Its worth noting that Master Hand is technically from Kirby originally. The sprite of the hand that wakes Kirby up on the game over screens of the first few games is referred to as "Master Hand" internally. Same goes for the models of it in the more recent games like Return To Dreamland.
13:50 here’s something else cool about this! In Super Star Ultra, which still has this bossfight, the classic Mac OS inspired UI is changed to appear similar to the UI of older Mac OS X releases!
I haven't watched the video all the way through, so someone smack me if Silvery says this further on, but... Yo-Yo is also a huge EarthBound reference, before ESP was even a thing! Not only is Kirby wearing his Ness-like cap again and using a yo-yo as a weapon, but Yo-Yo's UI icon uses the same background as EarthBound's "Your Name, Please" section. This is a topic that deserves its own video, really, but the Kirby and MOTHER series are actually considered sister series! They share a great deal of development history and the series reference each other on the regular. Kirby was even the cursor icon in EB's debug mode!
Also, Haley the blue hedgehog enemy from Amazing Mirror is a REALLY interesting case! Their name in Japanese is "Hari" from the word "harinezumi" - hedgehog. The fact that they're blue and move at high speeds means that the obvious Sonic reference was probably intended from the start, but the translators either missed this original meaning or made a super clever localisation choice and picked "Haley" instead. We might never know, but it's a fun one to examine!
@@TornaitSuperBird It's not. Haley's name in Japanese is ハリー, which is transliterated as Harī (with an extended "i", I was too lazy to grab the macron in my original comment). Foreign words are written phonetically in Japanese, which means that "Haley" is written ヘイリ - or "Heiri" in English letters. This is all moot anyway, because Halley's Comet actually already has an official spelling in Japanese, and it's ハレー: "Harē". So it's clear from this, and the fact that Haley's names in other languages reference it being spiky, that the Halley's Comet reference was something that the localisers chose to do. That's why I said it was clever - all the groundwork was already there, and anyone who doesn't speak Japanese wouldn't know the actual joke behind the name.
@@TornaitSuperBird No worries! This is why localisation is such a cool and important part of gamedev. Haley here is a particularly interesting case where multiple ideas intersected perfectly.
Some other references I know. 1. There is a rock of Master Hand holding a coin with the Smash logo in Robobot. 2. Meta Knight’s Shuttle Loop originally came from Smash Bros along with his old (and much better) final smash Galaxia Darkness in Robobot. King Dedede also throws Gordos in his boss fights since Parallel Dedede in Star Allies which originally came from Smash. 3. Void Termina is just Sachiel come on man.
@@jeannepixel4692 I don’t really see it. 1. Void Termina’s Japanese name is “Ende Niru” which from what I know isn’t a reference to anything in Majora’s Mask. 2. One thing can have multiple references.
@@Magic_Ice never said it couldn't be a reference to multiple things, just that it's also a Majora's Mask reference. It's mask (while heart shaped) is also the same shape as Majora's Mask. Termina is also the name as the kingdom that Majora's Mask takes place in.
Kirby Mass Attack goes unbelievably hard with references it's kinda insane. There's the stuff you already mentioned on top of the plethora of references from the anime as well as having tons of enemies from other games, moreso than any other kirby game. For a series that prides itself on referencing its past, Mass Attack truly goes above and beyond (Yes this was just an excuse for me to talk about my favorite kirby game, why do you ask?)
TBH, I was waiting for a reference to the Kirby anime in the video, but I'm guessing that Kirby references in Kirby weren't taken as much into consideration?
About Samus appearing in Kirby's Dreamland 3, in Super Smash Bros Melee's Adventure Mode, after clearing Brinstar and escaping from it before the planet self-destructs, the players immediate escape plan is to head to Planet Popstar, as shown in a cutscene. So I guess it's plausible that Brinstar and Popstar are close enough that Samus may be able stop by on a somewhat regular basis, and that she and Kirby have proabably crossed paths on their intergalactic travels multiple times outside of Smash. Also, can we just talk about how many references to Smash there are in Kirby and vice versa? Between everything mentioned here, a bunch of Kirby themes being remixed for certain modes in Melee, the overall mechanics and controls of Smash and 2D Kirby, Kirby equipping the Ness hat whenever he uses one of the latter's moves (Yo-Yo, EPS, Baseball Bat, etc), even some Subspace and WoL boss attack patterns, it's insane how much overlap there is between the two series. Like sure, they were both created by the same guy and company, but the sheer amount of people who still boldly state that Smash is a Mario game more than anything to this day is astounding.
Y'know, I'm honestly surprised that Goriath from Return To Dream Land was never brought up here, since... well, c'mon, the guy's boss fight is loaded with Dragon Ball references. Still, this video serves as a fairly decent guide to the many references found within the Kirby series. Excellent work as always! Oh, and between you and me... I may have anonymously contributed a thing or two to the page on WiKirby listing the many references within the Kirby series, including some bits that made it into the video...
@@Brick_Eater_ Really now? Huh. I've never really made that connection until now, in all honesty. This could just be passed off as a mere coincidence, but the Kirby series is no stranger to including possible references to anime, sooooo... yeah. Perhaps Goriath DID take a bite of Gum Gum on top of being a Saiyan warrior...
I think with Fighter, all of the elements that it shares with Ryu are not entirely specific to him but them all being together makes me 100% sure it's supposed to be a reference to him
Woah, I didn't know many of these, the references to Trax, Goku and ESPECIALLY Pompeii and Eva caught me off guard. Great video, thanks for blessing us with so much Kirby knowledge.
Awesome vid! Another reference is the jet ability enemy, Capsule J from superstar being a clear reference to TwinBee. Maybe Konami didn't like that, as it was removed and replaced with Capsule J2 in superstar ultra
I know you know from the footage used but Blocky is also derived from the Adventures of Lolo. He even appears with them in the Brawlball sub-game in Mass Attack.
Wow, I loved this video! References pages on wikis are always some of my favourites, my only issue with them is they often only describe stuff in text form without showing it. And this video showed EVERYTHING, both in game and what it was being compared to! This is exactly what I always wanted, thank you so much! I'm glad other people out there like this stuff so much ^^ I really appreciate all the work you put in to collecting all of this footage, you're the best! Also I think the blue text boxes in the Computer Virus fight are a nod to final fantasy specifically!
Speaking of Fighter Kirby, I don't know if you mention this but Goriath seems to be a clear cut reference to Dragon Ball. Also if you use Smash's Stone transformation in Planet Robobot, there's a small chance he'll turn into a statue of both Master and Crazy Hand clutching the Smash Bros logo
Zero 2 is also possibly a reference to a fallen angel. It has a very angelic feel to it, but it cries blood and the rings around it's background look close enough to the rings you see around biblically accurate angels but corrupted and turned dark.
Awesome video, and there is an actual Eva reference that made it into the final games believe it or not. The spider enemy from Kirby’s dreamland 3/Kirby 64 is named Mariel, a very likely reference to the spider angel from eva named Matarael.
One big one you forgot is when Kirby does his victory dance, one of his signature moves is Michael Jackson's moonwalk, complete with the hat tilt and everything
From what i understand Lololo nd Lalala attack Kirby because they have been bewitched or mind controlled, something like that, and Kirby merely brings them back to their senses. You can see this in super star where after beating them they help Kirby out
You missed one Mario reference: The credits for Milky Way Wishes mostly have Kirby in various costumes and poses next to the jobs each person had, such as being an artist for the designers. But next to Executive Producer Hiroshi Yamauchi, There's Mario behind a Nintendo logo.
This was a very clean, comprehensive coverage of these references! Good stuff! Just please stop asking me to like and subscribe so much within the first few minutes
I think there's one more cut reference to Evangelion in the beta of Kirby 64: the Dark Pyramid in Rock Star, that rises from the ground and reveals itself to be a icosahedron, was originally light blue in color, and it was believed to be a reference to Ramiel.
Retired Kirby Fandom admin here: Awesome video, I’m glad we could help! Heck, even I learned a few things from it. It’s also appreciated that you cited Kirby Wiki as a reference; I’ve seen videos that quoted things I wrote on there verbatim without citing their source. So this was refreshing. I recently learned that the tank in Trax isn’t named Trax; the English manual calls him-get ready for this-Tank. I haven’t read the Japanese manual, though, so that could be his name in Japanese for all I know. Keep up the great work! =]
I’m pretty sure the idea people get with 02 being an EVA reference is that he has a few design similarities to Sahaquiel. Both a giant angelic creature with a single large eye with a pair of vertically oriented wings on the sides of their body. Still bit of a theory, but I’d definitely buy it being an inspiration if they were willing to reference EVA elsewhere.
The giant robot drill arm would more likely be a Getter Robo reference if anything, as its both the more recognizable genre defining giant robot series, and what TTGL was referencing anyway. And even though it isnt directly anchored to some linked term or name, a reference to that same era of anime/manga 1970s classics is that the original Dark Matter, (and so many many other nigh identical anime/manga and videogame bosses) is cery likely an homage to GeGeGe no Kitaro's super iconic big boss, Backbeard/Buckbeard. Other than being referenced in a lot of other properties, it also inspired multiple generations of creators to make similar giant, looming, black, monoeye, primordial evil, orb bosses.
13:13 Actually the reference to Kiki with keke may be a lot deeper, due to another snes game that came out that Hal worked a bit on: earthbound, and the main person behind earthbound: Shigasato itoi, was a scriptwriter for Kiki’s delivery service.
This might or might not be a stretch, but Dark Mind's True Form could be a reference to Sauron in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings adaptation, I only say maybe since eyes are a common foe in the series and it could be coincidental
You missed the Rocky reference. One of the many bosses in Kirby's Dreamland 2 and Kirby's Dreamland 3 is Rocky which is that big block with eyeballs a smile and feet and when you defeat him after you inhale him you'll copy the stone ability. Rocky is completely identical to a big block that walks around in the adventures of Lolo games that try to track you
17:03 maybe the first score there could also reference the Gundam gp01 zephyranthes i mean we got two Gundams named zephyr so it could go either way but still all 4 four (minus the gp00 blossom) gundam gp 1-4 got referenced in a Kirby game of all places
In Amazing Mirror, some of Fighter Kirby's moves can be cancelled into others. He also does something similar to a Power Dunk if you press B multiple times.
Loved the video! Nice to see some obscure Kirby Easter eggs being brought to shine in their glory! And it may be for the best or worst that you didn't mention a certain "Easter egg" to the human female body in Kirby's dreamland 2.
This likely a coincidence, but i have noticed that part of Miracle Matters and 02s themes sound very similar to the credits theme of Cozzilla, a really strange italian edit of ''Godzilla, King of the Monsters!'' that, among other things, added actual war footage to pad the film out.
Now I know it isnt a kirby game but in the Darkon boss In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he uses an attack from the 2nd phase of magolor boss where he goes through a portal, spinning and doing damage when in contact.
18:03 I think this is pretty clearly a reference to Majora's mask, as it does take place in the land of Termina, and the visual similarities to the mask are also very clear.
Oh yeah also the Cutter ability hat are based on Akira Toriyama's many work including Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball; Also based on 'Eye Slugger' a weapon from Ultraman series Ultraseven
I'm not sure if you read comments from your older videos but at 17:09 when you were talking about the references in the revenge of meta knight I'm a bit disappointed how you didn't mention that the song was a not so subtle reference to The House of the Rising Sun
15:18 the koopa shell may be from the original mario, but that icon and all looks more like the icon of the bros. attack of the same name from the Mario and Luigi series (which in this case would be Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga)
Tf do you mean fighting kirby's force blast was original to kirby returns to dreamland? (Also, stop avoiding the fact that squeak squad is a kirby game.)
Kind of surprised you didn‘t mention that Yo-Yo is also a Mother reference. The icon in Super Star even has the same background as Earthbound‘s File select Also the Mages that give Kirby the Mirror ability look a lot like the Black Mage from Final Fantasy
There are a few more references to Smash in the Kirby series. In Meta Knightmare Returns, a Subgame in Planet Robobot, Meta Knight could use Dimensional Cape. His Final Smash in SSBB and SSB4. And from RTDL onward, every time he's been playable (aside from KBR), he's been able to perform Shuttle Loop. His recovery in Smash. And from Star Allies onward, Dedede has used Gordo Throw (his Side Special in SSB4 and SSBU) in every one of his bossfights. And in KPR, if you use Smash Kirby's Stone move, there's a chance he'll transform into a golden statue of Master Hand clutching the Smash Logo. Oh, and speaking of Master Hand, the little hand that always appears in Kirby's game overs have been called "Master Hand" in the game files ever since RTDL.
In addition to the Hyper Zone shared namesake, there’s a planet in the game Hyper Zone known as Ripple Field that shares its name with Ripple Field in one of the Kirby games.😊
There's also a Hyper Zone level called Grass Land, which we miss because it's such a generic name, but of course Grass Land is also the first of the five worlds in _Dream Land 3._
Meta Knight's Classic Mode should've been fighters that have been referenced in the Kirby series, referencing the retread stuff in Meta Knightmare modes. 1: Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Wario in the Boxing Ring, referencing Spring Breeze. 2: Samus and R.O.B. in... Battlefield? Referencing their appearance in Dream Land 3. 3: Captain Falcon and Donkey Kong in the Great Cave Offensive 4: Ness in Dream Land, referencing how Ness is unlocked in SSB64 5: Marth and Roy in the Fountain of Dreams, referencing their association with the stage back in Melee. 6: Link(green cap) and Ryu in the Colosseum, referencing the Copy Ability references. Boss: Master Hand and Crazy Hand on the Halberd, referencing Amazing Mirror. Dedede's Classic Mode would be fighting villains in unfitting stages, referencing Dedede's redemption and how this king is oddly associated with Boxing Ring. 1: Dark Meta Knight on Final Destination, referencing Dedede Tour. 2: Bowser on Rainbow Cruise. 3: Ganondorf in Great Bay. 4: Ridley and Wario in Jungle Japes, with Donkey Kong as an ally. 5: King K.Rool in the Boxing Ring. 6: Monochrome Dedede in the Boxing Ring. Boss: Marx, who claimed to be redeemed in Star Allies.
Fighter being Ryu is also a bit deeper: the mechanic of how weak and strong attacks work is kind of based on steet fighter 1 where how strongly you pushed the button determined its power. The mechanics of the fighter ability were then incorporated into this same way in Ryu's actual movepool in Smash Also the original capsule j was too much twinbee that had to be taken out. Konami probably didn't sue but maybe actually told them not to do that.
I'd just like to say Fighter and Staff are definitely references. In some games fighter also has access to the Shoryuken and the Tatsumaki senpukyaku. As well as a headband similar to Ryu's. And Staff Kirby's staff being red with gold caps which is a common depiction of Wukong's Ruyi Jingu Bang. then there's the fact that it extends, which is also something that originated with the Ruyi Jingu Bang.
Just a small correction, while I'm not sure it's called Force Blast in it, Fighter has the same 3 level charging projectile in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (no command input at this point though) which was made by HAL
Additional: Sillydillo in Kirby and the Forgotten Land has similar movesets to Ganesha in Honkai Impact 3rd but differs within cages and its homemade partner.
The _Yuyuki_ cameos in _Dream Land 2_ and _3_ seem a lot bigger than the other _Dream Land 3_ cameos. I assumed there had to be overlapping staff, but cross-checking the staff members listed on the respective Wikipedia pages, none of the staff of _Yuyuki_ worked on DL2 or DL3, except Miyamoto as producer. Wonder why they were so fond of it?
getting jumpscared with boxboy music, a boxboy mention, and being told to go play boxboy + boxgirl right after (spoilers) my wife died in a tale for one is not something i expected to happen today
it's not ambiguous. there are a lot of actual straight up anime references in kirby. Lot of Evangelion references in enemies and concepts (and the beta version of Double Needle in 64) and Goriath was just goku

Fighter's Rising Break could also be a reference to Shoryuken.
I literally said "it's a trick question, it's not gonna be Star Wars" out loud when you brought up the Lightsaber from Kirby 64.
Oh yeah also the Cutter ability hat are based on Akira Toriyama's many work including Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball; Also based on 'Eye Slugger' a weapon from Ultraman series Ultraseven
ITS FINALLY HERE!
The icon in Super Star even has the same background as Earthbound‘s File select
Also the Mages that give Kirby the Mirror ability look a lot like the Black Mage from Final Fantasy
We need more Kirby Fans like you in the world ❤
There are a few more references to Smash in the Kirby series.
Really? That's crazy!
There's also a Hyper Zone level called Grass Land, which we miss because it's such a generic name, but of course Grass Land is also the first of the five worlds in _Dream Land 3._
3:51 bro, the gorilla turns into a supersayian, why are you not talking abt that
And you could fit the mr Saturn to characters who appeared in Kirby.
2:24 bro, the charged hammer flip goes all the way back to Super Star/Fun Pak
Great video! I really enjoyed it and I look forward to further videos! I liked and subscribed
What bout the old jet enemy and buddie on the original superstar, that's literally from another game
3: Captain Falcon and Donkey Kong in the Great Cave Offensive
4: Ness in Dream Land, referencing how Ness is unlocked in SSB64
5: Marth and Roy in the Fountain of Dreams, referencing their association with the stage back in Melee.
The mechanics of the fighter ability were then incorporated into this same way in Ryu's actual movepool in Smash
Also the original capsule j was too much twinbee that had to be taken out. Konami probably didn't sue but maybe actually told them not to do that.
8:01 does.... does this mean we can get Goku in smash?
I'd just like to say Fighter and Staff are definitely references.
In some games fighter also has access to the Shoryuken and the Tatsumaki senpukyaku. As well as a headband similar to Ryu's.
And Staff Kirby's staff being red with gold caps which is a common depiction of Wukong's Ruyi Jingu Bang. then there's the fact that it extends, which is also something that originated with the Ruyi Jingu Bang.
You forgot about to mention how the enemy Pacto is a reference to Pacman due to design and name :p
Just a small correction, while I'm not sure it's called Force Blast in it, Fighter has the same 3 level charging projectile in Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (no command input at this point though) which was made by HAL
The Spark + Cutter ability in Kirby 64 definitely is a Star Wars Reference
1:57 Kirby and Smash also use nearly identical control schemes
Wait I thought R.O.B first appeared in Startropics or is that a different robot?
I was going to say Darth Maul's lightsaber
the enemy/helper birdon's name might be a reference to an ultraman Kaiju with the same name.
Who (by the way) had THREE episodes.
The Hadouken attack even appears in Amazing Mirror as well!
It happens if you do the command with only 1 HP, I think
I like that you dedicate quite alot to kirby
9:14 screen shot of YuuYuuKi equivalent of this scene is on TCRF wiki
Freeze Kirby in Air Ride and Nightmare in Dreamland literally just uses the Ice Climbers hat from Smash Bros.
Kirby is the best Arcana refrence
Glad they got the important Mario characters in.
ROB's first appearance in a video game is in Startropics, 7 years before kirbys dreamland 3.
getting jumpscared with boxboy music, a boxboy mention, and being told to go play boxboy + boxgirl right after (spoilers) my wife died in a tale for one is not something i expected to happen today
15:15 actually, the bucket is from Stanley's parable
I came here to learn about Kirby references.
I left listening to an instumental of a song about death, depression and suicide.
That’s the Silvery experience
The Red Dragon is a reference to Alcahest, an SNES JRPG game (which also had the same composer as Kirby)
In star allies, when you fight void on soul melter EX, the background it shows for the splash screen is the same as when you fight 0
More of a callback but still
it's not ambiguous. there are a lot of actual straight up anime references in kirby. Lot of Evangelion references in enemies and concepts (and the beta version of Double Needle in 64) and Goriath was just goku
1:50 afaik PK is just japanese shorthand for psychic, so idk about calling that part a reference. the cap? definitely
Every single time someone asks me "what is this laser sword in [INSERT JAPANESE MEDIA HERE] based off of?" I will always say Gundam, even if its not baded on Gundam and even if i know its not based on it i will say Gundam.
These are actually really cool
Dark mind's final phase is a reference of Zelos Force from Gradius series(especially originate in Salamander)
