A very rare drummer in Europe I saw him with Holdsworth in 97 then a few years ago with Jeff Lorber I had a little conversation with him in 97 after the show It was in July I think The club wasn't full
I saw him on this tour in Chicago, his hometown and he did this solo in the FIRST song and got about a 3 minute standing ovation. I got to talk to him before the show and he was super cool. What an amazing talent that is still killing it today. He was about 21 when this was recorded.
Back in the 90's when Gary joined Chick Korea I had an opportunity to take a master class when he came into town. I didn't know much about him at the time. when I saw the concert that night Chick let him loose on stage and i will never forget the amazement watching him play. still one of the most impressive players i have seen!
I believe Weckl recommended him to Chick since Gary and Dave knew each other well in those days and did a lot of hanging together. Novak did the CCEBII album and Time Warp with the Chick Corea Quartet that also featured Patitucci and Bob Berg on Tenor. THAT album is friggin' sick as well and shows Gary in an acoustic Jazz setting and just swinging his ass off. He also recorded an album of standards with Bob Berg called Another Standard that shows just how versatile and creative he truly is. Yeah, I've been trying to capture some of that Novak vibe in my practicing lately. But those insane singles he plays is just too much velocity for mere mortals. Yeah, that deeeeeep 18" bass drum is such a different thing. It was the first thing I noticed on the CCEBII album. One thing that I find in these live vids of the EBII and Holdsworth is his ridiculous stamina, being able to absolutely slay this stuff with such intensity for so long. Of course he was still pretty young then but even still...YIKES!!! And he has had stints with Alannis Morrisette and Robben Ford that further demonstrate he can do it all! Yeah, the greatest drummer nobody knows. That's crazy.
Gary also played on Joe Locke (Vibes/Mallets)- Four Walls of Freedom w James Genus on upright bass and the late great Bob Berg on Tenor, plus guest Gerald Presencer on flugelhorn on a couple of tracks. Super excellent playing by all- smokin', sensitive, exploratory, beautiful sounding .
gary novak is THE EPITOME OF DRUMSET ARTISTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gary novak has jammed with other fine musicians such as george benson, maynard ferguson, david sanborn, lee ritenour, alanis morrisete, etc.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for analysed Gary Novak drumming cause i got confused what he's playing. I've heard some of the albums that you've mention and i'm really inspired what he did in all of the records and live shows. Really a phenomenal drummer and i wish he can be more popular cause everyone needs to see his musical ideas on the drums.
About the time of the recording of this video I was fortunate enough to witness Gary and this remarkable band at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Sat stage level right by Mr. Novak. Quite the treat. An unforgettable performance and experience.
gary novak is a fantastic virtuoso indeed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! his collaborations with allan holdsowrth and chcik corea are better than a perfect 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for the two people that gave gary novak a thumbs down PLEASE TURN THE VOLUME ON YOUR I-PHONE AND COMPUTER !!!!!!!!!!!! music is much more enjoyable when you turn the volume on!!!!!!!!!!!! so therefore turn the voulme on AND GIVE GARY NOVAK A THUMBS UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!
chick corea has fine taste in excellent drummers whether its dave weckl, gary novak, marcus gilmore, jeff ballard, roy haynes, jack dejohnette, lenny white vinny colaiuta, barry altschul, steve gadd etc,,,,etc,,,etc,,!!!!!!!!!!!! chick corea r.i.p.!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome video (I'm referring to yours, not the video within the video - which is obviously ridiculous)! Gary is, in my opinion, a national treasure. That clip is notorious. His playing therein is like a young, reckless Vinnie with some Dennis, Marvin Smith, and a smidge of Tony thrown in to add insult to injury.
Why didn´t Gary become one of "the greats"? He has the power of Bohnham, the groove of Gadd, the wonderful quirkiness of Colaiuta and the fluidity of Weckl. Did he lack a bit of true identity? I don´t know... Been revisiting some old Holdsworth and Paint The World, and it sounds even better than I remembered.
Weckl played in the first 5 albums. Novak was there for a minute and weckl returned. I don't know anything about arguments. I doubt it because almost everybody was new, along with Novak. It was probably due to the other guys trying to start their own careers as leaders. As great as Novak is, for my ears, Weckl is the most musical drummer in the world.
His work with Holdsworth and Carpenter is magic
A very rare drummer in Europe

My favorite drummer on the planet since 1993.
The sixteen men of tain line up - Allan Holdsworth, Dave Carpenter, Gary Novak... What a trio! Great drummer and great video, as always 👏

Gary Novak is a monster and interestingly very little known in contrast to his caliber. Thanks Garey for this reaction. Awesome stuff as always.
This is the greatest solo in drums history period!
I saw him with Allan Holdsworth in 1997 in a little jazz club
I was seated not far from him
It was the best drumming I had ever seen then and since !

Incredible playing🥁
Incredible performance!
You'll hear Gary on all of Jeff Lorber's music from 2010 onward.

I'd didn't just hear this because it's impossible to be this good.
AMAZING
Wow...unbelievable

"Scary" good indeed .
He must enjoy it atop Mt. Everest ...rarified air .
Insane 8:37 to 8:40
My god, those hands... my god my god my god!
For sure!!
Best drum solo ever. Atombomb.

This dude's skills are ridiculous.
Drummers dont believe me Novak is the best drummer ever! What he did no one can do!
If you turned the music off it would sound like this guy is taking the most satisfying dump of his life.
