  • This cabin build would just have collapsed! OUR FIRST CABIN build was UNSAFE, the joists are too few and not properly supported. Plus we get the floor fitted in our new cabin, install the heating (a Vevor diesel heater) AND get a one stop electrical solution fitted using a Bluetti AC200.
    It's been a busy week off grid!
    We are living OFF GRID with NO mains electricity, NO mains water or sewage. Can we build our dream life homesteading?
    Follow our daily lives in this new series to find out our successes and failures as we learn how to survive in the woods!

    I know it’s an extra expense, but I would insulate the walls and roof if you haven’t. As my sister says, “better to be looking at it, than looking for it”😊❤

      We're definitely insulating the roof. We had planned to do the walls but in 2 minds now with double air gaps also sealed behind the plaster when that goes up..

    Great to see you back with a new video. Progress on the cabin build is looking good. As for the old one we live and learn to what works and what doesn't. The chicks look great.
    Hope you are all keeping well and looking forward to slightly warmer weeks ahead. AL

    Gosh! I am well impressed with the floor boards and they have fitted well. Great thinking with the bluetti and adapter for the heater and the difference will be no more freezing damp air for Rosie in winter, which I would think that the tent will have. I like the quick change of glasses Dom, never quite knowing what ones will be next.👓🥽

      Haha on the specs, was 4 weeks between the start and end of the video and bought the new glasses when I was back in the uk 😎👌
      Heating is great, have a smaller one in the van and very toasty, bit noisy but super cheap to run 👌
      Hope alls good with you?

      @@TheWildlandersOffGrid All good here thanks, doing a part time van driving job which takes me out and about in the sticks. Very enjoyable and i had no choice really because my pension barely covers the bills. Your ten days back in the uk may have shed some light on how things are currently, just like we knew it would be.

    Yout not worried about rodents getting into the polystyrene? One of my areas was lined with polystrene under tiles,what a nightmare,it was a city of rats..very aggresive not at all scared of people,dogs or cats rats! Not a fun few days ripping it all out.

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  5 місяців тому +1

      Rodents, are, always, a concern here but with osb under and floorboards over hopefully not.... That and the catio will be built on the back so sure any rodents, will be fearful! 😻😹

  • @SolarLantern424

    WARNING: apparently polystyrene insulation can react with the sheathing cables are made with which can leave you with bare wire which can be dangerous, so do be careful when you put in wiring. Make sure there is no way it can come into contact with the polystyrene. Forewarned is forearmed. Cabin is looking really nice now. It's great that you managed to re-use the floorboards in spite of what happened. Little cabin appears to be a really nice space! :)

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  5 місяців тому +1

      Didn't know that but will make sure no wiring is on the polystyrene... Think downstairs, walls we've decided no insulation is needed as, so many air barriers.
      Thanks again 😊🙏👍👌

    Cabin is looking good, i insulated a workshop using UHT cartons stacked in the voids like bricks and filled the gaps with expanding foam once set they were solid and the foil and the air void of the empty carton worked well, just took a few months to collect the cartons.. and those heaters are great, pump the warm air into a metal bin full of rocks, drill about 20 20mm holes in the lid hey pesto a heat store, stops the heater cutting in and out so frequent.. and if you dont mind me asking what was the size restriction on the cabin?... love what your doing..

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  5 місяців тому

      I love your use of uht cartons. Our friend builds with hay bales and pallet woods. The use of alternative and recycled things is always of interest to us.... Like the rock heat store idea too....
      Permissions wise here it's convaluted as there's law and there's actuality. Each Camara follows its own different 'rules' so what maybe allowed in one isn't in another. Some allow so called temporary structures others won't allow anything you can live in. Ours didn't want any kind of large concrete foundation and said they weren't particularly bothered or interested in anything under 25sqm. The key thing in most cases though is to have an urban licence on part of your plot. Here there's generally a way. Almost all ruins can get permissions and any plot over hectare can normally build a new house.... But it's all very subjective!
      We, always, advise peeps, to go to their local Camara, before buying

      @@TheWildlandersOffGrid thank you for such an in depth response, something i meant to add, is i have also used old car tyres, level the area under the tyre, i built on a bank so one side i had a row of single tyres and on the other 3 tyres stacked, and filled them with rocks and cement, with a post cemented iin the middle, to mount the floor beams too. the tyre acts like a large concrete foot that sits on the ground.. don't even need to dig a hole..

    • @TheWildlandersOffGrid
      @TheWildlandersOffGrid  5 місяців тому

      Nice idea on the tyres....
      Always fancied building with tyres....
