Remember how fresh & relatively musical Pavarotti sounded in those days when he was singing roles that favored his bright LYRIC tenor? An even better example is his 1968 studio recording of L’AMICO FRITZ with Freni in which his splendid lyric tenor instrument was perhaps unmatched at that time. Wunderlich had passed away 2 years previously & Carreras was still a few years away. Both Carreras & Pavarotti were bona fide LYRIC tenors & in my mind should have remained in this repertoire longer. By the 1980s they were both either because of health crisis’ or unwise repertoire choices, no longer able or willing to fulfill their full potential in my opinion.
Louis Quilico sounds in great form here! We would be dancing in the streets to hear a Verdi baritone of this caliber today. No baritone "hooked" the top voice with more beauty of tone than Quilico. One can count his peers in that respect on the fingers of one hand! And what a great cast!
Katia Sounds completely different here. She's unrecognisable! She sounds Italian. And the voice is full and spinning. This is not the Katia as the one singing 5 years after this.
she was most unwisely forced by Karajan and others to take parts totally unsuitable to her voice (Aida, Turandot!!!) and she unfortunately succumbed to their wishes
I've just listened to the first 22 minutes. Lovely overture. The rest is Verdi struggling unsuccessfully to achieve what Donizetti had already done six and seven years ago. ..... (see: Maria Padilla, for one.)

Carreras never in the same division as Pavarotti. nor anyone else was for that matter...imop.
