Short version: It's certainly eye catching, and there are much worse colours to paint a Bulleid. Long version: Heritage railways largely do well in presenting the public and enthusiasts with an 'as authentic as is practical' view into vintage rail travel as an experience. However, there is a time for authenticity, and there is a time for wider public appeal. Heritage railways don't come cheap: operating costs are forever going up, as well as rising fuel costs against the ever-growing need to be environmentally concious and the growing struggle of volunteer shortages. Coupled together, ticket prices are rising to a point that the wider public could be put off visiting a heritage railway since many cheaper 'family day out' options are available. As such, there has to be room for bias towards something that appeals to the wider public beyond an authentic experience if these railways are to survive, ignoring the opinions of armchair enthusiasts; to that end, painting a Bulleid purple has been a masterstroke: It's kept people talking, it's stolen headlines, and has helped pack out services with people coming to view 'the purple steam train'; so more revenue. And if it kickstarts a renewed interest in younger generations, leading to more volunteers, then hallelujah.
