    I worked on a towboat pushing barges up and down the Mississippi. At night we were required to wear headlamps to see what we were doing, and the boat itself was equipped with two large spotlights the captain could control from the wheelhouse. Half of the time we kept them off, most nights you could work solely off the moonlight. They were there for those moonless nights, and for when we were to far off in the swamp that the trees blocked out any light. Those of us on the deck crew hated the spotlights for the sole fact that some captains would put them on you "in regards to safety", blinding you and drawing out every mosquito in the state to your location

  • @tinymetaltrees
    @tinymetaltrees 17 днів тому

    Part of making my Tiny Metal Trees is concealing the glue by sprinkling miniature rocks (gravel) on it. I recently started going to the beach to harvest gravel myself (+ maybe shells and sea-glass) which I clean and partially sort by color to use in this way on different colored rocks. One component of the dark colored gravel assortment is bits of slag from steamships' burners which was just dumped overboard as waste. It is mostly black and vitreous with varied discolorations and textures depending on whatever gunk had not been completely burned. It looks kind of like a lava-rock crossed with a meteorite, but is really neither. I just opened the can of this color blend of gravel to use it, right at the very moment that our friend Mike Brady said "steamship"!
    To be fair, some of the material probably managed to make it's way from locomotives too, but there was a good chunk of time where the harbor would have been relatively full of steamships and nobody exactly considered this convenient disposal pollution, except probably the fish.
    Now, some tiny bits of this stuff get sold to tourists and are once more making their way around the world. We're a cruise-ship port so some of the bits are even going by sea again!

I was thinking of the MV Communicator which was anchored (?) somewhere of the South of England, or maybe, in the North Sea (?) and held a pirate radio station during the 1980''s. Charlie Wolf was one of my favourite DJ's on that ship, and we used to write to each other about music (and cookery, what meals they cooked and ate at sea etc) !! The headlight section is old. I saw it a few years ago. I've sailed in a lot of darkness, sailed my boat back to its slot on moonless nights. I also know all about night vision (takes the human eye about 7 minutes to fully readapt to darkness.) Headlights would be good. When we motored back into the harbor on the 4th of July in darkness, I stood on deck with a powerful LED flashlight.
    The entire issue of headlights is exactly the same as for cars: Don't travel faster than your headlights. This means that you should only travel as fast as you can safely stop when something appears in your headlights. Same for ships. The issue is of course ships can take a couple of miles to stop or radically change course. Also for crew spotters. If there are more than three people on board, one of them can be night vision, another can be the spotlight user. Headlights or a spotlight on a ship doesn't have to be on all the time. The standard for binoculars for boating are 7 x50. The magnification is high enough to see more than your eyes, and the 50 - size of the front element gathers enough light to be useful at night. I also have 14 x 40 stabilized binocs. Terrific during the day, far superior than the 7 x 50s, but at night of little value. For night sky viewing I have 10 x 150s, not expensive but large these at night can see more than your eyes. the 10x and the weight makes them difficult to use on a moving deck. 7 x 150 would be really great.
    One of the higher quality DSLRs like my Nikon D850 is incredibly sensitive. It sees more than the nigh sky binocs.
    Iron oxide is just a great pigment. Never fades. I painted the bungalow I was sharing with the owner. He was an architecture student, so every afternoon for two weeks he and his school friends would get together and discuss not only what color, but what shade of that color to paint the house.... The second week was all splitting hairs. I told them that any mixed color they chose would be fugitive and would inevitably fade. It did within two weeks and continued to look worse and worse. Mixed colors use aniline dyes -- these are inherently fugitive -- meaning they fade from sun, UV, oxidation, pollutants... iron oxide being the color of a very stable chemical compound, never fades. It would take a chemical reaction.
    The bungalow next door was owned by someone else. She asked me to paint hers. What color? "Oh just barn red." I painted it the week I got married in 1985. When I later revisited her house 18 years later that paint was still great, but the white window trim had needed to be repainted. The other bungalow? It had been repainted a couple of times.
    I have a sailboat and the issue with repainting the bottom is to use a strong biocide or not or ablative - where layers slough off. I also pay $80/month to have the marine growth scraped off. It takes a diver about an hour to do this. Biocides and copper based bottom paint are banned in some places because they kill marine life including coral.

    Traditional red hulls are really deeply ingrained into ship culture. This year when the battleship New Jersey went into drydock they found that when her hull was last painted in 1991 it was painted all black. During the drydock this spring they went back to the red hull with black boot topping. It's not anti-foul paint but it is the right colors again.

    A thing that i was wondering, what has changed in funnels from 1850 to today? I'm not talking about the number of funnels but to their structure. Previously, since ships began to be moved by steam, the funnel was just a large pipe to expel smoke, but now the funnel is made up of many small pipes placed together, why this? What has changed? Isn't it enough to have just one pipe for everything?

      Or the MV Astoria. Yes, the ship that sank the Andrea Doria in the 1950s ran all the way until 2020😲 The beer bug finally took her out, and almost took out the Queen Mary as well.

    20:17 there is another tech now in use to see vessels around you: AIS (Automated Identification System). It transmits your (WAAS/SBAS-augmented) GPS location, vessel name, and course digitally over the VHF. This is far more affordable for sailboat owners than a radar setup. They can sound an alarm if a ship is headed in your direction. Useful to also just see who's out there. If doing some blue water sailing in the open ocean and a ship is going in the opposite direction, they can provide useful condition information about the waters ahead.

    On a cruise around South America in 2023 I noted another use for the bulbous bow: In dock near Lima, Peru, a large cargo carrier was moored near our boat, and on its bulbous bow there a seal, peacefully sleeping the day away.

    Man what I wouldn't give to be able to take a cruise on a proper Ocean Liner...they just had CLASS. Cruise ships to me look too...busy. I know the point of that is because they don't have a set schedule to adhere to like liners did since ships like RMS Titanic or Olympic were also mail carriers (hence the abbreviation RMS-royal mail ship) but still...I wish they'd take a page out of Titanic's book and be a bit more...streamlined.

U makes great videos and u learn people alot without being "wiseguy". Keep up your good work and i finds your videos very interesting.

    I’ve been retired for nearly 6 years. After going to sea for over 40 years, I still find I am able to do most of my activities in the darkness. I live in a city, so nothing absolutely completely dark.

    Costume historian here, what's your source for the use of iron oxide in British military uniforms? My understanding is that they were mostly done in vegetable dyes, like madder, or using cochineal in a pinch. It's not my area of expertise, so I ask out of curiosity rather than slapping it down.

    • @nian60
      @nian60 17 днів тому

      We told Mike this before but I guess he never saw those comments. Yes the redcoats were madder, cochineal or similar. Mike has no knowledge of fabric dyes. Luckily he's cute. 😊

    • @Kate-the-Curst
      @Kate-the-Curst 17 днів тому

      @@nian60 Maybe there was a mention of iron as a mordant somewhere? I think that's usually for black though.
