power of light, and the same settings on her camera. It is only when there is flat lighting (almost shadowless which is very flattering) that you don't see the wrinkles as much. Sort of like a halo of light all around the face. ring lights do that. Look at the catch lights in the eyes and if you see ring, they are using a ring light. Cool effect, lot less wrinkles.

    Hi Angie. Love your vids. You look GORGEOUS again!. Me and hubby went on a cruise to Ensenada and I picked up some Mexican 0.5 retinA and have been using it for about a month. It is so cheap there! I only paid $10 a tube! I think it is starting to help. Did the same thing as you when I was in my teens and early twenties. I fried my skin. You are right: 50's are a wake up call. My body screams, "Plllllllleaase love me and take care of me! I'm worn out!" My thyroid blew out and boy....fatness, wrinkles and terrible things happened. Slowly recovering with strength training, Armour and progesterone cream. Sighhhhh. I believe in not giving up. I keep trying. So you are a big encouragement! Thank, Angie!

    I just love your before and after Retin-A videos. They’re so informative. They also get me so excited about my new Tretinoin regimen, I started just over two months ago. I can’t wait to see my progress! I hope I have as much success as you have had. I started right out at 1% Tretinoin, and didn’t have any problems whatsoever. I put it on my face, neck, hands, and chest. No problems, no purging, no bad skin reactions. Just had some light redness on my neck the first couple weeks, but that has slowly faded.

You look so much younger than you did 3 years ago. Keep it up!

    I'm 21 years old and have under eye wrinkles. My question is I want to use retin-A to help undo the damage I have done and prevent more wrinkles form appearing but will using anti aging products make my skin thinner and more prone to wrinkles in the future?

    • @AngieHotandFlashy
      @AngieHotandFlashy  8 років тому +5

      Using anti-aging products like Retin-A thin the layer of dead skin cells called the stratum corneum which helps the skin look younger, at the same time it thickens the deeper layers of the skin and aids in collagen production which makes it less prone to wrinkles in the future. Whether or not you decide to use a retinoid, the best thing you can do for your skin is protect it from the sun with sunscreen every day.

    Angie, I know this video was done in Jan. 2016 and I'm a huge fan of your channel!! As a RN, I absolutely love when you speak about the physiology and chemistry of your skincare routine! No one can say you don't do your homework, that's for sure and you've aged beautifully, even before you started using Retin-A. As a nurse I see A LOT of people's skin, from youth to elders, and I will tell you some surprise you regarding age, based upon skin and some completely through for a loop. Well, it's 2017 of March and I will be 51 next month!! I've always had a skincare routine since I was 18. I'm half Sicilian and half Scottish, I have Auburn hair, my skin has a light olive tone, and I freckle easily. My mother, who is Sicilian and 76, looks like she's in her 50's and has the most beautiful, flawless, less wrinkles than I do skin!!! My father was always in the sun, because he worked outside, but he still had great skin when he passed at the young age of 65; he even moisturized his skin!! When I was a young teenager, my father would become so upset with me if he'd catch me laying out in the backyard tanning. He would say, "you're going to destroy your skin"! He even climbed on the rooftop of our home one day and dumped a 5 gallon bucket of ice water on me!! That's how serious he was, but also found it to be humorous as well!! Nevertheless, for as long as I can remember I've always had oily skin and didn't develop acne, until I turned 20, thanks to hormones and lack of quality makeup and skincare back then! I had continued to tan, but always always always covered my face with a towel, hat, and occasionally use of sunscreen. I have been blessed with aging gracefully, thanks to genetics and a persistent father!! However, when I hit my 40 year mark, I noticed a difference in my skin, in regards to all the things you noticed with your skin mentioned in this video. I continued with my daily skincare routine, which is most of your suggestions to slow the hands of time. Then, I hit 50 and it's becoming a struggle. Eyelids...what eyelids, fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes and smile. I started research of my own which is when I came across you...thank God!!! I, started adding a retinoid to my skincare routine which has been a year now. About 2 months ago I finally started using prescription Retin-A. I had slight tingling and some sensitivity when I use it, but what has really changed is my face is breaking out much more than usual!?! I was using the Retin-A every night, by its self and oil-free mattifying moisturizers in the AM. I'm using most of the products you use for your skincare routine for AM/PM with the exception of the oils for the simple fact, I have oily skin! For the past 10+ I've always used powder mineral makeup, and recently started using an Invisiblur blur shield, product that also treats and protects, meaning it contains a spf of 30 +++ which has the chemical sunscreen protectors, not one with zinc oxide or titanium oxide. At first, I used the Retin-A every night, because its suppose to help acne prone skin, and I skipped your how to use Retin-A video for the first time. I continued with the sunscreen product everyday, as mentioned above. After watching your how to use Retin-A I went back down to once a week for now, and yes it is the lowest strength. So, what's happening? What am I doing wrong? Do you think I'm having a reaction to the chemical sunscreen? I've read that zinc oxide is good for oily acne-prone skin, but it's hard to find a sunscreen to use on my face, with powder mineral makeup without becoming an oily mess 2 hours later!! Could it be the Retin-A or a reaction to the sunscreen? My skin is improving regarding the things you mentioned Retin-A would combat, but the acne is out of control!! Note, one of the moisturizers that I use for the AM is oil-free, which helps a little. Therefore, if you or anyone out there is having the same problem or may know what is possibly going on, doing wrong, and has any suggestions that would be super helpful! I would be most appreciative to your responses and as always Angie, you look absolutely stunning and beautiful!! Another side note, there are some things I left out, because of the extent of my comment/questions. I wish I could email you in full so you would have the full AM/PM routine and products, but this is long enough and I apologize for such a lengthy discussion! In closing, much love to you Angie from a dedicated sub!!💕 And a huge thank you to whom ever responds!!💕

    I'm 34 and started using Roc Retinol night treatment for acne control- it worked like a charm. I recently ordered the Paula's Choice Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment so we'll see how it goes. I was wondering what is the biggest difference between a Retinol like Paula's Choice and Retin A?

    • @NurseJackie2582
      @NurseJackie2582 8 років тому

      From what I've learned, they are like cousins. They are both forms of vitamin A. Retinol only works on the surface of the skin whereas retin-a gets into the deeper layers of skin and actually CHANGES your skin. In other words, anything medical grade is much stronger.

    • @AngieHotandFlashy
      @AngieHotandFlashy  8 років тому +6

      +JVSak OTC retinol and prescription Retin-A are both forms of Vitamin A but the prescription is much stronger and more effective than the OTC. The main difference is that the skin can only use retinoic acid which is what Retin-A is, so it's immediately available for use by the skin. OTC retinol has to be converted into retinoic acid within the skin via a 2-step process during which some of the efficacy is lost.

    First, let me apologize in advance for my long post :)
    Wow, I just continue to be amazed at what a difference the Retin-A has made for you. It's really noticeable when you watch your videos circa 2013 (and you looked great back then!). It definitely helps me keep my resolve to stick to the Retin-A despite the peeling, irritation, etc.
    Ok, so I know you are big into reading ingredients (as am I - my mother was a chemist) and I wanted to mention/ask you a few things...
    1) The hardest thing for me, I'll be honest, is sunscreen. I've tried them all and am now using the EltaMD one you recommended. It's pretty good, but still tackier than I'd like. (How do you get your skin to look so matte/dry after putting on the sunscreen? Mine still feels sticky even with a little foundation and powder.) I recently read about the Japanese sunscreens and wondered if you had an opinion on them? Here is a link to the very popular one I bought. It has some ingredients the EWG would find questionable, but these sunscreens are very popular in Japan. Here's a link to a review and the ingredient list.
    Review: skinandtonics.com/review-biore-uv-aqua-rich-watery-essence-face-sunscreen-spf-50-pa/
    Ingredient list: www.cosdna.com/eng/cosmetic_ccec64551.html
    2) I bought the Thayer's non-alcohol toner after watching your video (and I know it does have many beneficial uses), but I've read conflicting things since about using it on your face. Apparently witch hazel has a very high tannin content and can be irritating when used repeatedly on skin because it constricts blood flow. I wasn't sure if you were aware of this and wanted to bring it to your attention since you are so careful about what you put on your skin. (And yes, the versions with alcohol in them are even worse, but the tannin is the issue I wanted to mention.)
    Lastly, I just wanted to mention a great website that I thought you'd like since you do take an interest in the chemical formulations of cosmetics. It's called TheBeautyBrains (thebeautybrains.com/) and it's run by two cosmetic scientists who "help you to cut through the confusing, misleading and sometimes false information that the beauty companies bombard you with." They have a great podcast, too. Almost as addicting as UA-cam, lol. Anyway, I thought I'd mention it in case you didn't know about it.
    Cheers! Jenny

    I have been using Retinol products for about 6 years. I have noticed a huge improvement in my skin and I am wondering if it's worth it at this point to switch to Retin A. I heard they are the same thing, just different strengths.

    • @AngieHotandFlashy
      @AngieHotandFlashy  8 років тому +25

      +Lauren Harger Hi Lauren~ Prescription Retin-A and otc retinol are not the same thing, but what they have in common is they're both forms of Vitamin A. Obviously the Rx is much stronger, but it's not just strength, the real difference is in how your skin uses them. Retin-A stands for Retinoic Acid which the skin absorbs easily and uses immediately to stimulate collagen growth. Retinol is 2 steps away from being retinoic acid and must first be converted by the skin into retinaldehyde and then into retinoic acid by the skin before it can be used.

    • @laurendesignchick
      @laurendesignchick 8 років тому +1

      +HotandFlashy wow. That was so informative. Thank you! Now I am wondering if I can skip the lightest strength and try the 0.1% right off the bat since my skin seems to tolerate vitamin A. BTW I have been using my Jenu infuser for a month since Christmas and I am loving it. Based on your review I decided to try it. I finally feel like I am getting the results I should have been seeing al along from my skin care products!

      +Lauren Harger Hi Lauren. I used retinol serums with vit c for over two years. My skin is pretty strong and tolerates all the skin care I put on it. Three weeks ago I started using 0.05 of retin-a only once a week and my skin is reacting to it. Dry flakey skin and break outs like crazy. Even though your skin loves retinol I recommend easing into retin-a slowly. I'm so glad I started with 0.05. Going to bump up to twice weekly this week.

      +Lauren Harger I wouldn't advise it. This is where most women get into trouble when they first start Retin A or copper peptides. They look worse until they dial it back. If you want overnight improvement, that is what lasers are for. Even then, you usually need several laser treatments.

    I turned 45 this year and have been freaking out that I'm 5 years from 50. I only knew my *grandmother* till she was 53, so it's surreal to be so close to it. I don't have fine lines or wrinkles (always indoorsy), but I'm starting to get JOWLS, and there's a shadow from the corner of my nose to the corner of my mouth, threatening to become crease. I've started Retinol 1% (The Ordinary), but it's making me dry and scaly in places, no matter how heavy my moisturiser. *You've given me hope* that it WILL work, so I'll dilute it with equal drops plain oil until I get used to it. SO worth it if it can stop the hound dog indentation ... and maybe LIFT the jawline?
    I must also *THANK YOU* for your video on sleeping on your back! My previous facial problems have faded dramatically (vertical crease along sides of nose is gone, and creases under outer sides of eyes have nearly gone -- they would have become full on bags). I now realise what damaging impact side-sleeping was doing all these years. If it weren't for YOU, bringing that up I wouldn't have thought to change it!

    Wow. This has made a tremendous difference in your skin! After watching your videos about your Retin-A use, I did some research on Retinol vs. Retin-A. As a result, I've stuck with Skinceuticals 1% Retinol. Retin-A caused insane irritation and peeling when I tried it several years ago, and I had to discontinue using it. Since I didn't have your videos for guidance (or anyone's videos, for that matter), I didn't ease into it like you recommend. I do get some peeling from the Retinol, and am still not up to using it every night yet. This is my second tube. I have been told that I look 10 to 15 years younger.I have been using Retina A starting with the lowest strength for several years.I blend my Retina A 0.01 cream with Obagi nu derm blend pm.This blend is excellent for hyper pigmentation, wrinkles ,and sagging.Since they are both in cream form I don't have that much irritation or peeling.I was instructed by my Dr. to applied it 1 hour after washing my make up off with Cold cream and Cetaphil soap.He said never use soap or any cleanser with alcohol,and always use sun block.I use Netrogena SPF 110.I also applied the lowest strength on my upper eyelid with no problem.Since I am part chinese my eyelid tan to drop a lots,but now my eye are wide open,and some time I look surprised.

    I love following natural beauties, The results look amazing. I’m 47 And just started using RetinA . I wish I would have started it sooner . My skin is very sensitive and sometime I get a lot peeling but not giving up.

    Good review. I horde my Retin-A by making sure I get all the allowed prescriptions filled even if I haven't finished a tube. I never want to run out! I, too, have been using it for around three years and am impressed with the results. I recently added a home microdermabrasion device treatment once a week to erase those age spots that are stubborn. Don't forget the backs of your hands!
