    This is the best NO ANTIFREEZE winterization video available; especially if you are a Minnie owner. I struggled for a day and a half until I found this video. So long stress! Thanks for posting!

    Ice only does damage when the lines or pipes are full of water , the ice will expand and burst even iron pipe if it freezes, that being said, a little remaining water will not hurt because if it freezes it has room for expansion ! This I know from winterizing a carpet cleaning truck for 40 years ! You're video was spot on but you don't need every drop of water out !

      Thank you for your insight on this important subject. Yes, the system doesn’t need to be perfectly dry. We just need to be sure that no water is trapped in valves or in the the pump. Great comment and I appreciate you watching.

      It has always worked well for me. It must be done properly though, or it could cause serious problems and expensive repairs, especially in very cold climates. Our winters in North Carolina are not that cold.

    I enjoyed your winterizing approach. Seems like it would be really effective - just getting all the water out of the lines. That, and maybe a combination of putting some antifreeze in the traps would work for our use, as the 5th wheel is located permanently in a lake RV park - connected to sewer. Antifreeze would help seal for smells.. great instruction!

    Man this was smooth. You know your stuff for sure. Smart to run the air to finish it off. I use antifreeze in my black and gray on occasion but never in my fresh water. I know they say it’s ok but I don’t trust that. This was an awesome video. The detail you provided here is very helpful. Thank you for sharing. Like BluWave I have no black tank flush.

    Brand new RV owner and this was very helpful. We plan on using our Regency Ultra Brougham in the colder months to head to a warmer area for a little short trips. I didn't want to put anti-freeze in all the lines. We did decide to put it in the drains and toilet though. We felt fine with it only headed to the gray and black tanks. I worry a little about the pump as people mentioned and our fresh water tank being truly empty, but hopefully we got everything emptied. (our low point drain is near the outside shower - doesn't seem like it would empty the tank dry.) Thanks again - happy camping.

    • @JurgensJourneys
      @JurgensJourneys  2 роки тому

      Happy camping to you too and congrats on your new camper. I understand your concerns about the pump and tank, but it has never been an issue here in the foothills oh North Caroline. We do get stretches of low temperatures in the teens and highs below freezing for a few days, but it’s rare. I don’t know about the extreme weather in the north. I’ve used this method for 30 years on five different campers with great results. Use your own judgment on your location and equipment. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Thanks for the video. I'm in South Texas, just 15 miles from the gulf and did not think I would have to winterize this far south. Wrong!!! We have a DEEP freeze coming this weekend, likely to get down to 15 degrees. (Sunday night for 2-3 days) so I worked on my RV today. The fitting to blow out the lines was real easy to make. I bought all the stuff I needed at a hardware store for about $11. I couldn't find the low point drain, so I skipped that part. I drained the hot water heater, fresh water tank and blew out the lines, including the toilet. I emptied the gray and black tanks when I got home from my last trip, so they did not need any work. Now I have to worry about my house. It's a older home on blocks, so I have freezing potential there. I have insulated all the exposed pipes I could reach and will let the water dribble all night, including the garden hose in the back and maybe 3 faucets in the house. I can't remember the last hard freeze we had here in South Texas, probably 15-20 years ago. Thanks again.

    Nice video! I used to use a similar method, but one year I ended up with a cracked faucet when I de-wingerized. It gets well below zero sometimes here. Now I blow everything out as you do (except I catch the fresh water in a pitcher at the faucets, instead of a bucket at the tank dump), then I use a winterizing valve at the pump and antifreeze to just get a bit of pink at each fixture.
    Then run the pump dry and blow all the lines out with the compressor again. I was surprised to get a bit of clear water, after I was sure I’d blown it out well the first time. Anyhoo, I blow all the antifreeze out of all the lines, letting the antifreeze run into the traps.
    That way I only use about 1 gallon, the pipes are empty- and anything that may be hiding in a low spot is antifreeze…
    I always sanitize and flush everything well in the spring, anyway.

    I did it that way once and the dometic toilet valve cracked on a Minnie Drop. Getting the water out of the pressure squirt toilet valve is absolutely necessary! Do not miss this or just make sure that the pressure gets to the toilet or just pump antifreeze into that particular line which can be done.

    Love the idea of not using antifreeze. Do you all get mice in the winter? Up in Canada we do. If there's a crumb of toast or a small opening anywhere come spring, there is a mice disaster waiting for you. Mice pee and poop is everywhere leaving you a two day mess to clean with bleach. Maybe some suggestions as to winterizing the trailer so these critters stay out.

    • @JurgensJourneys
      @JurgensJourneys  2 роки тому

      Hi Paul. I went to school with a Paul Smith, in the 1960s -70s. But to answer your question … I have never had a mouse in any of my campers. I don’t even get many bugs inside. Chase, my Mini, is pretty tight, so I suppose I would look for access points and limit ground contact such as hoses, stabilizers, etc. Food is certainly something to keep out of the RV. It could be that your colder climate might breed more invasive rodents, but if there’s nothing for them, and it’s hard to get in, mice shouldn’t be a problem. Best wishes and good luck this winter.

Also the NC weather can vary a lot, but we usually don't get long periods of sub-freezing temps around here. At least not till January or February. Then only a few days at a time below freezing. I wouldn't be too concerned, just informed and prepared.

    I always blow mine out like you do and would love to ditch the antifreeze. There is only one area however that concerns me. When I blow air from the city water port on the outside it blows the air to the outlet of the pump. No air gets through the pump to the inlet side which comes from the fresh water tank. Because there could still be water on the inlet side of the pump, I take the inlet side off and pump antifreeze through the pump and the rest of the system to be sure. I had a friend who cracked his water pump from freezing over the winter because of this so I have been afraid to try just air. Thinking now maybe after I disconnect the inlet to the pump I could blow air through the pump and also blow air from the inlet back to the fresh water tank. Thoughts? Thanks for doing such a clear job of explaining everything.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. I simply run the pump dry, and have never had a problem with it. Being in NC though, we don’t get the kind of cold that Canadians get. We occasionally have temperatures that go into the below zero Fahrenheit scale, but that is rare.

      i guess I wonder when running the pump dry if it isn't just starting to cavitate but still may be moving a little water because we are measuring it as dry a distance away at one of the faucets. I too would love to just fill and go without having to dewinterize.

      This is the fifth trailer I have done this with, and my thinking is that, even if a small amount of water remains in the pump, or in the system, there is not enough to cause any expansion damage. On mine, I can definitely hear when the pump is running dry, and with the drain valves open, I doubt that any water remains in the line, since the pump is probably pushing a little air when it's dry. I run it for about 5 seconds after I hear it going dry. But don't take my word for it. I'm not an expert, but just sharing my own experience. Thanks again, sir, for you comments.

I just did your method yesterdqy & thought everything went great except for when we moved the trailer back to where I park it some water came running out of the drain port , maybe a gallon, (water that feeds the water pump). It drained out when the trailer was leaning towards the door/drain side of RV. I made sure the trailer was level when doing this. Which means there was still some water present in the tank when I ran my water pump for the 5 seconds to purge the water from it. All that being said should i go ahead and try purging the pump again and blow air again to remove remaining water from the lines? Thanks for sharing your experience! Much appreciated! Dale

    Hello, can you please explain how you attached the air compressor fitting to that Camco plastic blow out plug. Thanks!!

    • @JurgensJourneys
      @JurgensJourneys  4 роки тому +3

      I don't know about the Camco plug. I used a water hose plug and drilled a hole in it that is slightly smaller than the air fitting threads. Then I heated the threads and screwed it into the plastic hole. I've been using it for over 20 years. I'm sure they sell those things, but I just made one.

    Mostly what I do , but seems silly to put that effort with the shop vac to clear the p traps. Way easier and faster just drop 1 cup of antifreeze down each p trap. Cost 2.50 takes, 1 minute. But hey you do you.

    • @JurgensJourneys

      I have never had a problem with it. I keep it cleaned out pretty well after each trip and keep sink drains closed for the grey tank. That might cause odor too. Thanks for watching and sharing your question.

      Also, I use full pressure of my compressor, but have as many valves open as I can, so system never gets pressurized enough to hurt anything. I let it blow for a good while. My only concerns are water pump. Doesn’t take much to mess it up. I also leave all valves in half open position. Ice normally does not break anything as long as it has a place to swell too. Keeps rubber washers from drying stuck as well. A little antifreeze in toilet bowl not a bad idea either, just to bowl valve from drying out.

    Quick question. The valves located in the closet. Are those the same as "low point" drains? Mine have caps located on the outside of the trailer, I don't think I have valves on my trailer like you do, just the capped outside fittings.

    • @JurgensJourneys
      @JurgensJourneys  4 роки тому

      Yes. Those are my low point drains. I have two spouts under the trailer that can be seen draining when I open them. Mine are not capped. I can't really say about yours, but suggest you look further or ask someone familiar with your particular model. I have had campers where the drains were located under a kitchen cabinet, or elsewhere. What kind of camper do you have? Thanks for watching.

    This is a great video! We're in Raleigh and getting a Micro Minnie 2106FBS. We'll likely have to winterize at some point during the winter, but also want the flexibility to take the trailer out and head put when the weather allows.
    I have a few questions on this method:
    1. It appears as if you drained the hot-water heater and fresh-water tank, but did not specifically blow them out. Is this correct, or did I miss it in the video?
    2. When you were using the shop vac to flush out the drains, were you sucking the water into the vac or blowing it out the drain valves?
    3. I don't remember seeing anything about flushing any water remaining in the water pump - we'll be doing some boondocking and will have water in there. What do you recommend for winterizing the pump?
    Thanks in advance for your help! :)

      Thank you, Ron, and congratulations on your new mini.
      To try to answer your questions-
      1. Right. These tanks drain completely without blowing them out.
      2. I was blowing the drains. Just be sure to leave the outside grey-water valve open for this.
      3. After draining the fresh-water tank, which feeds the pump, I simply run the pump dry for a few seconds.
      I appreciate your questions and wish you all the best with your new camper.

    • @JurgensJourneys
      @JurgensJourneys  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, once the fresh water tank has been emptied, there is only a little water left in the pump and line. You can actually hear the pump running empty, so I don’t let it run too long. Thanks for your question?
