Nick "Eugene" Dinsmore talks with Chris Van Vliet from his home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He talks about how he created the Eugene character with Rip Rogers, why Eugene was so popular, did he think it was controversial or inspirational, his interactions with The Rock, Kurt Angle, Hulk Hogan, Vince McMahon and others, his time in rehab, being a trainer for NXT, his wrestling promotion called Midwest All Pro Wrestling and more!

JR helped sell the character so well on commentary. He seemed so sincere when he spoke affectionately about Eugene and was OUTRAGED when people tried to take advantage of him.
HHH was also on fire as a heel during this period, although some people insist on giving him no credit. When he took a selfie with Eugene and said “on the count of 3 say PEDIGREE!” and the crowd were so pissed because they thought he was gonna get him. Amazing.
Because HHH sucks
He did eventually. He did that nasty arm breaker from the top turnbuckle on him.
HHH was an exceptionally good wrestler, could cut a good promo, looked great, and could even be funny (although not as funny as certain other wrestlers such as The Rock, The Hurricane, and Eddie Guerrero to name just a few.) However, I always found him to be pretty lacking in charisma, and they gave him way too damn much TV time back then. I was never a big fan, and he just seemed like he should have been an upper mid card guy rather then a top guy.
@Kyroh Rin 5 mins of googling would have you not looking like an idiot.
@Kyroh Rin First off, maybe you can learn to speak engrish, secondly, what does Christmas have to do with being informed?
It's a shame that the WWE didn't have a long term plan where Nick started as the lovable Eugene, and then at some point, he does a heel turn where you find his being a lovable slow adult was all an act. Instant heat.
Interesting view. Would certainly get some heat for that.
Had Dinsmore stuck around in WWE a bit longer that would’ve been the endgame for the Eugene character. And it’s the only sensible way to book the gimmick in 2020 while minimizing the outrage from the woke crowd.
That would have been crazy heat!!! Good call.
So kinda like what they did with Luke Gallows in 2010.
They did botch his 2007 heel turn though
This was a fun character. Wouldn’t fly now days I’m sure but it was done mostly tastefully from what I remember. Just portrayed as a kid living his dream. Especially loved when regal was paired with him and cut that monster promo on trips when he assaulted Eugene.
Best Promo I've seen on TV that wasn't "old episode" or replay coz most of the attitude era I've only seen on replay
Unaga
💯💯💯💯💯
I always wondered how Eugene was doing these days, Haven’t seen him on screen in years! So cool dude thanks !
He has his own UA-cam chanel
His channel is literally just his name
I still remember playing his airplane minigame in smackdown vs. raw
Yessss!!!
Right
@Kyroh Rin it was Smackdown Vs Raw 2006 on the PSP I believe
@Kyroh Rin yeah. They also had this like poker thing as well. It was pretty cool
Spike Dudley and now Eugene! Chris giving us the interviews we didn't know we even wanted!
Eugene was dope I loved when he would use all the top guys finishers as regular moves lol
He had the best move set I played with him in the games
Sounds like every online 2k match I've ever been in 🥴
but his moves looked so soft ...
He was the Kirby of WWE.
Wrestlemania 21 was for me the special Eugene moment when he said "im at wrestlemania, this is the greatest night of my life" (my inner child felt that line lol) then Muhammad Hassan comes out and he points up the ramp saying "I know him" LOL CLASSIC.
In my opinion. CVV has absolutely the BEST quality content by a mile. Thanks for providing a great escape for a lot of us in these crazy wild times. It is GREATLY APPRECIATED! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Jake! I greatly appreciate you!
I saw him wrestled in Puerto Rico and everybody loved him. He did the spot when he kept running to the ropes and didn’t stop
Lol awesome
lol funny spot
Never ever heard a bad word spoke of Mr. Dinsmore. Seems like a legit good hearted guy.
Can’t wait to hear this one! I loved Eugene growing up thank you for this Chris god bless 🙏🏻
Thanks for listening!
Long have I waited for this interview!!
As a teen, I was legit convinced that Eugene was "special" since Nick portayed the character so convincingly - then growing up, learning he was Doink and his story just brings a big smile to my face and isnt that what his WWE run was about? ^^
It was around this time when I was growing up that I learned that WWE was fake, but I was still young enough to not be completely sure that everything was fake. I was convinced that Eugene really was special.
A testament to his acting ability
For me (I have a form of autism), the Eugene character was absolutely hilarious! I never saw anything about Eugene that was offensive.
Good ol'Eugene. lol I'll still never forget the rib he & Regal pulled on the fans in 2004 after Backlash in Edmonton.
In character, and that awful white jacket, he slowly pulls out from the arena in a minivan, side door wide open, waving out the window exclaiming "Look at me l'n driving... Look William... I'n driving!". Out runs Regal after the van shouting "No, no... Wait Eugene! Stop my boy! Wait for me!" 😂😂 It was hilarious.
Amazing interview So far Chris. Miss Eugene glad to see he’s doing good these days
Wow so that's Eugene from back in the day, I remember him he was always so funny.
I'm 27 & I'm Autistic. I was only diagnosed this year too & I never found Eugene offensive when I was a kid, he was one of my favourites actually! Perhaps there was some kind of subconscious connection between myself & Eugene, because I was treated differently too, even without a diagnosis until 17 years later. But, that being said, I definitely see why he is such a controversial character in 2020.
Regal, Tajiri and Eugene is a WrestleMania show stealer that should have happened.
I haven't seen Eugene since I was a kid this brings back so many memories
He was so good at that character! This made me realize how much I missed him and I didn’t even know it

Eugene, everytime I saw him come on t.v I always had a big smile on my face! Ah my childhood..
He also had a hand in Cena's training as well. He mentioned that long time ago on f4wonline podcast
😳Omg I was just watching Eugene vs triple h raw June 21 2004 ! Right now on WWE network! Great timing Chris!
It's like we planned it! haha
Eugene was awesome!! Mr. Dinsmore did an amazing job with that character. You're the man, Chris! Be well and safe, Sir.
Thanks, you too!
@@ChrisVanVliet I shall, thank you! ✌️
@@justafanofnerdculture7602 you got greedy
This is amazing! When you interviewed JTG and Eugene got mentioned I was so hoping you’d interview him lol this is perfect 👌
I literally met and saw him today in Essex UK. Amazing seeing someone i watched as a 12 year old kid in person!
I love Eugene, I remember him as a kid, before we had TNA visit our small town in muscle shoals, Alabama. In the Sheffield gym, Eugene came for a event that proceeds went to a girl with medical issues. I absolutely loved his main event. I was scared to meet him because he was so jacked. Lol 😂 great guy!
Should Interview Rob Conway. He was wasted in WWE. Just like La Resistance. They wasted them too.
Eugene was so over for a bit during his time. Cool to see you give this interview, CVV.
Leonardo decaprio played the best LD character ever on whats eating gillbert grape as arnie
As someone with a disability (Cerebral Palsy), the characters of Eugene and Dave Sullivan (WCW) showed me that there is room at the table for characters and wrestlers with disabilities (Gregory Iron, Zach Gowen).
he was a beast on ohio valley according to cornette
I grew up across the bridge from Louisville KY and watched OVW as a kid. Both Eugene and Rob Conway were amazing in the ring. My mom also went to school with Rob Conway and friends with him still.
@Kyroh Rin yes my mom went to the same school with Rob and lived in the same apartment building as him. She went to school with a bunch of different wrestlers who were in OVW that never got to WWE. I know people who would run into like The Big Show and other guys who were in OVW when they were here in the early 2000s. I lived in the same town as Eugene in 06.
@Kyroh Rin I haven't met Rob since I live in a different state for a few years. And I haven't met many wrestlers besides like Foley and a few others. I would see guys at the airport as a kid but would leave them alone because you could tell they were in a rush. But the few that never made it to wwe I've been around with our like extra family for me. But there's 2 guys my mom went to school with that did wrestle for OVW and died about 10 years ago. I remember one guy was playing with his kid on the Nintendo Wii and got hit in the head with the Wii remote and died. Very sad
Leonardo Di Caprio in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”, hands down the best actor in a movie playing that kind of role.
...That username tho xD
@@HioshimaFried huh?
Idk I like I am sam
Eugene was my fav wrestler during his run, the character was a hero to an 8 year old kid haha
Crazy, I just saw that segment with him, Rock, and coach.
if watching eugene didn't warm your heart you are not human
Eugene taught me to not judge people based on appearance but on spirit and character. He taught me to accept and support people of all walks of life. Thank you Nick Dinsmore aka Eugene. Thank you Chris for making this happen.
Chris is the man when it comes to these interviews I wish I could get the chance to talk wrestling with him love watching these interviews keep up the great work Chris
Nick Dinsmore has charisma I love it! Not that I didn't think he did, his Eugene character was amazing, but hearing him speak in his natural voice, he seems like a real good time to be around. Great interview, as always Chris!
Yet another great interview, Eugene was always talented and totally had the crowd. I’ve been wondering what he’s been up to!
Got to see him have a match with John Morrison in a House show.
Absolute mastermind in the ring
As Eugene or himself?
Hell yea CVV!!! I missed eugene I always loved his character or gimic glad to see he's still getting paid being a nxt trainer
The very first time I watched wrestling was an episode of RAW when The Coach was trying to get rid of Eugene, and then the Rock Returned to be Eugene's friend. The nostalgia just listening to him talk about his character is off the charts right now.
Nick Dinsmore is the best person i ever met in pro wrestling in person. Guy invited me into the locker room when i was changing in the backstage/hallway. He had no idea who i was or what was going on but he made sure i knew i was welcome in the dressing room like everyone else. Back then wrestling needed more guys like him and it got it luckily because thats how we have so many honnestly good people in the business today vs 10 or 20 years ago
I can't believe i just found this video!. Definitely gonna listen to it on my commute to work tomorrow
Way to shoutout Sioux Falls! Great city and even better people. Excellent interview as always, Chris! Well done.
👍👍. Thanks! Loved "Eugene"
He is not actually retarded it was just a character. That’s so cool
Most underrated character in wrestling
I work night shift at the hospital I listen to every video u upload interviewing these wrestlers ur a great host I really liked the David Benoit that was very much well needed ppl wanted to hear from him thanks so much getting me through the night with your videos
Early RA era memories...I would watch raw as a kid..n my grandmom would love him n would get upset when wrestlers beat him up.. still remember his segment with the coach n the rock returned..good memories
The interview I didn't know I needed to see 😁
If you ever think I wonder what happened to “this wrestler” look no further! Chris has or will interview them! 😂 With everyone you interviewed I’m glad I can still be surprised by your guest! Since Booker T was brought up in this interview, I would love if you got him on the show!
I can vouch 100 % that when i met Eugene at a raw in Beaumont, tx in 03 and got an autograph from him. Nick densmore was in character
Eugene was awesome in WWF he did the Rock bottom better and the Hogan Leg drop
Always loved the Eugene character. Ridiculous? Yes, but he made the character work much similarly to how Mark made the Undertaker work.
(Obviously not comparing the status and work rate but both characters shouldn't have worked on TV but the performers somehow made it over with the audience.)
I miss that hand wave
I loved the character so much and know, it was only for a limited time, but i enjoyed every Eugene Appearance. I often laughed at the typical Entrance :D
I loved the Eugene character back in the day. I remember when he was Raw GM and his office was a bounce house in the parking lot. And he had people play musical chairs for a title match which Jericho won. That show was in mine and Jericho's hometown and he lost an IC match against Orton lol.
Eugene and R-Truth would have been a great tag-team. Especially if you incorporate the Little Jimmy gimmick, it would have worked pretty well.
damn that would have been epic
both doink and eugene characters should be bin hall of fame
How is he not in the hall of fame
Loved him growing up. Helluva worker and good character. He made it work so well
Great interview Chris!! The Eugene era was an awesome time to watch wrestling lol
I live in South Dakota, and I can confirm that there was indeed no wrestling promotion of any kind in the state before Dinsmore started his. I didn't think there ever was, but apparently (at least according to Wikipedia) there was one from 97-98 called Music City Wrestling. Strange.
I actually met this guy saturday at a wrestling event here in Omaha. was super pumped to meet him and when i finally did I said hey man this is awesome meeting you ! I grew up watching you wrestle with triple h and william regal! And he just goes ok now lets put a big thumbs up for the picture! and that was it lol
Great interview! Thank you Nick and Chris!
Nick Dinsmore seems like a good soul.
shut up
Now I'm going back to watch EVERYTHING Eugene!
I had no clue Eugene did Doink in 03 that's cool.
Its good to see eugene again its been years since 2005 good one dude thanks 😁
CAN SOMEONE HELP?! what software is used to do these interviews?! it’s not skype?
It's Zoom 👍
Eugene on Raw in 2004 messing with Evolution and the Regal Eugene tag team, good memories!
Honestly I don't see a problem with Eugene, because they treated the character with realism.
Recently went back through Jim Cornette OVW Omnibus episode and that’s where I learned about Nick, and after I watched some matches I was pissed about the Eugene character
Finally i have been waiting for this so long i loved him so much thank you
We love Nick! He actually came to Iowa in 2019 and married my husband and I as macho man! It was so crazy to have someone we watched as kids marry us.
I hope one day you can be able to interview Taker. This was an amazing interview, Didn't know what happened to Nick
I remember when hhh beat the crap out of him for making him lose at a pay per view they busted Eugene open remember felt bad for him lol.
eugene is such a wholesome dude i really like him
He was definitly part of the Ruthless Agg. era
Nick Dinsmore is a talented guy. Much like Muhammad Hassan, he got completely screwed by his gimmick. He was so good at it, that it gave him nowhere to go when t was over. He was so identifiable as Eugene that it was impossible for him to be taken seriously or repackaged. I hate it for him. He deserved better.
Glad to hear that he is doing well!
Omg I hated this gimmick because he had my name. I was in freshman year of HS and all my friends clowned me 🤣🤣🤣🤷🏽♂️
Eugene was great. He wasn't mentally challenged.. He was smart and outsmarted many people
Great interview! Loved it! 💯
Anther Epic Interview. This is Awesome!! #SODAK #MidwestAllProWrestling #CVV #ChrisVanVliet
Thanks so much for connecting me with Eugene and making this interview happen! 🙏🙏
Thanks for this love the work you do Chris
This whole thing just made me smile
I think that's the best Mt. Rushmore I've heard of so far.
Great interview. I was wondering what he has been up to these days.
I think Eugene should be inducted into the hof. Imagine him giving a speech
Interesting story, I liked seeing this side of the character!
I'd love for a Royal Rumble return! Or even a one off! And love your stuff CVV!
Yes Chris come to Midwest all pro mania in July!!!
I was 15 watching Eugene he was so cool loved his gimmick
Awesome interview Chris 👍
