Doom was certainly an imposing team. I remember when they had Woman as their manager, when they first showed up. Great fun to watch in action.

DOOM was dope AF! They were the precursor to Harlem Heat and probably precursor to double-tough tag teams like APA.

I watched Butch come along in Mid South he should have been the first black NWA Champ not Ron. Ron was good but Reed was great.

Doom vs The horseman in the street fight was awesome . I always loved that match . I recorded every wrestling show I could find since i got a vcr in 87 and watched them all over and over again ! So I can say I watched this match a bunch ! I rarely ever watched TV . I would watch wrestling tapes over and over even if some were the shitz !
Doom was one of my favorites. I always felt they did them (and Muta) dirty in Starcade 1989 where they lost all of their Iron Team matches.
Muta was on the way out so he had to be cooled

I dont remember repeats of old wcw on uk tv in the early 2000? Channel 5 used to show some current wcw show.
Itv used to show wcw worldwide in the early 90s.
Sky sports showed old 1990-92 episodes of wcw worldwide in 2002.
The time I spent around Butch is so memorable....such a nice guy but don't push his buttons cuz shitz gonna happen! 💯 He always treated me like gold. What a talent! RIP 🙏 🙏

This isn't THAT surprising to me. But the only thing at Gnawed at me was ,The WCW version of The Freebirds were already Long in the Tooth as it were and they were trying to reboot themselves with this late 80's glam metal (Think Steel Panther with over 40 looking guys with Beer Gut)gimmick it was kinda SAD

Met Butch in 80s in monroe at a ramada. He turned me down for an autograph. Meanest cuss😊👍🏾 never forgot it always was a Mark for him one of my all time favorites.
Looking back, it's clear they wanted the Freebirds to be transitional champs to put the titles back on the Steiners and start the Doom split
The Freebirds were in WCW for a few years at that point, at least the Hayes and Garvin version. They definitely were an odd choice for Doom to drop the titles to.

Growing up in the northeast I remember when we got cable and I saw WCW on TBS for the first time. I was immediately obsessed with Sid Vicious and DOOM. Those 3 guys looked scary as hell. WWE didn’t have shit compared to those guys.
This was Hayes' and Garvin's second reign. Both times they dropped it to the Steiners.

Doom was an awesome tag team; they don't get the respect they deserve!
His timeline is off. The free birds first showed up around 89 and the free birds won the tournament for the tag team titles. They had been there a few years when they won the belts again in 91
They could have gotten the Freebirds over by having them giving Doom all they could handle before losing to the champs after a hard fought, fairly even match. That is how you give a new team some credibility without having your already over heel team lose the titles..
Having that kind of attitude will definitely keep you from having along run with a title.

When i was a kid i always thought doom were some kinda muerdeous men and teddy was like master shredder. Teddy has great stories love the man.
That version of the Freebirds (Hayes and Garvin) had been teaming up in the NWA/WCW since July 1989 before Doom even debuted. Teddy's timeline is a bit off, the Freebirds had not just came in from World Class
I think the Freebirds were chosen as a compromise team because losing to the Horsemen or Steiners would have made Doom look weaker than either. Freebirds could look like a cheating fluke and preserve Doom’s reputation….
I never understood this decision either. It wasn't to push the Freebirds who had already lost the titles at a tv taping to the Steiners days before they actually won them.

He and Butch had known each other for 10yrs and main evented multiple territories. One dust up didn't make them enemies. I've never seen Flair talk like they were friends just that he enjoyed working Butch and respected him.

@@metallicbigtoe3949 They already held the World titles with Garvin as a triple like the old freebirds before Gordy left to Japan and worked a program agaisnt the steiners SST and Midnight express as Hayes and Garvin before Doom were even formed with woman .The freebirds rebrand came about 12-18 months later Sir Oliver Humperdink (big daddy dink the road boss) DDP as the manager and brad Armstrong masked as the charachter "badstreet" who they held the world 6 man title with.
The title run in 89-90 period shook up the division ,but given in 90-92 teams like Steiners RoadWarriors SkyScrapers Doom Rock & Roll Express Midnight Express NWA/WCW were rich enough in tag team talent to have better champions than the Birds ,and thats before you add the likes of Lex and Sting and Arn and Ric teaming together
