      D max is a 4cylander vs ford is a v8(or more) - double the rego costs in qld? the boat your towing would give most 4 cylinder trucks a hard time. Also is the $100k more cost worth it for towing truck? Maybe if you are working the ford for a living towing other stuff

    Love the content. I’m here in the US and drive a similar ford except with 35” tires. The newer diesels are amazing. Unloaded highway consumption is about 20mpg or about 12L/100km. It’ll do about 15 mpg or 15L/km towing heavy. So your consumption with that full kit is pretty reasonable. As an aside, there is a great company here called built right industries that makes a dash mount that fits that cubby on the upper dash. Great place to mount cameras, radios, phones, etc.

  • @davidpeterson3147

    Here in the US we measure by Miles per gallon and my F350 (which is the next step up) runs around 21mpg empty (11.2L/100KM per google conversion) and I have pulled loads as high as 73,000lbs (33,112KG) around the same fuel economy as you got with the boat. So they are in fact pretty efficient for their size.

    As soon as I saw this competition, I bought some tickets! I had little doubt that the Rameater would NOT be a disgusting fuel hog, especially when towing, compared to other vehicles. I am glad that Jason made this video to prove the point. He has even made the comment somewhere that this truck uses less fuel than his 200 series Land Cruiser.

    Our F250 ran around aus including quite a bit in sand down to 15psi in central aus towing a 4t bushtracker and we averaged 16.5kpl over 37,000kms for the trip.
    Only upgrades were cold induction and easy right foot!
    We stayed off freeways etc and sat on 80kph max on secondary roads where we could. She had 600hp to use when we needed it.
    Ps Simon would be happy you filled his tank!

  • @davidstowar6636
    @davidstowar6636 2 роки тому +3

    Testing fuel economy accurately is hard. There's so many variables that can have an effect on the result.
    Driving into the wind adds to your consumption so you need to account for that even if it's only a breeze.
    Air temperature changes the power output of the engine. On a hot day you can lose 20-30hp so if you do a comparison it's more accurate if you do it on the same day at the same time traveling in the same direction.
    Different fuel bowsers have different shut of mechanisms and your pump can shut off at different amounts depending on how you hold the nozzle, so if you want to compare accurately you need to control that in your tests. If you want to do this test and have high accuracy fill up at the same servo at the same bowser on both the before and after fill up.
    Even the slope on the driveway at the servo can have an effect on how much goes in the tank before the pump clicks off.
    Another important thing is how the car is driven, we all know a lead foot chews the gas.
    Many people when talking about fuel economy they think it relates mostly to the engine, which it probably does but aerodynamics is a big factor too.
    Raising the car kills the aerodynamics and so does light Bars, roof racks, towing mirrors, wider tyres, tool boxes. So even though we might have the same car and same engine out of the factory as soon as we start doing mods they become different cars.
    What I've found over time with different cars is fuel economy depends less on engine size and more on the gross vehicle mass.
    If I towed 2 tonnes behind a corolla and 500kg behind a LandCruiser they would both have a similar gvm and surprisingly they would have a similar fuel usage too.

  • @WhyWouldYouDrawThat
    @WhyWouldYouDrawThat 2 роки тому +3

    interesting comparison. One thing i’m wondering is how similar the driving technique was. if i e.g. leave cruise control on while towing…. way more fuel (which is a bad idea with a big load anyway).

  • @aslkdfjhg
    @aslkdfjhg 2 роки тому +1

    On the highway most of the 'work done' is used to overcome aerodynamic drag. Engine capacity and weight are more of a concern for lower speeds where you are accelerating and decelerating.
    A car and 500kg trailer on the highway will always beat a car with even 75kg on the roof. This is why Prados and 200 series often get similar figures with barwork attached.
    If you're going on a road trip, consider a small trailer instead of putting it all onto the roof.

    I'm actually kinda surprised it got fuel economy as bad as it was to be honest. I've got the previous gen F-truck (same engine, but 6 speed trans, not the 10 speed in yours).
    I've got larger tyres, tray/canopy, tuned, but missing some of the other extras you've got (bullbar/roofrack etc.). I can get ~13l/100km cruising at 100kmh highway, in mixed driving (including frequently towing a tandem trailer) I average 14.5l/100km. I could get 11l/100km on the hwy when it was bone stock. She was pretty thirsty crossing the Madagan in the Simpson (probably close to 30l/100km), but in general I get equal, or occasionally better than my mates V8 cruisers, and quite a lot better than friends with Y62's, particularly if we are both towing.

ONce your right foot gets hungry offroad etc. your going to be feeding the fuel in hard and its going to chew hard as it has lots of spare power to use, IE beach. Has the odometer been corrected for those 37" tyres (I assume they are bigger than factory fit), if not you travelled more km so economy would be even better. Same Question for Dmax as she has 32" or 34/35" instead of factory 30", I know from my BT50 on 30" SPEEDO WAS 5% low and bang on with 32" (not sure if odometers also under read).
    Could improve your figures by 5 or 10%

    I thought my brick on wheels Wrangler Rubicon on 35s at 12/100 was bad. And it’s a 3.6 petty.. I think petrols are getting more efficient than diesels. Steve

    Towing a 2.2t van and car 2.7t. So I don't understand why you got 18s????

    Wow that Dmax drinks fuel. My Hilux has a built 1KD runs 40psi of boost and makes 300hp at the tyres and I get 13L/100km towing my 2000kg caravan which is much larger than that boat. I also tow with my cruise control set to 115kmh and I overtake at every opportunity.

    Considering my stocko patrol gets 15lp 100 it’s not too bad. But fuel use isn’t the issue. Insurance, somewhere to park it, it might be legal in Queensland but I think the cops in other states would look at the suspension and tyres and give you a nice canary.

      @rich7447 Рік тому +1

      I thought that you were allowed to go up 2" above stock on tire size in AUS. The largest tires that you can get on a F250 are 35s. You can get 37s to fix on a stock F250 Tremor.
