4 Month Update: The mat is still slippery. It is less slippery than when I first purchased it, but it is still not perfect.

You can use a degreaser to break down the chemical that causes it to slip. I used dawn soap and a degreaser like Folex and it worked like a charm. Make sure to clean REALLY WELL with water afterwards.

Great review! I had the same experience with my first mat when I got it. The salt method didn't help much either and I did it twice. I will say after a few weeks of daily yoga on the mat it did become really grippy. It's now my favorite mat by far. I've had it for over five years and it looks as good as new (performs better than new since it's not a slip and slide anymore lol). I don't have any tips for breaking it in faster but if you decide to keep it I can say that it gets much better with time:)
Edited to add: I have the Pro Mat but I think it is pretty much the same as the ProLite mat in regards to the breaking in process, just thicker.

@@AMELIAANN Maybe you have to really make the sea salt burn in the sun more and directly instead of inside the cooler temperature house. And from other videos they put a lot of it. Hope that helps. Just FYI I live in a hot humid area. So maybe that’s why it broke in faster.

It is the best mat ever, but it will need more than the salt method done a few times. I've had the pro lite and the pro. Practicing on it (aka having you sweating on it) is the best method. And to endure that first few weeks, use a yoga towel.. and then clean it with water and dish soap afterwards.

The salt and sun is for moisture absorption during storing . Or may be might be a kosher certification .

Hi. I am not sure if someone already mentioned but Manduka says due to their closed-cell technology it is a bit slippery so they suggest using their towels for people who tend to sweat. Regarding salt, I am not sure if this is the reason, but in many cultures, salt and water is used to clean old stuff (second-hand, inherited, etc.) from bad energy. Even new things can be cleaned as people when producing something are passing their energy to what they are making. Considering that we use a yoga mat for doing yoga, and it is also a spiritual practice not only physical, I can imagine that cleaning it with salt, and letting stand it in the sun does maybe the same thing. Maybe Im wrong :)

Have the same exact mat (even in color) and I immediately noticed it repels water. So when you sweat you also start to slip. I prepare a towel just for this very reason. A quick wipe usually makes the mat grippy again. For more intense classes when I know I’ll be sweating a lot (ashtanga) I put a cotton cloth on top.
I also have a lululemon and it’s extremely grippy even when you’re dripping buckets. It’s actually the mat I use most often and just use the manduka when the other mat is drying.

But surely shouldn't need to a rub salt into a $80-$120 yoga mat in the 1st place and secondly feel the need to use a towel to stop slipping on a $80-$120 yoga mat
