  • Sippie Wallace was a blues pioneer who began recording in the 1920'a. I met her in Detroit when she was 82, still singing in nightclubs on Saturday night and playing the organ and directing the church choir on Sunday morning. She was a little difficult to understand when she talked, but her message came through loud and clear when she sang. I did this story about Sippie for the Today Show in 1980. She sang such classics as "Up the Country Blues", "Woman Be Wise", and "I'm A Mighty Tight Woman".

I feel the amazing part of these folky blues jazz trailblazers was that they were so authentic that they were more than just musicians or artists they just were...no pretensions

Thanks for posting this, Boyd. I'm a big fan of early blues and especially female singers of the 1920s. It's a really well-written piece and the editing is stellar. I work in the industry; one doesn't find that standard any more.
