    The key is having a cool, patient instructor like Josh and flying somewhere you like and feel comfortable. I actually quit because my instructor was a grumpy, crusty old man and the flying club and field I joined everybody acted bossy and bickered.
    I'm starting over after 5 years and hopefully this time will be fun. Thanks for such great info in this series.

    I'm brand new to RC planes and your videos have been very helpful! Thanks. I do a lot of motorsports and the phrase "When in doubt, throttle out." means the exact opposite of the way you seem to use it. We use it to mean give it throttle and ride out of the problem.

    The technique of turning to find your orientation can not be under emphasized. You will lose orientation eventually. Also, another tip for turning the plane when it is flying towards you is simply turn your body, or just turn your radio, to face away from the plane. Now it is flying away from you, but behind you and use your normal stick movements.

      Not a good idea IMHO as it develops into a bad habit and prevents learning the correct method. OK in an emergency to save the plane though.

    No one ever mentions a really easy trick to level the wings when the plane is coming towards you! Simply push the right stick in the direction of the low wing! It's really simple and saves lots of planes. Vote this up!
    Edit: I jumped the gun a bit, but this should be emphasized more as I see this all the time in newbie flyers and it solved their problems almost immediately.

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle 10 років тому +1

      FT does cover that wing leveling trick at 4:30. The way I learned was by using my imagination and pretending I was inside the cockpit at all times. Another way is to turn your back to the incoming plane while looking over your shoulder at it. I do this sometimes even today when flying helis.

    I went for my first flight in my aeroscout mini yesterday and I realised mid flight if I pitched up too steep the engine cuts out, which was a problem because the reason I pitched up was to avoid a tree, but then I lost power so it stalled and hit the tree instead, most stressful 30 seconds ever.
    I eventually got it down with the help of a random guy and his 2nd grade son who was very good at climbing trees lmao

    Great video guys, helps a lot. Question I have is, I just got a Champ RTF last week to learn. After a few flights and advice on how to trim from other pilot's it was good. The only thing I don't understand is when I'm flying away or towards me (on 2nd fuselage) it suddenly nose dive drastically and busted motor mount. What causes a plane this light to have that drastic of a dive, wind conditions were perfect, battery had full charge. Thanks for the help.

      that would be a great point of view but it would greatly unbalance the plane, it would take quite a big plane to be able to do that without critically unbalancing it or to be able to put counter weight in front and not over weighting the plane

    Perhaps the correct thing to say would be that the control surfaces appear more sensitive flying into wind but in fact they are as sensitive flying with the wind, non the less control inputs into wind do appear to have a more imeadiate and direct effect to the novice flyer !

  • @davidheal4623
    @davidheal4623 7 років тому

    Very nice video series. I must comment however that flying into the wind or downwind has no impact on the sensitivity of the controls. The aircraft is flying in the moving body of air and doesn't know (and doesn't care) which way the body of air is moving over the ground. The RC pilot may perceive a change in the aircraft's flight responses because the RC pilot's position is fixed on the ground. The aircraft however happily continues to fly with solely respect to the moving air mass.

    Once me and my buddy were flying our planes, they were 1/2a models with no throttle control. I landed and his plane was way out there. He thought he was flying in but he was actually flying away! The plane was a tiny dot and my eyes were better than his so he gave me the radio. I turned and got the orientation and then got it pointed towards us, just barely could tell. I just kept the plane pointed at us and it finally got back to us. That plane must have been half a mile away, maybe even further. Don't let this happen to you!

    Just out of curiousity, what would be the reasoning behind only practicing stalls while flying INTO the wind?

    • @ThanhPham96
      @ThanhPham96 10 років тому +1

      My guess would be so the plane fly slower and it make it easier to recover from the stall ( air flowing over the wing as soon as you stop pulling and increase power )

    • @waynerussell6401
      @waynerussell6401 10 років тому

      Thanh Pham
      The airspeed is the same irrespective of flight direction! Wind only affects ground speed.See glassdogangle's later correct analysis.
      FT are not known for their aerodyamics knowledge (as witness their earlier non-current theory of flight). Suggest some editorial control from an experienced thinking modeller before posting videos guys.

    • @ipariszalonna
      @ipariszalonna 10 років тому

      Wayne Russell Lower ground speed is exactly why you would want to practice stalls into the wind. If you can't recover you don't want to go fast relative to the ground.

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle 10 років тому

      ipariszalonna That is a much better reason than the ones I have been hearing. The key is that flying into the wind only affects groundspeed. It has no bearing on airspeed, or control sensitivity, or any of the other nonsense.

    Good video but if you've never flown R/C before, get some instruction on a buddy box, or if you can't get help, practice on a flight simulator until you can control the model safely. (I bet you crash it on the sim first time!!) These guys make it look easy as they know what they're doing and even trainers will punish you when you get mixed up with your lefts and rights or if the model starts to drift away (because it will on your first attempts even in calm conditions). Crashing your model on its first flight will put you off the hobby for life.

    • @georgebishop1071
      @georgebishop1071 8 років тому

      Left: rudder left or airleon stick left then elevator stick down, turning right is the opposite but you still put the elevator stick down, and of course, when it's coming towards you its all opposite e.g turning left with the rudder is pushing the rudder stick right etc, but remember elevator stick down doesn't change when turning with the airleons.

    Control surface sensitivity has nothing to do with the wind direction.

    I don't have a lot of money to spend on rc aircraft. I don't have anything that you need to fly. What is the best cheap setup that I can use to get into the hobby.

    why is it that when I give full throttle on my trainer from hobbyking I fly up ? Cg is good

    • @eliasrenner555
      @eliasrenner555 10 років тому

      That's pretty normal. If your plane flies faster it gets more lift so it flies up. If you fly full throttle most of the time trim the elevator down so it flies straight with full throttle.

  • @someflipswhoguy
    @someflipswhoguy 9 років тому

    do you have to have full throttle to fly?

    • @samiam619
      @samiam619 9 років тому +2

      No. Full throttle is for take off. Get her up and back off the throttle to half, the battery lasts longer (longer flight) and if you are at full you get into trouble faster.
