The Geiranger Fjord - Barren Majesty, Norway | Treasures of the World

Among the fjords of Western Norway, the Geiranger Fjord holds a special rank. Like no other, this fjord, nestled deep in the land between high mountains, has attracted tourists for well over a hundred years: nature lovers, "Northern travelers," like the last German Emperor, Wilhelm II, who repeatedly visited here aboard his yacht "Hohenzollern." All were captivated by a landscape that even Norway's Queen Sonja could only describe as "majestic."
She did this in a guestbook at one of the old farms on the steep banks of the fjord. These farms are mostly situated on high cliffs and can only be reached by steep paths. None are farmed today; the last were abandoned in the middle of the last century. Life there was too barren, too arduous, and also too dangerous, in such isolation. The inhabitants moved away from here, many to America. Today, however, the farms are protected from decay and have been rediscovered as cultural heritage.
