Maybe the reason why the ancients peoples where so fascinated by stars and celestial objects was that there was an impact in their recent past (or mythology) and they're looking out for the next one. The only way they can redirect such a stone, is by pushing away a large mass in teh lateral direction from that stone, which should be at least two orders of a magnitude smaller than that stone. That seems impossible to me.
