Hello, is the DJ mixing in this tutorial the same person as the tutor in that course? Thanks
@Crossfader This was a masterpiece 🙏🏼💯 !!
One question to you sir: How did you point out the introduction of the high hats at 22:25?? I watched it over and over again watching the beat layout on the screen but couldn’t understand. Please educate us!
Great video, are there any videos where you show all the work that goes into preparing such a set, from start to finish ? The actual ground work and mindset of track selection, track order, the ultimate raw decision making process including trial and errors, testing etc.. how ever long, id definitely watch it.
A tip that really helped me, especially with techno:
Every 4 BEATS a new BAR begins. Every 4 BARS a new PHRASE begins. If you start the new track at the BEGINNING of the other track's phrase (i.e. after 4 bars) the transitions will sound much smoother. You not only have the beats of the tracks aligned but also their structure. This can lead to some really nice transitions, since drastic changes in the music tend to happen every 4 bars - so if there is a break in Track A (e.g. kicks are gone) then the drop of Track B (e.g. kicks come in) is aligned with that change.
agree👏
only for 4/4 techno obviously.
is it 16 beats these days? Was 32 beats when i learned it
@@aidanpalmer9593 depends on the track. there is polyrythmic techno as well, means a phrase would be 24 beats, or maybe 20. and it depends on the arrangement of the track too. some artists like to throw in hihats randomely or let the break start 1 bar later than the typical 16 bars.
@@132dude7 how do I know which type of techno song has what quantity of beats?

TY!!! ur my hero!
Been mixing techno on my DDJ-400 recently, this really came at a great time!
same here, kinda lacking new moves, this video opened up some new ideas for me
Is the DDJ 400 good ?
Hector Serafim from an already month experience i can tell you the enjoyment while being on decks is totally worth its price
@Christopher Price if you're asking me? no, i trust my ears
@Christopher Price thanks buddy 😊
Finally! It’s been a while since you guys have talked about techno on this channel. Thanks for the love for this incredible resurfacing genre and keep it coming! :+)
Was waiting for a techno track to come on...
lol
Honestly
seriously
Same XD
Right
Thanks alot for adding those notes, they're really helpful to follow along!
Thank you so much for sharing these ideas. It's hard to come by tutorials on how to use effects for mixing techno, so this is totally enlightening.
Banging, i've had my xz a few weeks now and I haven't used the beat effects all that much. Thanks for his video.
That UMEK & Cosmic Boys track is fire🔥🔥🔥
Matching the tracks for double drop!!! By looping. Thanks for this 👍🏼
Love it! Thank you for sharing, such a inspiration for me.Just started Djing on my iPad and already realized that it is not that much fun without a controller. Looking forward to get one soon. Thanks for giving a picture how it supposed to work.
This is best dj learning video!! Love the music and great skills 👍👍
Great mix. Bar one or two, I have all these tracks & include in my sets. Techno is the best genre for me, though I do play more acid & trance in my mixes - along with some mainstream vocal loops just to liven things up. Add in the yellow smileys, strobes & smoke, you're good to go 😁
The mix is so fire I just play it to listen to the set
The man can mix. Killer tune selection.❤❤
Love these Techno Tutorials!
Great video!! You should keep uploading stuff like this. Even better if it is techno focused.
Much Thanks !
Thanks Danny James and Crossfader for this amazing mix and this demo Big Tumb!!!
Fabulous use of The Time stretch feature I needed it
I still haven't bought my xz as they've not been in stock (uk) so I've just been watching a few videos and this has got me well excited! That double drop trick with the loop is a must for me to learn.
Buy it now. Deliveries seems to be ok Again. Waiting 3 months to get mine, now i enjoy it so much.. :)
I love in America. I only bought xdj-rr and had drove 5 hours pick something they had used in stock. I'm learning now and loving this during the pandemic. I also might have an hour opening gig as soon as it is over
21:30 - Using the Colour FX knob without Colour FX actually being turned on hahaha classic
i've accidentally done that so many times it isnt even funny
Great sounds man! Really enjoyed watching You doing the magic
Thank you I love it !!!! will do it tomorrow at my gig
Cool mix, love it) Could you make trance mix (especially progressive & uplifting) please ?
From Ukraine with love
Distance is suchhhhhhh a gooooooood track
Absolutely crushed it
thank you so much for recording this video - a true inspiration!
Im 11 my dad is futurebound from matrix and futurebound and i love this mix
What! you serious?
If so, your dad creates some absolutely amazing tracks. :)
This is the best comment ever !!!
Your pops a legend!! Hopefully you also get into music production.
Loved the mix, and hope to see that 3 deck mixing style for more advanced dj's that want to up their game.
Really helpful and I love choice of tunes
Danny James' mixing style is my favourite...
As much as it is good to keep the mix interesting, letting some tracks playout how they are produced without fx in my opinion would have better this mix
I agree i feel myself doing that most of the time, feels weird not doing anything though

This wasn't done as an overall mix for our listening pleasure. He was constantly doing something to show us various ways of mixing techno. Not to imply that you must only play each song for 2-3 minutes before mixing out.
Couldn't agree more, no techno fan wants to hear a DJ mashup tracks, they just wanna hear the tracks.
Yes, I only started to Dj to hear tracks as is without stopping, and if the transition has a cool sound than even better.
This is so good! Post more mixing techniques for techno like this pleaseere

Thank you for this awesome tutorial! Just what I needed to learn right now. 💜💜💜
The best mix set ive heard thanks shout out for this dj
lol must be your first one to say that
finally techno on this channel
half of the tracks sounded like tech house for me as a harder techno fan, but video itself is good for educational purposes, as always
Omg i cant belive nowdays people still thinks there is just one style of techno, anyways this is more like melodic techno or progressive techno or modern techno.
Thats Not techhouse you hard techno fan
thats not what I've asked your opinion about
I can’t believe there are still people on UA-cam going on about how they are hardcore fans of something, and trying to be the authority on the subject. By the way... no melodic techno or tech house is 127bpm.
@@domdraper3221I cant believe there are still people trying to deny someone's opinion on the internet. Thats how I felt about the tracks in video. I don't tell you that you feelings about it is wrong, okay?
And clear your tiny eyes, I didn't say about being hardcore fan, I said about being fan of Harder Techno style of music, so stfu
Tripping on that first song
Thanks for that, really helpfull video. Was looking for how to add tension before drops... just practice now with all these effects !
That‘s just about what I did but i never really saw it so perfectly explained and in detail. Learned some really interesting stuff! More confident to play some more techno in my sets from now on. Really nice video! Keep it up :)
Check Club ready dj school on yt. There is a video about mixing techno way better than this. Trust me. you'll be amazed, dear friend.
KDOG thanks man! I‘ll look into that :)
This is tech-house/drumcode techno.
techno is fun to mix as you can layer it up nicely, much more easily than with some other genres.
Ok wait this is so good 😭
Those notes are really handy. Thanks.
I was w8ing for this! Thanks!
How come you’re barely mixing with the high and mid EQ’s? Basically just switching out the lows. Would be cool to see a more in depth mix with not so many effects rather more EQ mixing.
Depending on the elements of each track, techno tracks are quite similar in that you can stack one on top of another without them fighting for headroom, which is why DJ James ended up not using so much Mid and High EQ, but its also down to preference! If you prefer to use the whole EQ strip then that's awesome too! I just wanted to comment and hopefully help answer your question 😁🙏🏻
No need to use the higher parts of the eq . The kicks always fight with each other for the space and it sounds crap. That’s why it’s good to swap the kicks out. As long as you mix in key, the mix will sound great as long as you controll the low end.
I usually mix the high and mid EQs as well, but I'm mostly mixing trance and melodic techno.
I feel sometime the kick's low mids are spread in mid region of the mix. Each track is produced differently, it's the trained ears which distinguishes whether we have to Eq the appropriate signal in-order to have a better mix.
welcome to techno mixing...
I think it's a pretty neat mix. I like using the echo set to 3/4 time and using that on occasion.
Wow....🙌👐🔥🎶first ever set i've listing to the end well done...💪
Great stuff man. Amazing channel! Thanks!
What was the point of looping the first measure in the head phones for so long without even doing anything with the channel the whole time? Perfect time to of been doing tons of other fun things and just pushed play on the phrase when it dropped. Instead of wasting a loop for 16 measures just to count it in your head phones. I dunno maybe i missed something. But i didn't see that looped used or that channel it was on used untill After the phrase came anyways.
absolutely looping for no reason, just to exit on the beginning of a phrase when he could have started it then =/ i hope people don't think this is what you shuold be doing
BAM BAM BAM BEM BAM
nice set - more of these please!!!
Loop Loop Loop
Nice one, thanx :)
with love from Belarus
Hey guys, is there any chance that somebody has the list of songs played during the mix? Awesome job btw, this is super useful!
Check DJ Kondix 😎
Nice mixing, there are so many ways to mix and schools of thought. Personally, I love hearing the new track bass overlap the older track bass as it comes in, kind of like in old school hardcore techno. I don't use loops unless I absolutely need them and let the natural structure of the songs overlap. This is fantastic too though. The more tools the better. Either way, this homie has some serious skills.
amazing set bro, congratulations... amazing tracks too
Incredible set and video
Brilliant video. I'm wondering if there is a way of minimising the sound wave to align both songs drops as you did in minute 15:00 but in a ddj 400? Would be highly appreciated. Thanks

Hey Crossfader guys, why are you not using the "Crossfader"?

awesome man thanks for all the good videos
The 2 tunes mixed at 10.00 are lethal!!!
I’m a Dj and also a techno producer and in my humble opinion electronic music is made to change every 8 bar loops within intro , verse , brake down , drop , verse and outro.
As Dj I never mix during the climax ( brake down , drop or even last verse) . I Always mix on the outro, putting the last 8-16 bars of the intro of incoming track right before the first verse and mix it with the last 8 bars of the last verse of the track that’s been played just to have a neat and clean transition. In this video he mixes right on the drop and the song is still alive full of energy and after he changes low ends with the verse of the incoming track with the full of energy ending drop&verse and the new track that’s coming sounds really weird .
I’ve learnt how to mix techno after watching pro DJs mixing and if you’re only Dj, please always count 32 beats before hitting the play button of the incoming track , and try to mix the new track right before the outro of the tracking that’s ending .
techno music is not just change track by track , techno is to travel and take the crowd into a trip, with soft transitions , also last thing and probably most important, always mix in key ,
I liked how he teaches the effects and different things you can do with color fx .
This was nothing more than a showcase of potential transition techniques. That's all.
Your sets and mixing style sounds very boring and typical, to be expected and non creative. Where is the soul in that? Sounds robotic. Just the simple basics. Techno is made for mixing 3-4 tracks at once. And mixing some samples and fx in or bassline or w e in with a build up makes it unique and creative and can show true talent of its phrased right and on cue and in key with same energy. Make it sound like one. That takes raw talent and soul.
@@MB-sq2xv with all respect techno and any music is not made to mix 3 or 4 tracks at the same time , check Cristian Varela sets, there is not point of having 3 channels up and feeling you are the best dj ever, i am not the best Dj or producer but at least I make my own music and I have enough creativity to finish tracks, if I wanted to make a unique mix I would play Ableton live session instead mixing 3 tracks at the same time putting effects on top, also anybody can be Dj now-days, but make good music and turn a 8 bar loop into a full track is other thing, I rather be creative making music than mixing others people tracks in a Dj set.
as I said before I'm not the best Dj but I know how to make a party and I've played in some clubs without receiving tomatoes in my face. Btw thanks for watching my video. cheers.
Mixing in key is the most boring way to mix, let it go!! You describe mixing as some sort of formula that you repeate over and over again, again boring! Learn to play a set where you mix each track in a different way. If 2 tracks have a completely different key doesn't mean you can't mix them, they just need a different aproach... If you want more energy from your mixes, keep them shorter and mix in the next track faster... If you need the crowd to breath a little, make long mixes. The key-word is variation here!! Don't rely on the fx, the fx are a bonus. If you play out not every venue has a fancy pioneer-mixer... There could be an old dateq-mixer without fx. Then it's up to your skills to mix a decent set with enough variation to keep it interesting...
for me, this is "drumcode techno" if u know what I mean.... not a big fan of it ..
The power of the low "rumbling"frequency it's amazing c'mon....maybe the nowadays techno have more trancy sounds in but the tracks sound big
@@lzg3221 just very generic
as a begginer training vid its good, it covers alot of functions. track selection is another ball game entirely
jup. this is the Drumcode sound. its pretty good to get people interested i think if they've never really listened to techno before. one quickly diverges from this imho. Its just the "pop" of techno i believe. which is not necessarily a bad thing to have around, since the field is enormous anyway.
Gatekeeping dance music is so gross
Very intuitive. Thanks mate
I got an idea how mixing and thank you very much for this video
I have (maybe a dumb) question: he set CH1 to A and CH2 to B, and his crossfader is set almost fully to B, why is he doing that? and how can 1 sound as loud as 2 if the crossfader is almost fully on B?
The curve is super steep so it doesn't affect the volume until it reaches either side fully
I know in rekordbox this can be adjusted to your liking (File>Preferences>Controller>Mixer>Channel fader curve)
Probably similar in other softwares
I thought maybe the cross fader was broken so it required to the right a little . I don’t know.
At 3:45, I noticed you had to keep adjusting the beat matching; this happens a lot to my mixes as well even though the BPMs are equal. Any tips on how to not let the track always run away from the other? If any in the comments sees this and has some advice, I'd appreciate the response.
happens to me too, hate it...
Few reasons for this, sometimes tracks are not actually the BPM that the software reads it as, although this is usually not too common.
The most likely reason is that CDJs and controllers only show the BPM to 1 decimal point - so even if it says 138.0 on both tracks, the BPMs are probably not exactly equal. For example one track might be 138.00 and the other is actually 138.09, but both get read as 138.0, which means the second track is going to be slightly faster and go off beat.
Unfortunately paying attention and jogging the wheel/slightly adjusting the BPM when the beats go off is the only solution to correct this, unless you’re using sync. Adjusting the BPM fader to +6 rather than +10 or wide will make it easier to adjust the BPMs more accurately, since if you’ve got it on wide a slight nudge will be a much larger BPM increase/decrease because of the scale.
@@TwStTempo Thanks for this
Well, SYNC..
Don't trust the bpm displays they're usually off.
I love this, thank you so much for these tips.

Can someone explain me why the person is using the jog wheel so many times when the beat shows that it is matched on the screen on my ddj-400 if i time the next song right i dont even have to touch it or when i match the beat i don't get it am i doing something wrong?
The grid of some records are not correctly placed sometimes, mabye Thats why he is constantly correcting with the jog, anyways The sound quality of This pioneer xz is much higher and more precise than your ddj-400 and you can apreciate better all The incorrections on your mix.
glad I'm not the only one wondering the same shit
@@SolaRniV yeah i don't really get what the guy on top said but i will just follow my own skills and how i do it i think the way i do it is the right way so im not reallly gonna look at how other people do
@@bObsy. Aight so as you have the tracks running they might go out of sync. In rekordbox this means that the beat indicators are no longer aligned. This can lead to the kicks/mids to sound out of sync. You can then use the jogwheels to make microadjustments to re-align the beats of the two tracks. This can also happen if the BPMs are off by just 0.01 (e.g. 127.0 vs. 127.1BPM) - at some point the tracks will be ever so slightly out of sync, thus needing re-adjustment.
If you use beat sync it doesn't really matter. If you are always on beat then you're a liar.
Enjoy mixing! The DDJ-400 is a sick controller :)
You are not doing something wrong, this person likes to play with the jog. Use sync if you are playing for a crowd. Make sure you beatgrid manually all your tracks, against a single specific track. That way you don't even have to touch the jog wheel at all. It was hard to watch this guy keep messing with the beats.
THANK YOU 🙏❤️
Wow this was dope 💯
isn't techno ideal for 3 deck mixing?
Yeah... And the only good reason to get an XDJ-XZ instead of an RX2 is because you can plug a 3rd deck into it...
Yeah it is, but that takes a lot more skill to chop elements and keep everything synced up, whilst not sounding overly cluttered. 95% of techno DJs will just transition from one track to the next because they’re too lazy or just not skilled enough to incorporate more dynamic mixing.
can we get a track list :)
you can read the names on the xz..

100% right. Last saturday i made an update to the lighting. After installing i needed a test set. So.... i was only about to mix for about 30 minutes but ended up with a 2,5 hour long techno mix streamed live on youtube. ua-cam.com/video/ntQsllMuKm0/v-deo.html
@@benedekkiraly395 I have tape delay in one single bank, allowing me to tweak it a bunch and alter how it sounds. I have iceverb in another single slot, again get a ton of sound control here.
The two other banks are mapped to a pad mode to swap out different FX combos. I generally use a bunch of different flangers, macro fx, delays, and beatmashers here.
Not a fan of the spiral fx, it sounds out of sync. I feel like it belongs on the tomorrow land mainstage with all the big room/psy trance nonsense.
Psytrance nonsense? You do know actual psytrance has an underground scene as strong as the techno one?
@@narxes of course, but the mainstream side of psytrance kinda spoiled for me, like what timmy trumpet and W&W do. I'm a fan of hilight tribe and mandragora mainly but even them have blown up a bit in these last few years
@@isaacbourn417 i wouldn't even call that psytrance, they just emulate a couple of psytrance characteristics like the triplet kick in a generic EDM track and put the psytrance label on it... Kinda like what Skrillex did with Dubstep, he made music with no DUB elements in it and put the dubstep label on it.
@@narxes right, also timmy trumpet's psytrance is usually ghost produced, he used to be more of a Melbourne bounce artist.. And wait, if you mean dubstep as the official genre, yes, skrillex didn't really make dubstep he was an ace at brostep and riddim. Less effects and better beatmatching would make this mix a lot better
The beat matching wasn't actually off though.

Nice mix but there are some things i have to mention: Techno sets arent made withe the Intention to keep the mix interesting with overusing the effects. Techno tracks speak for themselves. Example: T78 - The Outsiders. And mixing without using the high and mid equalizer is not how you should mix techno tracks. And last but not least: Techno Transitions are usually longer than the ones showed. It is still a great sets which shows what beatmaching level you need to mix techno tracks together and i love to here some techno tracks played. Have a nice weekend 🖐🏼
