Two new recently published, peer-reviewed scientific papers show that real warp drive designs based on real physics may be possible. They are realistic and physical, which had not been the case in the past. In a paper published in 1994, Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre showed theoretically that an FTL warp drive could work within the laws of physics. But it would require huge amounts of negative mass or energy. Such a thing is not known to exist.

In a recent paper published by Applied Physics, authors Alexey Bobrick and Gianni Martire, outline how a physically feasible warp drive could in principle, work, without the need for negative energy. I spoke to them. They had technical input on this video.
What Alcubierre did in his paper is figure out a shape that he believed spacetime needed to have in order for a ship to travel faster than light. Then he solved Einstein's equation for general relativity to determine the matter and energy he would need to generate the desired curvature. It could only work with negative energy. This is mathematically consistent, but meaningless because negative mass is not known to exist. Negative mass is not the same as anti-matter. Antimatter has positive energy and mass.
Even if you could create the Alcubierre curvature, you still need to accelerate the ship to speed of light and beyond. But to go beyond C, you have to have superluminal matter, or infinite energy. This is not possible.
What Bobrick and Martire figured out is that there is more than one type of warp drive. We can get to Proxima Centauri in 10 months without going faster than light, by dilating time inside the ship. If a spaceship is constructed of a massive super dense material, close to the mass density of a neutron star, then any individuals inside this ship would experience significant time dilation. Passengers on such a ship could go to Proxima Centauri in about 9 earth years traveling at half the speed of light, but only about 10 months would have passed from their perspective. But a huge amount of mass would still be needed, on the order of about the mass of Jupiter or larger.
And you would still need some kind of momentum exchange, similar to a rocket to accelerate this ship. Accelerating such a massive ship to half the speed of light would require the energy equivalent of 13% of its mass. Fusion technology or accretion disk energy could be used.
In a 2021 paper by physicist Erik Lentz of Gottingen University, he shows that unlike the solution by Alcubierre, which required unphysical negative energy, no negative energy is required to create certain shapes of warp bubble that could travel at any speed. The soliton he calculated looks nothing like the Alcubierre soliton, but it requires no negative energy. And it could theoretically travel at any speed, including traveling faster than the speed of light. Lentz does not think that the speed of light is necessarily unbreakable for his soliton. But in any case, it would require quite a lot of mass, at least an amount equal to 1/10th that of the sun.
Many other challenges would remain, but the point being made in these papers is important because it shows that interstellar trips are theoretically and physically feasible.
    #warpdrives
    #alcubierre
    #bobrickandmartire
More research can reveal optimizations on how to make the drive more efficient. We can start creating tiny warp drives in a lab, and look for microscopic warp effects as a proof of concept. A lot of work also needs to be done in material science and in constructing and developing new efficient propulsion systems. But if it is possible, then humans will undoubtedly figure out a way to do it. It is just a matter of time.

If you believe technological progress will continue into at least the near future, then you have to back our eventually solving the issues of interstellar, and probably also intergalactic, travel. If massive objects truly can't ever travel superlumenally then some new physics will achieve the goal by a different means. "Accelerating anything with mass to the speed of light, let alone beyond, requires an infinite amount of energy. This would be true for any warp engine design and is a physical impossibility that cannot be achieved."
But that's not true. Were this true, the entire point of having a warp drive would be lost. The point of warping the space-time continuum to begin with is so as to achieve relativistic "superluminal" speeds WITHOUT having to attempt doing so in normal space for the very reason you state: nothing with mass can attain, much less surpass, light speed.
Warping the space-time continuum permits us to create a "shortcut" through space by decreasing time and space (distance) via the warp... such that the ship, itself, relativistically travels faster than light without ever actually attaining anywhere near light speed in normal space... thus, sidestepping the whole nothing-with-mass-can-attain-light-speed dilemma. That's the entire point to the warp drive in the first place!

Many interesting points and take aways to think about and I agree that the most interesting is that on paper at least for now and the foreseeable future we know that it is at least possible. Possibility is the only nessesity required for humanity to be able to set a goal to strive for and then hopefully eventually reach than exceed it.
We had to walk before we drove we had to drive before we flew we had to fly before we left our world.
What will the next step in humanity's progression to interplanetary travel be ?

If we could travel with the speed of light or at least very very close (without warp drive) then the travel to proxima centauri wouldn't take 4.2 years. From the perspective of the people inside the ship it would take no time nor distance because of lenght contraction and time dialation, as both are infinite at the speed of light.

      Space is a dual concept!
Space is dual to time -- Einstein.
Time dilation is dual to length contraction -- Einstein, special relativity.
Length , distance, space or depth is produced by the stereographic image created in your mind by the two dual images from your eyes -- hologram in the brain. Depth or the 3rd dimension is a by-product of duality (two eyes) -- holograms or two interference patterns produce depth, or distance. In physics the vector cross product between the x any y dimensions creates the z dimension or third dimension!
Distance, length, space or depth is defined by two dual points -- space duality.
Points are dual to lines -- the principle of duality in geometry.
Up is dual to down, left is dual to right, in is dual to out -- space duality.
Space duality is dual to time duality.

I think if we are going for making time pass faster for the people on the ship rather than actually getting there faster, the best solution would be advancing medical technology to the point of being able to cryogenically freeze somebody, then wake them up 100 years later with them not knowing that much time has passed at all. This would eliminate the need for a lot of mass, a lot of energy (other than the already enormous about of energy to accelerate any object to nearly the speed of light and then back down to a slow speed), and a solution to keeping alive the people on this ship which is dense enough to vaporize them into the floor just by being inside it.
Another alternative would be actually turning people into light, shooting them to a receiver in the location they are going to, and then reconstructing them there. Obviously that requires already being in that location to build such a receiver, but shooting a bunch of light over a long distance is much more efficient than an entire ship, energy-wise.
The other issue with that is figuring out how you safely turn somebody into a beam of light without dissolving their conscience, and that could only really be known if we could figure out what "conscience" is in the first place, and how they remain continuous from birth to death (or potentially, how they do not).

Yes, they are trying to get the energy of the vacuum (zero point energy). This energy arises because the uncertainty principle puts a limit on the scale at which something can be called a "vacuum" (because virtual particles blah blah blah). But this isn't negative energy.
First, we have recall that mass and energy are the same thing, call it mass-energy. Negative mass would be mass whose weight was a negative number, say, something that weighed less than zero, like --42 pounds. Negative energy would be what you got if you converted that to energy.
The article was interesting, thanks. If we could get the energy of the vacuum, it would be a great way to get limitless energy for a spacecraft.

You got my hopes up, only to be let down. What we need is superluminal travel without the time dilation.
What's the point of going somewhere quickly when by the time you get back no one you know will be there? Time dilation is like having a fast-forward button for the universe. You make everything else act more quickly than you do. In the "Death Star" example, people on earth would still live for that 9 year span so even if you went to AC and came right back, that's 18 years on Earth. Anyone who took that trip who had a child the day they left would come back to a grown adult. Yet for the traveller, only 20 months have passed so they're not much older. This has been explored before, most notably in Interstellar.
This technology would be great for initial or early stages colonization of extrasolar areas, as those people would inherently know they are on a one-way mission (much like colonists were when exploring the New World), but you must also think of how that ship will communicate with Earth. Due to such dilation, no direct communication can happen as we see with Star Trek and other related sci-fi.
So, what's the point if we can't yet take a 3 week vacation to the nearest star systems and be back in time for work on Monday? Don't get me wrong, I think that the progress that has been made in showing that positive matter warp bubbles is possible is a phenominal step in the right direction. It's just not going to excite me until the tech is comercially adaptable. In the same way that SpaceX and others are making spaceflight more affordable, I know that eventually, however we figure it out, we will be able to get the cost down so that even low-income people can use the service. When we have the science to do that, the tech will follow, and then you can call me.
