      Hi Bevan.
I presume you are referring to Tim Newton. I received a comment from Tim saying how pleased he was to see the videos of Basil Dean. He had all of his races on tape but these were accidentally destroyed when Tim moved to the USA many years ago. A fantastic performance in this race.
The 1984 NZ Trotting Annual describes it as follows:
Privately the stopwatches around the grandstands were being shaken in disbelief and the general feeling among the press benches was that the one watch that had attempted to clock the race from the start had "clicked on" too late. It showed Basil Dean had won in 3:15.
Later, not too much later though, the official timekeepers announced the new record - 3:15.3. Basil Dean had trotted his last mile in not much worse than 2:0 and had obliterated the previous record of 3:19.5, set by Sir Castleton in his New Zealand Trotting Free-for-All defeat of Scotch Notch the previous November. Ironically, Basil Dean had been responsible for that record as he had pressured Scotch Notch in the lead throughout.
      Cheers, Ian.
