And I'd be willing to bet you my life savings that, in 1979 when this LUISA MILLER was telecast, a group of opera "lovers" was sitting around listening to, say, the 1964 recording of LUISA MILLER with Moffo, Bergonzi, and MacNeil and saying, "The singing here is so much better than the singing in the current Met revival." In other words, it's invariably the case that "the best singing" already took place 15 or more years earlier than whenever one happens to be listening (eye roll).
On the other hand, I'd be willing to agree with you that Miller's music would have sounded so much better sung by an actual baritone than by 2018 Domingo.

I saw this performance live on PBS in January 1979. The Met could tthen still assemble a generally worthy cast for a Verdi opera.

Nobody was ever better than Moffo, Bergonzi, MacNeil, Tozzi, Verrett, and Flagello in '64!
