  • Vedic scriptures don't specify a single goal of life, they specify four - kama, pleasure, artha, wealth, dharma, righteousness, and moksha, enlightenment - four purusharthas. Q&A with Swamiji #10.
The sages of ancient India, the rishis, had a holistic view of life, recognizing both the value and limitations of worldly life (samsara) as well as the importance of transcending worldly life to become enlightened through the discovery of the ultimate source of contentment that lies within us all, the so-called inner divinity called atma, the true self.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha...

It's just matter of time, dear. When one is ready, Guru appears. One is pulled here without his knowledge.
People call it Synchronicity, randomness etc.
Let us hope that they come here very early in their lives.

We-e-e-ll, the Puritans were scared to death they might not be among the elect that God chose to be saved. Consequently, they were deeply concerned with signs indicating they were one of the elect; one of the signs of God's election was accumulating wealth by hard work. So. they did have a this-world orientation, in addition to desire of going to heaven.

Self-knowledge is truly the most worthy goal in life.
The one who is Awareness itself, Sri Ramana Maharshi, said these words about it:
For a jiva who is suffering due to dying and taking
    birth,
the most worthy thing to do and to attain with full love,
is [to have] the experience of the great state of Jivan-mukta,
having subsided and known [its own true nature],
so that the rising [of the ego], which is the coming to life [of the jiva]
because of [its] forgetting its own reality [Self], may die.
    The supreme experience [brahmanubhava] -
    which
has the glory of not knowing any other thing -
of the great enjoyer of the bliss of true knowledge [meyjnana-maha- anandi],
who has attained the state of Silence [mouna], the form of That [tadakara]
which shines triumphant on the destruction of oneself [the ego],
cannot be conceived by anyone whosoever.

Of course, this is a poetic perception and freedom,

Thank you for the inquiring buddhi and the subtle insight into what lies beyond the mind.
The Mandukya Upanishad says: "Om! This sound is all this. Here is its explanation:
Past, present, future - all this is the sound Om (Aum).
And everything else that is beyond the three times is also the sound Om ...
The fourth [state] has no parts - the ineffable, dissolution of the manifested world, bringing happiness, nondual.
So the sound Om is the Atman. Whoever knows this, penetrates [with his] Atman into the [higher] Atman. "

So in your lecture you said to live is to grow but... to grow for what if I am complete. I can only think that there was a journey or learning thanks to Kama but now I want to dis-learn as I realise that everything I learned just keep me in this cycle of wanting, craving, suffering. To live is to grow... inwards, letting the outside noise and necessities to vanish as smoke in air. Please comment. Namaste.

I have a serious issue with the concept of Artha. If someone cannot earn a living for medical reasons or whatever and cannot accumulate 'wealth' in terms of financial means - then what implications does this have? Is the person not entitled to 'grow' in other means and work towards Moksha, liberation, enlightenment, or is the person unworthy of that because he/she cannot earn Artha. I find it a little discriminatory and frightening because you're (Vedanta) essentially saying that disabled people or people unable to work are doomed. Forgive me if sound a little harsh, but it worries me extremely.

    • @ravitejvarma
      @ravitejvarma 4 роки тому

artha isn't wealth as in financial wealth ... it is the lack of a direct translation that makes it confusing ... even knowledge, skills ,arts, land, cattle, wealth, equipages and friends is artha . And "artha" also means "meaning/understanding or goal " ...Loosely put it is about material possessions and understanding of them . And it is about finding your dharma , earning the artha of your tendency and completing your kama(desires) and of course all of them righteously so that you can begin your journey to moksha ... If one doesn't full fill any of the earlier three (dharma, artha, kama) his ascent to moksha shall remain unachievable as his atma (soul) keeps going back to the unfulfilled(kama/artha)or unclarified(dharma) .

    • @smausil
      @smausil 4 роки тому +2

artha = resource management... so if a person has any disability, they still got to eat... so others can provide if one cant help themselves... its practical, that you need stuff to sustain life (not riches)... arthshastra is how to manage resources well,, not how to accumulate personal wealth... your body is also an artha, tool to be used, resource available

I think one should focus and practice towards moksha only because kama & ardha causes addiction and one can be easily lost in these. Also one will be lost in the continuous cycle of rebirths in hell, heaven and human realms. Also, if someone has plenty of bad karma from previous existences then he will not be able to attain kama & ardha but he can still target and practice for moksha if he is wise enough and able to see the truth. Also, the pursuit of kama & arhda leads one to do develop -ve karma and hence one gets trapped in -ve states of suffering. Moksha means end of attchment (clinging to pleasures, desires etc...all attachments dropped), ultimate peace and end of suffering. Moksha is opposite of kama & ardha. Moksha is the only goal and moksha is the only true peace.

  • @ailaranta2606

Excellent and educative to those who strive to balance the first three goals of life ultimately leading the one and only goal for getting liberated from lust/pleasure, the accumulation of good or bad wealth arrest one in bondage and even dharma make one to cling on heaven and return back to birth after emptying the functionality of good karma...thus the only chief goal is mukti...
    So beautifully explained...Salutations Sir.

in islam this life is a test and if you pass this test you can live eternal life with full of happiness and joy , or if you pass the test you can live your life as you wish .
Or if you fail you can be punished,
And there is not any reborn or suffering, you have only one life on earth or you can say you have only one chance ..

Dear sir, your Guru rightly said that the ultimate goal is to leave. I also agree to this answer.but what does it mean? It means to leave this world because this world is not our true Home. This world is a rented house.we would have to leave this world one day as we don't belong to this world. Our real home is somewhere else.we have forgotten our true home .where there is no death,no suffering ,no pain,no birth ,no old age.we remain permanent or everlasting.and there we leave for ever no coming and going.

christians are a divided lot, so are other religion, so is every human... most texts were written, translated, interpreted by second hand sources, so better to ignore all that and move on with what we see and what we know

@@smausil I'm just always trying to understand why people make such broad judgments against western monotheism as a whole, when there are multiple perspectives you can explore from the Bible. Unity consciousness is certainly better than duality consciousness, but why throw the baby out with the bath water when even now as an Eastern thinker, i regularly think of bible passages when explaining different situations

    • @smausil

@@davidbinder1382 I dont have judgements, but observations, and i mentioned all religions and people, not just christianity. catholics, Protestants to dozens of different variations in types of churches and practices. Different versions of bible etc... so, there is lot of variety in christianity as I observed. I met a few from different sides and spoke at length with them..... I see similar human tendencies of holier than you and i know more approaches. you find same in islam and hinduism and each religion... I dont see religion as religion, i understand humans made them as it feels to suit their current knowledge and ego... ofcourse bible has nice passages, so does koran and other texts, but even our elders can tell great stories...
i say unity or not, dual or not, just be conscious and avoid traps of stories, and we all will be better off. (i aint communist, but i feel the need to stay rational and practical)...
there each quote (from bible or elsewhere) can be understood differently and used differently in life by different people
they can be useful, but it still take the interpreting human to make a meaning out of it for themselves
you are right, there can't be comparisons and judgements among religions... every word in different mind becomes different

I am not easily impressed by any teaching, even I have been trying to listen to so many Gurus. But, when I found your channel a couple weeks ago, it like I found explanations in each of your video of what I am asking so far. Thanks a lot Swamiji.

Hello, Swami. Thank you for your videos.
I would like to point out that you have mischaracterized Judaism and its outlook on life. Judaism does not consider the goal of life is to go to heaven. Judaism considers this life to be vital. Life is to be enjoyed. It is taught that when we die we are asked why we omitted to partake of such legitimate pleasures that were available. Judaism recognizes that it is impossible to live fully spiritual lives if our physical needs are lacking. There is the expression, "Where there is no bread, there is no Torah (Dharma)."

No religious tradition has more examples of extreme aceticism than Hinduism, yet the Swami chose to use a Christian sect, the Calvinists, as his example of aceticism gone amock. Besides this minor criticism, it was an excellent, informative video.

Namaskaram 🙏 Truth is one so should be the Enlightenment experience no? How can the initiator of Buddhism be considered enlightened while the notion of self isn't the same nor there a common finding about the reality of existence? And why the term belief is used? Isn't Advaita experimental and experiential? It is not an approach to believe in no? It is incoherent how an enlightened being gives an opposite explanation to what a whole line of enlightened and avatars declared regarding Atman or self. Please extrapolate on this issue.

I was calling myself Bramhan girl & my father asked me what have I done to be called as Bramhan other than only being born in the bloodline.
In short, I'm here, begining my journey to get wisdom from our sources. I'm also learning Sanskrit so that I can decipher all that myself but I need to start here.
I'm so grateful to be born in India, seeing the majority of humans being unaware & ignorant of the real treasures that our ancestors have left for the world.

Who said that Life has a goal? It is just a rational mind’s concept that everything should have a goal. It is not true. First one should define what life is, then you will see it does not have a goal, although one can have as many goals in his life as one wishes. As to my observation - Live does not have a Goal.

I find the list to be incomplete. Moksha is absolute knowledge but there are people dedicating their lives to relative knowledge. Like the sciences or languages or even art. You cannot say it is only artha since the main goal is not to earn money but to further the field of knowledge.
