Melissa will lose her mind if her daughter doesn’t go to university. That poor kid has so much pressure on doing that, she may do the exact opposite just because of that. University isn’t for everyone and I see more people going to college for a trade who are more successful than most university graduates.

So many parents try to live vicariously through their children or want to give them everything they didn't have but you need to know your child and some need pushing to do things and others just find what they're interested in and good at on their own. No need to worry so much though and especially at 7!

I heard that in some Indigenous communities the elders would observe the children to figure out who's best suited to certain jobs, so they could build on their natural talents at a young age. In our modern industrialized culture it's rare to hear about people becoming their potential, but in Indigenous cultures (prior to colonization) it was average for youth to achieve self actualization.

I felt the comment about culture is missing some context and is misleading. I do agree that some parents have stereotypes and (un)conscious biases about race which may influence the types of activities their children participate in. That said, it’s not just Black parents but many other races and ethnicities that engage in this type of thinking. Also, many Black parents recognize that when their Black child is the only one involved in activities dominated by another race or ethnic group, exposure to racism, micro aggressions, and stereotypes by leaders, parents, and children is high. For some parents when faced with these circumstances it is understandable that one may choose to avoid exclusive environments, particularly with their young children to protect their mental health and well being.

Not every kid is going be Macaulay Culkin. I mean let a kid be a kid. Plus I hate it when you go to a dinner party and you know your kid has no talent and you turn on music and make them try to sing and it's terrible.
