  • Time for Shadow's story in this game. Luckily there's only one story after this.

It’s a miracle Sonic 2006 even got out as it did given the troubled development and being around the time of the rough transition from the sixth gen to the seventh gen and the early growing pains of the seventh gen. That was a brutal time for game development and killed some studios like Factor 5 after Lair for PS3.
I don’t think 2006 was meant to be a hard but a soft reboot that’s supposed to be a fresh starting point. The other previous games happened but they’re not important to the current story and you’ll notice no mention is made of Shadow The Hedgehog (The last console mainline before 2006) whatsoever in 2006. Think how Doctor Who’s Spearhead From Space in Season 7 was a soft reboot after Season 6’s War Games in 1969 and act as a fresh start for the 1970’s; the series’ most popular decade.

Would you mind if I show this comment in the next part of the review for silver's story?

@Glitchtophertm You could just use the comment as a starting point to tackle the above in more detail like the 2005-2007 period or to highlight points like the fact there's a bit where the Specter Of Darkness is referred to as the Book of Darkness which was the original name that highlights the troubled nature of the project like the fact Silver's whole gameplay style was from a scrapped FPS and just having the issue of a particulatly troubled Star Trek TOS productions like The Alternative Factor and half of Classic Doctor Who like the last half of Classic Season 6 or the whole Season 23/Trial of A Time Lord debacle.

@@rayvenkman2087 good idea. In fact, I start the next part by bringing up the canceled FPS. And I'm more than happy to talk about Doctor who.

@Glitchtophertm If you ever seen Lorerunner's Star Trek Ruminations or read resources like Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, stuff where you get insight on why certain things turned out the way they did from budget to rewrites and the unaccounted for difficulties like having a fan favorite writer drop dead in the middle of writing out the finish.

And because of time travel, two Omegas exist in the present day.
Regarding the time travel through Chaos Emeralds, we could chalk it up to the characters using the rifts the same way Chaos Control works. Sonic wills the rift to take him to the past and Silver wills it to take him to the future. The game never really explains how Chaos Control generates time portals or how they know to do it when Time Stones exist.
Assuming they’re anything like the Master Emerald, the seven Chaos Emeralds are transcendental and not restricted to ordinary laws of time. There are only one of each at a given point in time and if there are places where there would be two of the same emerald, one basically despawns while the relevant one is present.
If they dedicated a scene where Rouge, Knuckles or Eggman mention the Chaos Emeralds’ connection to time. Similarly, they could have also added a bit explaining or clarifying that the inconsistencies might be a byproduct of the Solaris Project plus Mephiles purposely causing these hiccups in the timeline and the project creating a Yesterday’s Enterprise situation with the cast unaware of the changes to the timeline.

Thanks for the comment. And honestly, I like this idea. Just wish the game actually explained it at least a bit.

@Glitchtophertm I think with the game being a soft reboot, the Chaos Emeralds can also do what Time Stones from CD can do and the iffy time travel a byproduct from lack of time to do another draft of the script. I think the writer had said something about figuring out 2006's plot in hindsight; would have to look for citation to confirm that but based on recollection, it sounds like the wonky logic of how time travel works in 2006 is lack of time to fine tune the script which would also explain Sonic Story's illogical plot and lack of proper relevance to the other two stories.
You could easily make it so that Mephiles needs Elise to survive her ship crash because her survival is a paradox as in Silver's future, she did not survive the crash and make it that the reason he couldn't just merge with Iblis in the future is because the two halves of Solaris can't exist in the same place after their point of creation in the past. He can exist in the future because Iblis is out of comission and can exist ib the present because Iblis is inactive.
Make it so that the inconsistencies are because of Mephiles screwing with the timeline and setting things into place to ensure that his rejoining can occur at a paradox point. Make Sonic's stuff feel like it serves a narrative purpose in the grand scheme of things.

@@rayvenkman2087 well, and it's funny to me because Izuka had stated despite the fact that the game would take place after rush, Sonic and Blaze don't recognize each other despite the fact that they easily should. The reason he gave is everyone had amnesia in 06.

@Glitchtophertm Considering Blaze wasn't supposed to be in 2006 but was thrown in to give Silver someone to talk to, that explains the lack of familiarity. Plus it'd be easier to assume 2006 occurred before Rush and Rush Blaze is a reincarnated 06 Blaze or believe Blaze only exists in Silver's mind.

@Glitchtophertm A thought just occurred to me. What if the reason the Egg Carrier inexplicably started malfunctioning in Sonic's campaign actually had a story reason attached to it that didn't make the cut because of time or budget? A scene that would have played somewhere before the "We're gonna crash!" scene or before Mephiles meets Silver and Blaze.
I reckon Mephiles would have been the culprit because when he was first released, the Egg Gunners around him malfunctions and given Mephiles' ease of time travel; it wouldn't be out of the norm for him to be able to show up on the Egg Carrier perhaps around before it's launch from Aquatic Base while Eggman was out. It would actually clear up a lot of things including why Shadow and Omega lost Mephiles after returning to the present or not immediately close the time portal because Mephiles wants Shadow to be where he needs to be for his plans to proceed including allowing his past self to be sealed and have him convince Silver of the truth which would lead Silver to giving Sonic a way to save Elise from the crash. Because he caused the ship to go down.
