When you think of Volvo, you think cars and trucks. But in recent history, Volvo was on the verge of owning one of the biggest gas and oil wells in the Northen sea, the same oil that helped Norway become incredibly rich. So what happened?

Volvo should have used Skillshare
Nah.
Nahhh. Swedish people highly intelect they dont need skillshare.
Skillshare just for peasant.

Good one 😂
"They almost came to own the majority of Norways oil". They were offered 10% of the proceeds of the Oseberg Oil Field, how does that come close to owning the majority? Did i miss something?
the norwegians also offered so invite the swedish goverement into the oil fund, if i remember correctly
@@grandicus oil fund didnt exist back then
@@b1dover what would be the oil fund*
10% is pretty big tho
Yeah but the rest was owned by the state
This is regrettable in hindsight but also perfectly understandable that the shareholders didn’t want to take such a risk.
Well if you want to earn a lot of money you will have to take a lot of risk ! (but yeah we are mostly risk averse so ... and you can only be when you are close to Russia lol bref)
you gatta specualte to accumulate ~ lamar davis from gta 5.
as a norwegian this is not regrettable :)
speaking as a dane volvos was EVERYWHERE back in the day and still are. The estate version is called the vet-mobile because everey country vet used to drive them. likewise the police used amazons and 140s and 240s also the post service and others. It was a very popular vehicle with the public as we share sorta the same climate as Sweden.
"funny story" when my mother was pregnant with me (32 years ago) she was riding in an Vovlo Amazon (late model) on a country road where a tractor had previosuly had an oil spill and they slipped, going off the road and rolled 3 times and nobody was hurt. Thanks to swedish safety engeneering I'm sitting here today drinking schnapps writing this. Yay Vovlo
refusist skål!
Volvo er kjent i skandinavia hehe :D 140, 240 osv
Ingen omkom. Volvo ye-heey!
It's inaccurrate to say that we were a combined state, though we were in a union. Norway and Sweden had separate governments (but a shared king)
So a Personal Union
Great video, BC. I learn a lot from your videos. This is another exceptional one about having good foresight
Volvo ceo to shareholders: *I KNEW IT! I TOLD YOU SO!.*

Awesome content like always. I see a you uploaded and I add it to my list right away lol big fan of the channel 💚

Great story. Never heard that one before.
As a Norwegian i would like to give my heartfelt thanks to the extra 6% of Volvo shareholders that said no. Thank You!

@@caiovinicius6891 Donald Trump being a successful business man
Its intrresting that Pehr G Gyllehammar did not come from a finance family which was (is) rare. He also made the decision to make smaller teams and a new type of line assembly that workers generally enjoyed more than the traditional line assembly.
You should Focus on Volvo trucks a bit more, they still lead the way especially in Europe
Man how does he make those smooth zooming in transitions. What a masterpiece!
> Now playing catchup with the rest of the world.
They've been doing real solid and making great cars for a good 10 years now.
I had no idea SKF was Swedish. Biggest ball bearing maker here in India.
And in south Africa as well
It just shows how far the company's reach is

They were offered 10 % if they invested and did all the work,, Norway had everything under control
Do one on SAAB!
Volvo are doing amazing Hybrid vehicles now, the XC60 is a sublime suv.
Hi can you do an episode about Steve Cohen?
Strange how 51% isn't considered a majority.
It is but for big decisions like this i presume they have a 2/3 majority rule
Volvo is doing great and are the world leader in several area's. Volvo AB is huge.
You focused to much on the smaller car part.
yeah but 10% of the Norwegian Oil/Gaz is still better so
Volvo's new design language is beautiful
Oh well damn, it's the shareholders yet again that denied a deal for Volvo to have a slice of that delectable Norwegian oil pie
Felix @5:59 (just a couple of frames)
this is getting more and more difficult.
Can you make a video on Chinese automakers I'm particularly interested in "Brilliance Auto"
They rarely do videos on less known companies who doesn't have worldwide recognition...it's more likely they will do video on Asia car brand like Tata(India), Hyundai, Kia(korea), and Japanese cars (Its a lot)...
How are you not at 1 mil yet? Tis baffling I tell ya!
He doesn't post regularly enough, once a week would do it.
Arent volvos the main car (not that there's a lot) in North Korea? Didn't NK steal a shipment or something?
Sweden is one of the few countries that has a good relationship with North Korea. Being neutral and all.
Did you talk about Domino's Pizza? The fact that its stock is worth more than Amazon and Apple is interesting.

Norway is very lucky.
They missed the bag 💰💲💴💶
make a video about Lenovo pls
Volvo should have hired Buffett as in house consultant in 78

Volvo give diretide pls
Honestly Norway would have just repossessed it from Volvo had they owned it.
Something that always bothers me. 6:16. Why are Chinese companies always unnamed yet ford was named. It’s kind of important when they influence a significant portion of the world
You missed the part where Volvo split into two branches... We got Volvo cars.. which your video covers but also Volvo trucks...
both are separate companies.
Do a video business and what learn from each.
This is a good example how nationalism and emotion hinder potential of a nation or a company.
Imagine losing billions because of some people who hate the other country
imagine selling your asset and your buyer offers you lottery as payment.
But, if they'd acquired the oil stake there's no way Norway would've let them continue keeping that giant cash geyser.
Wow thats a huge mistake6, 10% now worth billions dollars
Volvo is the best car brand imo. I can't afford a new one but omg do I wish I could.
Their SUVs are fantastic, no doubt.
Valvo? xD
Sources please?
Even if the deal went through, there is no guarantee whether the Norwegians will honor the deal, given so much money at stake. Nationalisation, confiscation of foreigners' properties is not uncommon in the oil and gas industry.
Of course Norway and Sweden would have honored the deal. We are talking about civilized countries here.
So Volvo isn't Sweedish.
Volvo is swedish. The subdivision Volvo cars however, isn't. The headquarter is still in sweden, but the company is owned by geely.
Now all Volvos build after 2020 are limited to 180km/h.
*Germans not buying Volvo anymore*
I did not know that. I'm German and considered buying a Volvo but an 180km/h limit is just ridiculous.
@@Swoerm You'll better stick to German quality:)
That's because Volvo is a sadly a Chinese company now.
@@rfwhyte Volvo still offers better quality for less money than the german counterparts.

what I am surprised is that in this times there is no already a controversy about volvo logo, you know about the "men" symbol and how it's "sexists"
♦
Well, Volvo didn't lose it. The shareholders lost it......
Norway actually offered SEK 200mil *and* 10% concession of Oseberg oil field for 40% of the company's *car manufacturing* only (instead of 40% of the whole Volvo since Volvo also has truck manufacturing facility). So the oil concession is not to substitute the money as stated in the video, but to compliment it. Also, SEK 200mil at that time would be equivalent to close to USD 90m instead of USD 80m as stated in the video.
Volvo for safety 🚗
*I don't get this. How is this Volvo's pride issue? It was the shareholders who didn't give the super majority vote.*
That sounds like a bad idea. A car maker makes inefficient engines in order to drive up the price of oil.
Yeah no thanks.
You think one of the smallest car manufacturer could manipulate the market price if oil by making bad cars?
