    This was by far the best vid. on how to test and replace a thermostat! o bullshit, no technical dialog, just easy to understand instructions! Made my day!!Why does everyone want to drone on and on with useless rhetoric that 9/10sof us do not understand.

    Does this mean we do not need to turn off the power first, to change the thermostat which has the same 4 wires as the one you're working on? thanks

    At 5:26, it says we should jumper Yellow and White for a heat pump, which is wrong (for any thermostat). I'm no HVAC expert, but I have a single-stage heat pump with AUX/E heat. My wires are R,G,Y,W,O,B (red,green,yellow,white,orange,black), where R=power, G=fan, Y=compressor, W=aux heat, O=reverse(cool), B=common/neutral. Red is always 27 Vac, Black is always 0 Vac. If I jumpered Yellow and White, AUX/E heat would ALWAYS turn ON whenever the compressor runs, which is wrong. It would be wastefully expensive during heating and simply ridiculous during cooling (because AUX/E heat would ALWAYS run during cooling). Also, it would energize the compressor during "emergency heat" mode, which is wrong. My thermostat energizes the Yellow and White wires independently, as needed. It's the thermostat's job to figure out how to energize the wires. IMHO, physical jumpers should rarely (if ever) be needed because they override thermostat's outputs.
    My wires are energized (to 27 Vac) as follows:
    R,G : Fan Only mode,
    R,G,Y : Heating mode,
    R,G,Y,O : Cooling mode,
    R,G,Y,W : Heating + Aux Heat mode.
    R,G,W : Emergency Heat mode.

    I could tell my programmable thermostat (Honeywell Beutler 800) had gone bad because the display shows nothing but it is able to manually turn on the heater when switched to heat mode ON.
    I like the 1st tip about combining the red, green, and yellow wires to turn it on manually.

    Question - If I take the green. red and white wire jumped together that would give me heat?the yellow,red and green would be ac

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  8 років тому

      If it's gas heat all you have to do is touch red and white. Because then fire or temperature would bring on the fan.
      For AC you need red yellow and green

      the heat and ac both came on.i reconnected the thermostat and everything is working normal.

    Should you wait until the thermostat acclimates to the temperature in the house before turning on the AC. For example my thermostat was in the car at 95° My house is 75° should i wait for the thermostat to read the actual temperature of the home before turning on?

      No, if the stat is hot it will run, if your stat is bad you need some air. Plug it in and turn it on, so you have air it will adjust

    Hi I have a problem with my AC when I put the thermostat on auto is not working also when I put on off is working and when I put the temperature up the compressor start working but the blower never star I hope you know understand my question thank you

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  7 років тому

      Oscar Gonzalez it's wired wrong probably doesn't have a green wire hooked up and the yellow wire maybe touching red.
      My advice is to take them all off and start over make sure R terminal behind your thermostat goes the red terminal on the board in the indoor unit. And G to G W to W Y to Y I typically use the red wire to connect the R to R but the color wire doesn't matter as much as that a wire connects R to R.
      I hope that makes sense just make sure those four wires are going to the furnace or air handler and connected to the same terminal. If that doesn't work can you make sure the wires are right then you have a bad thermostat.

    My unit is coming on outside but no air comes out. I also noticed that the "cool on" message continues to flash and not go solid. Do you think it's a bad thermostat?

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  7 років тому

      Marie Charles it could be the thermostat yes, what I heard is your AC on side gets the signed to turn on. But the indoor unit with the blower either does not meaning bad stat, bad stat wire more likely bad stat. Or B it is getting the 24 V signal and it's a bad circuit board, motor or capacitor.
      My vote is the thermostat.

    I have a AC unit that runs none stop. I just bought this home. the only way to turn the AC off is to turn off the breaker. I have a separate thermostat for my heat. weird I know. Anyways I took the thermostat off the wall and I only have 2 wires. a red and a white. please help me understand this

    • @hlwizzard
      @hlwizzard 7 років тому

      Your RED wire is Power & White is Common. Just connect Red wire to Red wire/screw & White wire to White wire/screw on new thermostat. If this doesn't work then new thermostat wire might be needed. To test that it's actually your thermostat that's bad, after you take your old thermostat off, touch the Red wire to White wire. If you can control (turn off/on) your ac by touching those two wires, then it's most likely a thermostat issue.

    I'm having a problem with my a/c unit, it works just fine during the night but as soon as it gets hot outside the thermostat starts to turn off and on by it self and the a/c will go off eventually the thermostat will blank out and the only thing i can turn on is the fan or blower then after a miserable 90° day inside around 9 pm the thermostat will start to work again. I replaced it with a new one and it work for two days and is back to the same thing... any ideas??

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  8 років тому

      Yes, I'd say with heat and expansion probably there's a loose wire or connection somewhere, maybe the common wire. Leading to the thermostat, as if it's losing power, it would have to be common or the stat itself.
      There's your options
      1. Replace thermostat
      2. Trace and redo all wiring connections to ensure they're tight. Just worry about the small low volt wires and tighten all the wire nuts.

    • @cjo201012
      @cjo201012 8 років тому

      +Las Vegas Air Conditioning, Inc. Thank you i already replaced the stat so I'll get to work on those wires. Thanks again!

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  7 років тому

      Joel Ortega possibly a lose connection in the low volt or a weak or almost broken thermostat wire. Heat expands and cold contracts I've had that happen to me with the cable tv and it was only a loose connection that expanded just enough during the day to go off. As there are things in an AC that can overhear during the day none of those things would make the stat go blank.

    My question concerns a different kind of hacking. Can someone maliciously hack and control the heating system from outside your home once they got a hold of the system from being inside your home? Last night was a cold one( non stop blowing cold no matter how high it was set) and then at 6am, miraculously, it began to work, properly. I am amusing they are night owls. Mind you this has been going on for some time now.

    Replaced my thermostat according to color coded, I'm getting heat when I switch on cool.
    I did switch breaker off. Compressor comes on. cold air coming out of condenser fan, hot air out of vent..

    • @erichchan3

      Sj V sounds like u need to double check ur wiring. Do not assume the normal colors (ex: Yellow wire for cooling and White wire fot heat) are always hooked up to the Y and W ports at the furnace board. I would look at your furnace board and take pictures to see what color wires are hooked up to the R, Y, G, W and C ports on the board.

    Y didn't u use a common. I always use black or brown as common. Blue is always y2. Orange w2. And white is always w1. Good job. Just curious not wiring common. Not a lot of people change batteries.

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  9 років тому +1

      I use blue for common if no blue then black or whatever
      Orange is rev valve so O or B
      And y1 or w2 I use whatever is left
      But I don't always include a common because I've had too many calls where people blow there transformer from fiddling with their own stat so eh not sure if I prefer them having a common or not I'm ok either way as batteries usually last 2-3 years.

    Why no common wire this make's my thermostat burn the fan wire and has ruined the fan inside the system is electric and the thermostat has many traces burnt on the thermostat and other points on it. Yet the managers and in-house HVAC miss everything in front of them and claim nothing is wrong as I sit here and its 80 something right now when it should be 70

    • @StephenShares
      @StephenShares  7 років тому +2

      Jennifer Case sounds like you have a problem but it has nothing to do with having or not having the common wire all the common wire does is give the thermostat power that's it has nothing to do with the Fan. Because the thermostat can run off either batteries or 24 V. But if you have burning then something must be a miss wired somewhere you should call a professional don't rely on Maintenance
