I actually have a similar story, I'm from Baltimore but years ago I was a rapper with a group called Black Clan and we were building a buzz n shopping our music so we went to New York which obviously is the Hip-hop Mecca. We went to every borough pushing our music so when we got to Harlem n Manhattan we went to Sylvia's soul food n ran into so many celebrities including Nas n Jay-Z. Jay was very nonchalant and a bit funny acting towards us it was like the min we said we was from Baltimore he started ignoring us. But Nas was cool as a fan he was talking to us like he knew us and actually asking about us we tried to push our music but both Nas n JayZ was so young in their careers during this time to make any moves for us as they were trying to establish themselves as well this had to be during Nas 1st album but him just being open n friendly to us always stuck with us.

Facts, I met Nas and Jay at the Bellagio how can I be down music convention in Vegas in 98. I was out there trying to get on and when I went up to Jay and said that streets is watching is fire, nigga looked at me like I was crazy and just nodded, i kept it moving. Jay Z seems shy and insecure even with a boat load of money and material things. Probably has a lot to do with his childhood; he probably was teased frequently about his awkward looks? Nas is more Mr. Personality, naturally cooler and definitely more good looking than most rappers. In essence when you know you got it you don't have to be aloof and insecure like Jay Z naturally is; probably through no fault of his own? Both men are very gifted and intelligent, one is just overall more attractive to men and women!
