- Hello and welcome to Season 9!
On this season we will be taking a look at the Sega Saturn! We will be going over the technology, the games, and why it ultimately is an amazing platform even if it came in third place against the PS1 and Nintendo 64.
On this episode we have Burning Rangers, a unique and awesome third person action adventure game where fire is the enemy!
We will be back next week with another episode. Till then thanks for watching!

This honestly looks better than almost anything on ps1. There's a few ps1 games that could graphically compete with this, but this games lighting, sprites, and 3d animation is absolutely killer.
Saturn was awesome when the developers understood it. Like Powerslave...insanely talented devs made an awesome game
GunValkyrie reminds me a bit of this one, with the focus on verticality and movement with the jetpack. Although that one has much more complex controls.
Yeah they do have some similarities don’t they?
I've owned this game since a few months after release and had no idea whatsoever that upon beating it, you had random generated levels. This is my favorite saturn title. I've beat the game multiple times. Wtf is wrong with me, how did I never notice this after completing the game? Lol
Haha not sure. Now you know! Go check it out :)
Didn't realize this was made by Sonic Team! Very cool!
Yeah it’s an awesome random game from them
I like this game a lot because i am a real life volunteer bush fire fighter in Australia...although, i originally only ever joined up so i could tell the ladies i was a fire man! :D
Lol that’s as good a reason as any I assume! Be careful out there...Australia definitely seems to have too many fires lately! Those poor koalas clinging to people too...ship one here. I’ll gladly take a koala in :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica i hear that, no fires now because it's winter....seem to be dodging the pandemic and ww3 as best i can....are we half way through the year yet!?!!
Lolol 2020 is a dumpster fire of a year. Getting worse here in Chicago too...infections going up. Good thing making YT videos us a self-isolating activitt
Well played dude,,,!
Appreciate it!
Did you know that the song in the credits "just smile" was used in the credits of blinx the time sweeper?? ☺️
Haha I did not
@@VideoGameEsoterica you should give it a listen! Its like a little kitty mew-mew version!
Haha nice. I’ve actually never played that game either and I’ve always wanted to.
@@VideoGameEsoterica backwards compatible with xone, and 360 if you wanna give it a go
I’ll add it to my list :)
This is honestly one of the most bizarre games ever, IMO. Clearly this game was a labor of love - Sonic Team put incredible production value into the engine, the graphics (if you play it on an emulator in higher res the detail they added to the textures is insane), the voice actors they hired... it pushes the Saturn.
Except they made it about... fire fighting.
I'm not saying it's a bad game by any means or that fire fighting is dumb - it's quite fun - but with the weight they threw behind this game you'd think they would have made a game that would have appealed more and helped Sega out of the tight spot it was in. They could have used this production strength to put out a Phantasy Star game that would have been AMAZING. All of the ingredients were there to make it happen, but we got this instead.
Does anyone know how this game came about? Or WHY it came about???
Sega loved Fire Fighting. Check out Brave Firefighters too. Clearly Sega got stuck on themes...
Rail Chase, Rail Chase 2 and Magical Truck Adventure all had gameplay on railroad tracks lol
Once they found a theme they really stuck to it!
The question bugged me enough that I looked into it. Apparently when making Burning Rangers, the developer decided he wanted to make a game that instead of revolving around killing people it was purely about saving lives, and he thought firefighters epitomized that best apparently and could still offer the gamer a sense of urgency. For once, the wikipedia page was pretty thorough on the subject so kudos to whoever wrote it. I applaud the commitment and effort, but I can't help but continue to question if it was the appropriate time to pull something like that.
Good reasoning behind it but yes firefighting was an odd option. I’m sure in a way they were flexing their development muscles with Saturn by pushing fire effects as well. A design leading concept type of developmennt
Looks like you played with the 3D controller?
I actually played with the D pad. I don’t have an analog controller unfortunately. Need to pick one up eventually though
❤️
:)
It looks better in some ways and worse in others.
It’s definitely a different look that the PS1 but ok a technical level it feels equal to me at least
@@VideoGameEsoterica The lighting is definitely impressive for its time, and the the Saturn's shading on models is so unique. It has an almost pastels or airbrush look to it. Also texture mapping was slightly more accurate than PS1.
The lighting is pretty legit on it. There is definitely some texture perspective issue but that was basically part of gaming back then unless you had an N64. I don’t miss that aspect lol
The only thing i found really annoying about BR is you can't skip the darn training :/ ....originally bought the Saturn for Gun Griffon so i was over the moon when GG2 was released on Saturn.
Lolol the training...you see I clearly edited that out for the playthrough. It is a bit brutal
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yep...and 20 lashes with a rubber chicken to the developers of BR for not having a "skip training" button!!
Lolol. Why couldn’t you skip? Makes no sense
@@VideoGameEsoterica I was hoping someone found the secret "skip" button combo in a "walk through" :(
Aw man
3 Dollars at gamestop...😭
haha yeahhhhhhhh
It looks like an average PS1 game.
That’s my point :)
Way above average, there is actually a draw distance and no warping.
Burning Rangers always felt like a rushed game that was barely finished, it is like there was a lot of missing content that they just could not finish. The game is just 4 stages... that is just not enough.
It is way overated, coming from someone that has owned a saturn since 1995.]
Graphically it is ok, but regarding gameplay and fun? Nothing to see there.
I’d disagree with “nothing to see here”. Short def but plenty of fun to be had IMO
The game is amazing, what are you going on about?
Yeah I dunno either
@@costumeninja1914 The game is 4 stages.
