Thanks for this. I started not to watch the whole thing, because like many....I felt it was a little basic, but there's more to it than I thought. Good info about the extra turn on the spring and how to check it.
Jacob, you are a blessed soul. Your friendships, business acquaintances and your drive are leading you to a very fulfilling life. Thanks for sharing your journey with this old timer and YT friend.
I have a very very old Homelight chainsaw that belonged to my grandfather. I would say it's probably from early 60's. It's so rare I could only find one place in Poland that sold the spark plug for it. So I bought two plugs, and paid for the overseas shipping. It runs but have trouble with pull start. This video was super helpful. I don't have an Instagram account but will get one now, and follow MPI Built. Thanks for sharing 👍
Love the content Jacob . Learning a lot and seeing very skilled people you work with . Mitch's saw you used other day is like a 6 second car compared to a decent enough mid size car off a used lot . Little Blue is doing decent with the tweaks she got .
@Guilty of Treeson the extended cut of the ending of Mitch's video and the Chainsaw from CHY-naaaa ..LOL, HAHAHA, love the lick fingers, spread on HOT Burning nylon trick!! LOL I typically spit on the table and dip the burning end in the spit...ewww,,,,LOL. Seriously, the "mushroom" trick is what we do in the archery world when tying the ends on our rope loops for mechanical release aids....
I’ve got a Chinese knockoff too (🙄) and the cord frayed and broke off one inch from the handle. So that’s my chore of the morning. Thanks for the help!
Just replaced the pull cord on my ms290 before finding this video. I bought it used and the pull cord housing had enough built up gunk that the cord was loose and got frayed on the flywheel. I ended up jury rigging it with paracord and pulled everything apart to clean it and oil it. It took my three tries to get the cord tension set right.
Ok so the lighter on the rope thing I was doing. But the finding the end of the wind I was not doing. Damn. Thank you. Yes I have manually wrapped that thing with the spring out. No fun.
Yes, we use it all the time - this knot however isn't a true figure eight, but it is way better for this job. Found it on the internet, it is a double overhand stopper knot - now I know that, for the next few minutes.
Awesome vid, have always felt the same IE lube it then dry it, just like bicycle chains you need no dry-metal but cannot have 'loose oil/grease' or it becomes a grit sponge in short order and begins grinding as it lubricates :P MPI seems very very sharp am gonna have to go check him out now thanks!!
Damn, it is like watching me change a rope, even the same knots, and same use of lighter to melt the ends! And no, it isn't a true figure eight knot, this one is way better - I have used this knot for 35 years, I even began using it before Stihl started using it. About using somebody elses chainsaw, it like using somebody's toothbrush, you can do it, but you don't like it! ^_^
Great explanation on using someone else's saw! I love my ported saws, and my 661 is a rocket. Dropping down to a non ported 70cc class saw was a little painful.
Super video! You are a great teacher. Can you please explain, because I might have missed it, why did the knotted pull through the handle. Thank you again! 😊 One extra thought, I have an old 1984 Jonsered 520SP. How do you determine the diameter of the pull cord? It looks like nylon is the deal now. Mine was a cotton rope. The dealer installed nylon with a new Stihl pull handle. I never thought to measure the thickness of the old cord. That said, maybe there is a difference between the nylon size of cord you would use versus the cotton old-school pull cord that was in there. By the way my handle pulled off of the knotted cotton cord, maybe for the same reason your friends did? There was a washer beneath the old cotton knotted cord. Thank again! 😊
I know this sounds crazy Jake I've been cutting trees for almost 20 years I still never had to replace a pull cord I know it sounds crazy but this video has taught me I can do everything in tree work I can climb I can cut I can drop everything except for replaceable cord tell me that's not crazy LOL
It’s really hilarious that as soon as I read that Third Generation of machinery… I was saying what the heck does that mean…thinking… what are they trying to say here???? It’s really funny that keen minded folks are reading that tag and having my exact response. I don’t necessarily think that he was not necessary wanting to run it because it was a blue China saw… he was running a ported 661!!! He had a 90cc blaster to smack down his sticks for the day… not really stopping to laugh and have fun and play around with the blue saw and still get the work done if it’s an additional so what attitude… seemed like a blaster dude… knock it out as fast as you can and get gone dude type… he wouldn’t have run a real 460 that wasn’t ported either… why dick with a stocker 70cc when your hotrod 90 CC’s sitting right there and it’s running great… I think it was more about his being familiar with his own saw …more so then hating on the blue beast!!! You need 32:1 mix and to re-tune it after that run!!! You don’t have the super high quality nikasil cylinder lining in your Chinese engine that topend will last another 10-15 years if it’s running on 32:1… on 50:1 you’d burn it out in a couple three/four years running the way you were… I use the Chinese saw’s for residential tree removal and I freakin love the cheaper saw’s… I don’t understand not wanting to spend as little money as possible to complete the task… it’s reduced overhead!!! Their cheap parts will put them OEM saw’s that are broken back into the game too!!!
The knot is a figure 8 knot. The fisherman’s is sorta similar but its more like a hitch rather than a knot. The knot you tied, though, is definitely a figure 8
Nice explanation. But. I always like to have half a turn left on my spring. When the spring gets worn/slacked it's easy to put an extra wrap on. Just thought it was a little too tight. Just my two cents.
@@matthewggreen Yes I can but for speed and not making a mistake with a $300 sheet of material some " professionals" (all of them where I work) use them.
thats no figure 8 i have ever seen!!! jake you where right he just tied a double fishermanz i had to get the rope out to see what exactly transpired. well now we know that is fancy way to tie the fishermanzz, i have to remember it
Best chainsaw rope replacement demo ever! Detailed, clear, and concise. The tech is a real pro.
I have been replacing my own starter ropes for the last 45yrs by trial and error, Never to old to learn a new trick at 62 thanks to Jake and MPI.
Thanks for this. I started not to watch the whole thing, because like many....I felt it was a little basic, but there's more to it than I thought. Good info about the extra turn on the spring and how to check it.
I literally told myself I HAD to watch this because I imagined they would explain it perfectly and it’s something I’ve always had the question about
This dude rules! We all know that lighter is beat from doing massive bong rips behind that trailer.

Very well explained about wrapping the rope and the spring preload! Thank you

I've taken those out trying to reassemble them but had no luck. Now I know why. Thank you for posting
Thanks man for such an easy to understand video on how to properly replace the pulley cord, kudos to you guys 🤙
This guy is on point. I do the same thing he does. My ol man taught me that trick. He learned it from my grandad

Thank you guys, I fixed my 372 recoil just as the video ended....
Timing is everything
These tricks are so useful for all pull cord tools, tape measures, etc. Thank you!
Great tutorial. You two should make more.
I always use the side of the lighter to mushroom the ends. Good trick!
Very interesting video Jake. That man knows his saws!

When it comes to investing, nothing pays off more than educating yourself with the right information from the right source. That's how you get rich.
I have secured financial freedom by investing in bonds , equities , EFT's and crypto currency the most profiting of them all..
The economic hardship , recession , unemployment and the loss of job caused by covid pandemic is enough to push people into financial ventures .
I got 70% of my total portfolio in crypto and I have been making good profits.
I wanted to invest more in crypto, but the fluctuations in crypto value discouraged me into dumping.
Wow 😮I’m just shocked you mentioned and recommended Mr Dave Jevans , I thought people don’t know him..

figure 8 knots are also called stopper knots if you are sailing or on a boat
Yes, we use it all the time - this knot however isn't a true figure eight, but it is way better for this job. Found it on the internet, it is a double overhand stopper knot - now I know that, for the next few minutes.

That skiptooth chain is one of the reasons the saw is so slow. That engine is plenty strong to pull a full comp chain at that length.

The knot for the handle appears to be a double overhand stopper knot.
Sc1 silicone spray works well to keep a saw clean 👌

I run 50:1 in all my saws, all Chinese except for my Stihl 500i, 2 of my Chinese saws (Baumr-Ag) are still going strong at 10 years of age

WOW. There was more to this than I though. lol
Good stuff with a lil bit of trivia about the 661 haha

looks like a Double Overhand knot

definitely a fisherman knot. Figure 8 would be going through the end loop only.
Good stuff
Didn't know Ed sheerans bro did work on saws🤣... just kidding nice work👍
Mine is breaking cords alot too. Did u figure the cause.
You can tell a professional by the measuring tape they use, no dummy marks
Not true , need them for speed .

Dry lube is better on that spring
You don't need to take the plastic piece out of the pull start assembly to replace a pull cord, not in chainsaws atleast
