the saddest thing though is that people think that the whole scab thing is funny and all, but to her it's actually memorable. like that was one of the only good memories of her life, which to me makes the song a whole lot sadder.
The thing is, though, that part is supposed to be funny, especially for people who have never seen it before. That is one of the parts that helps make the ending of the song impactful. If they made this song sound super depressing all the way through, it wouldn't be nearly as beautiful
Piano Playah yeah honestly if you think about it, Martha's dream just IS a little laughable. Yet with this song, near the end, you'll find that everyone gets drawn into it anyway. It's the first time she goes from a joke to a 3-dimensional person, and it's then that you really understand her perspective; that all she dreamed of up till now wasn't so ridiculous at all. That's very important.
"Where naptime is centuries long" Always the point where I break down in tears. This musical is full of extremely powerful songs, but this one is just so sad.
i always cry when she gets louder after she says "and this time i'm never waking up" because usually in musicals, the louder you are, it represents how happy or triumphant you feel. she's feeling happy about her decision to commit suicide, and that breaks my heart every time.
martha acts innocent and childlike throughout the whole musical because kindergarten is where she felt most welcome and home. she didn't want to "grow up" because she was holding on to any chance of kindergarten or anything connected to it, but when her closest friend(the only one she had left) left her, she realized that the only way she could live in the world she wanted to was in what she considered "heaven", and to get there, she had to take her own life.
so here's a fun story. one time i was talking to my mom about heathers and she goes "oh hey ms. lori (a lady who's friends with us at church) has a daughter in that musical!" and i was like oh cool is she an extra? and my mom goes "i think so. is there a character that's supposed to be overweight?" and i was like......... martha dunstock???? and my mom was like "yeah that's the one!" AND I FLIPPED MY LID BECAUSE THAT MEANS I KNOW KATIE LADNER BY ASSOSIATION
Ikr? Never thought a silly song about a girl who can't move on fron her kindergarten crush would make me tear up multiple times. No idea how they did it.
Also it's much sadder if you realize that Veronica had just said some really mean stuff to her. And the fact that Veronica was now a "Heather" set in and it was the last straw.
I think Veronica abandoning her was what made Martha attempt suicide. Her Kindergarten Boyfriend, Ram, acted like she didn't exist and then got killed. Heather Duke was also a friend of hers when she was younger, but ditched her to become Chandler's punching dummy. Veronica was her friend "since diapers" and we can infer one of her last ones. She had no one left. :(
I remember playing Martha in my school play. When she was having that confrontation with Veronica, Veronica said to her [my] face. "Ram didn't love you. He was a dick! And now he's dead!! Get over it..." And dAMN that hurt, even though it had nothing to do with me. When I became Martha for that musical, I had to put my mental state into her personality. Seriously, those words burned me in my character to the core, making the song even easier to cry while singing it. 😂 Boi did that audience cry as well. 😂💙
+Chelsea Redmond (AdminRed) Personally I think that Martha is slightly more innocent. Heather M may be more innocent than Duke, Chandler and even Veronica, but she still backed up the Heathers in their cruelty and even caused pain (i.e the pinata at Ram's party). Martha felt the full force of the Heathers' reign, and not once thought about being horrible back. She just smiled it off, even when her only friend left her. Martha wouldn't say boo to a goose
To people who dont know. This song is Martha's suicide letter. In the song Yo Girl, H. Duke mentioned Martha was holding a suicide letter and this song is her singing it. When Martha mentioned "A dream that is centuries long" I believe she is hoping that when she is dead she will be happier until the end. The scab that Ram gives her is something she remembers because it was probably the last thing he gave her. Since it's the only thing she mentioned that he gave her. This song / ballad is Martha finally breaking and her not being able to live in her own little bubble in the world anymore. She couldn't keep up with the pain of being bullied and when Veronica became the new "Heather Chandler" she couldn't handle the pain anymore. We know that Veronica is the new H. Chandler because in the song Yo Girl "Still you've earned that red Scrunchie. Come join Heather in Hell"
I was lucky enough to see "Heathers" a few times during its run in New York. Every time this song began, the audience would giggle a bit the first time Martha sang "ooo ooo ooo" at the end of the first verse. But as the song went on and Martha's story unfolded, the audience would grow quiet, and everybody was so moved by the end of it. It happened every time, and it's a real testament to the actress playing what was a throwaway comic sight-gag role in the movie, filling in Martha's whole backstory so beautifully before our eyes.
dan I'm pretty sure that's why they're like that. Sure, it can be annoying (I get annoyed by it too) but they're showing their appreciation for a wonderful performance
I love how this musical portrays the high school movie stereotypes and flips them around. JD is a typical love interest on the outside, but he's been emotionally abused and traumatized, which causes him to be the way he is. Heather McNamara, the "dumbest girl you'll ever meet" character turns out to suffer from anxiety and depression. Martha, in an average high school film, is the joke, the jolly fat girl that's an easy target, Martha's the cinnamon roll. She knows she's being made fun of, but she decides to ignore that and always give a second chance because she hopes/believes that people are good. The only characters i can think of that are irredeemable are Heather Chandler, Heather Duke, and Ram and the other guy. And I think in H. Duke's case you could argue she went mad with power after Heather Chandler died. The musical is kind of the same way, it's perceived as a silly musical made off of a dark comedy from 80's, but the musical carries some real grit to it.
Your Obedient Sandwich, A. Ham Heather Duke is a bad person, but maybe she is the way she is because of social pressure. Let's not forget the fact that she has bulimia.
I highly doubt that she went mad with power after Heather Chandler died, because H. Chandler stated that H. Duke I such a sad little poser, before Duke even found the scrunchie, and in Candy Store, she steals H. Chandler's "Welcome to my Candy Store!" Before Chandler says to "Shut up Heather!", And if you pay close attention to the play, you can see H. Duke getting ANNOYED with Heather Chandler bossing her around, even acting jealous that she isn't the main Heather, and a suck up to Chandler, So I highly doubt that she was mad with bower, but just cold hearted and mean spirited, so I really don't think that she has any redeeming qualities. And Chandler is just a slutty, Fear Vampire/Mythic Bitch.
I honestly kind of feel like Chandler might be the way she is because of social pressures and shit, like she acts the way she does because it's a way out of being the target- maybe she likes doing it too, but I think some part of her honestly feels like she has to act this way or risk being the victim herself. In the movie she seems to be pretty disgusted with some of the things she has to do to keep up her popularity, so she's really not as confident as people make her out to be. Her and Heather Duke sure are bitches, but I don't think Heather Chandler ISN'T redeemable. Duke isn't, but Chandler isn't a terrible human either.
Yeah, what I really wanted was for Heather C. And Heather Duke to finally realize what they had done, maybe H. Chandler's ghost could have sung a reprise to Lifeboat or something, finally looking back on who she was as a kid, and who she is now. Also, I think H. Chandler always had a natural bitchiness to her, but the whole point of the musical is to portray social pressures and other things that go through high schools, so I think when people began worshipping her for the fact that she was pretty, just made her self entitlement worse and worse, and if you listen to the way Kurt and Ram talk about her, it's clear a lot of people think of her as just a pretty thing to go and bone. And Heather Duke, was tired of being talked down to by Heather C. and, she took out her anger and all the stuff she had pent up inside at H. McNamara after she sang Lifeboat, so everyone is sort of a victim to each other.
I tried singing this once in my theatre class at school but as I was singing I started crying, especially when I had to belt out "to a new kindergarten"
+Vanessa Parks People laugh because the lyrics are slightly ridiculous and at odds with what's happening onstage. It causes uncertainty whether they should laugh at the words or be upset at what the song clearly means, and that kind of uncertainty causes a discomfort which people try and defuse with laughter. The song is, imo, one of the best examples of black comedy in the play. It's supposed to be funny, but in an uncomfortable way. At least, that's what I take away from it.
The only time I ever really cry is when I feel depressed for my own reasons. I never cry at sad parts of movies or anything like that... But if anything ever succeeds at making me want to cry, i have a big shit eating grin on my face.
"so I'll build a dream that I can live in and this time I'm never waking up" Her whole life she has been living a delusion, thinking that this boy was in love with her because it was better that accepting the reality of her world. Her reality is that none of her peers appreciate her worth, her innocence, her purity. Martha Dunstock really is the most beautiful character of the musical. She feels the full extent of the hatred the Heather's brought to the school and her story is so sad because she deserves none of it. Hands down, my favorite song of the musical.
Mairéad Young Martha more of a cinnamon roll (Sorry Heather M. Can't completely get over the fact you volunteered Veronica for date rape....and refused to let her in the car while helping spread an awful rumor about Veronica 😐)
If you think about it. Martha always kinda dresses like a kindergartener(unicorn sweater and stuff). It's because she never wants to leave kindergarten in her mind. This song is kinda just her realizing it's not kindergarten anymore. 😭😭
I can really relate to Martha in the spirituality of this song. Most people say Martha has been living in her dream, and people kept telling her to wake up. It's not that easy to wake up to reality because of how cruel it is compared to your dream, and it really makes you want to sleep forever.
It just hit me that Martha probably knows what a Pegasus is but she still calls it a horse with wings cause that's what a child in kindergarten would call it.
I know the line "and a horse with wings" is supposed to be funny, but I always see it as the moment when she realizes that she is not in kindergarten anymore. Think about it. The song is all fun and games up until that line. It opens up her eyes and she realizes it was a dream and that it never happened. I like to think that she then looks around at her life. She dresses as if she were in kindergarten, the guy she liked is dead, and her best friend left her. She realizes that her life has turned to shit and she didn't even notice. Now whenever I think of a horse with wings, I just feel so bad for all the crap that Martha had to go through. I hope that all the Marthas out there are okay.
This is Martha's final ballad before she attempts suicide by jumping off a bridge. That's why she's "creating her own dream" that she'll never have to wake up from.
some girl called chloe Well, Mac had anxiety and depression that lead her to bully others, yes, but she still did super fuckin awful things to people. In the musical she's a sweeter person - but she literally lets Kurt and Ram attempt to sexually harrass Veronica and hides with Heather Duke (who provably set it up for Mac to get harrassed) in the car while this occurs. Meanwhile, Martha struggled with harassment, depression, and abandonment at this point and _never hurt anyone, no matter how frightened she was_.
The second "then he woke up" hits me hard. It represents how Martha realizes Ram doesn't love her like he did in Kindergarten. Like, he himself woke up from the dream and moved on while Martha is still stuck dreaming a life with Ram.
i love this song in the musical, because there's a prolonged pause after the line "certain girls are meant to be alone" where Martha walks up to the 'bridge' before continuing with the song, and its just completely silent and extremely emotional
This hits me so hard because the reason Martha still remembers his kindergarten romance with him after almost ten years it's because nobody in school has shown her that same love or respect ever since then... Ughh why do I do this to my heart ;_; Edit: OMG MOM LOOK AT HOW MANY LIKES I HAVE ARE YOU PROUD OF ME NOW
fraya1022 True, but by this point Veronica had already left her flat to join the Heathers, and some few scenes before she had to tell Martha horrible things so that she wouldn't start investigating Kurt and Ram's "suicide" and JD wouldn't go after her. Now she feels betrayed and probably thinks Vero never cared for her and was laughing at her back all along.
"Then he woke up" damn, this whole song is Martha realizing that she's been living her life in a dream as if she was still in kindergarten. she's realising that highschool has no room for horses with wings, as it is , well, a thunderdome. and within that social hierarchy she has no place. someone who's been put through so much shit and yet lived with so much optimism, giving in and accepting their worthlessness and any hope for change is based in delusion, it's just so. also, how does this not have a million views already? it's one of the most poignant songs in the whole musical!? Fucking "Blue", the song about Kurt and Ram's balls, has more views and likes than this. come On fandom. we're better than this.
The fact "Blue" has more views is probably because it's about silly stupid dick jokes with attempted date-rape lurking in the background, while this song is about a girl's motives to kill herself. To put it bluntly, compared to "Blue", this song's a downer. The average fan will usually go for silly than sad. But yeah, the fandom is better than this.
*Peachy,* I agree! I even hate that song! Granted it did give me some chuckles, until you learn the fact that they were going to date-rape the Heathers, well, Veronica since the Heathers were in the car & she wasn’t. But at least those two doushes are dead.
The scab thing might seem funny or gross, but it just makes me sad. The last time anyone treated her like they loved her was when this kid (who turned out to be a total shithead when he grew up) did something super gross for her. The only reason she still cares about the kindergarten boyfriend anymore is because no one has cared about her like that since then. It's her senior year now.
I agree with most of what you said but Ram didn’t actually get to grow up. He was only 17 when he died, and the brain isn’t fully developed until you’re 25 years old. He (and Heather C and Kurt for that matter) still had the potential to grow and change into better people, a lot of times high school brings out the absolute worst in people, after graduating and becoming an adult he could’ve easily gone back to the kind hearted person he was in kindergarten without the social pressures of high school (and I _personally_ think he had internalized biphobia and Kurt had internalized homophobia which also caused them to hate themselves and lash out on others). I’m not saying he wasn’t a total shithead, because he was, the issue I have with what you said is “turned out to be” because he didn’t actually get to grow up. (ALSO DISCLAIMER: I’m talking about musical Ram not movie Ram, movie Ram is a rxpist and I hate him (ik a lot of people say musical Ram is also a rxpist but he and Kurt never actually touched Veronica they just begged for sex by singing Blue which is pathetic but not rxpe))
"ill build a dream that i can live in" I recited that before I began writing my suicide note but then I got a message from my best friend asking if i wanted to hang out so I said yes and when i came back home I finished the suicide note than ripped it up and decided that i had just had an amazing time with my friend and that i was already living in my dream with my best friend, my family, my other friends and my amazing boyfriend. I still struggle with depression, anxiety and multiple other things but it gets better xx it always does
I lost it at "..And this time I'm never waking up.." because she's literally talking about suicide. This was her suicide attempt, and the reason she's thinking about these moments, is so they can be her last thoughts- so they never end.
The part were Martha says ‘certain girls are meant to be alone’ reminds me so much of when Elle Woods in Legally Blonde sings some girls are just meant to smile’. The music for Heathers and Legally Blonde is done by the same person after all!
"My kindergarten boyfriend and I. And a horse with wings." Despite the deep and sad feeling of this song, the writers were still able to add some humor to it, and I love that."
elliot hoinville I viewed it more like a sad realization that she's been dreaming about such an imaginary "kindergarten" life that was unrealistic to how the world really works
Honestly, I don't mind the scab part because it represents a high point in her life. considering what Martha goes through, for her receiving that scab from Ram was probably like getting a diamond ring 😊
It took several replays to realize what she meant when she said "And then he woke up" a second time. Not from nap time, but he woke up to the world they are living now.
I just like how sve uses "then he woke up" in two senses 1. The first one is innocent and cute. Everyone must wake up from a nap sometime. 2. And then he darker one. He woke up. He realized how "ugly" "fat" ect... Martha was...
The only thing that bothers me about this song is all of the vibrato. Is she doing it purposefully? Not to say that I know any better: she’s the one with a role in a big-name musical. But my ignorance aside, it seems a bit unnecessary for so much consecutive vibrato on A4’s that are held for less than 2 seconds
Because Determination it's actually funny bc when the movie first came out it sucked at the box office but when it got released on VHS it sold really well. Now like nearly 20 years later a musical comes out and no one knows about it so it stopped soon then once again later after its legacy is done everyone loves it again
I was lucky enough to play Martha in my high school's version of Heathers and had the pleasure of singing this song. There were little things i never saw in the song like when Martha sings "he said that i was smart" which meant Ram saw her personality before her looks. Martha was my first lead role in ANY musical and i had people coming to me in tears. I miss performing as Martha so much and it hasnt even been 3 days sine the show ended ;-;
I love how when Martha said, "Then he woke up" the piano sounded a little bit sinister then quickly morphed back into the sweet melody for the song. Also her voice is goals
"Certain boys are just meant for kindergarten. Certain girls are certain to be alone." Im sitting in the dark of my room and I can relate to this so much I'm actually crying
Lanie Perez but heather McNamara wasn’t really a bully more like a follower who suffered from society’s stereotypes like the other characters and followed the other two to keep from being bullied.
Marina Diaz In the Musical, Martha sings this song standing on a bridge. After she sings the last lyric she jumps off. But she only broke bones, so she lived.
It’s sad to think that her dream guy that she loved for 12 years, wrote her a letter then she was embarrassed by him and THEN found out the next day that he was dead..... damn poor her AND SHE STILL LOVED HIM!
Her first kiss was in kindergarten? People make fun of her, but honestly, she's got game! 3:04 And amazing vocals! Obviously, the actress not the character, and this is Broadway, so it is to be expected, but still worth mentioning! Damn, is she talented!
But I believe that any dream worth having is a dream that should not have to end so I'll build a dream that i can live and this time im never waking up Is she saying she'll kill herself...?
I feel like Martha was the only one who ever acted her age. Everyone else around her was always trying to act more grown up than they actually were. Seventeen is still kid in a lot of ways when you think about it.
I'm pretty sure my parents think I'm crazy because i knew all the words to this song and i was singing it really loudly in the car with so much enthusiasm...
When I heard "And this time I'm never waking up" I realized- GOD- I replayed this song a lot because I didn't got everything correctly the first time and it breaks my heart.
If anyone's wants an example of perfect character development in a short amount of time, this is it. It starts so perfectly comic, with lines like 'at naptime once, we shared a mat' suggesting that Martha is just a tragically comic character. It's been done countless times before, that bit in which a character goes on about their not-serious woes to comedic effect, so a listener naturally doesn't expect this song to go where it does, showing the mind of a deeply troubled and emotionally dependent character. I used to be like Martha back in high school, I'll admit that, and I sank to that exact level on multiple occasions, and knowing that hell makes me love this song all the more.
this song makes me think about my life everytime I listen to it I've lived just like Martha, just a Kindergarten boyfriend that ended in first grade, no boyfriend ever again, and just a few friends that usually left me aside. i've had suicide thoughts since I was in third grade, and to be sincere, they haven't end yet. but just like in this musical's ending, I got a friend (not a long time friend since diapers, but a friend I've known for almost 6 years), she has helped my through my parents' divorce (about 2 years ago), and I can really trust her and watch bad movies in Netflix with her, and just talk about life and be happy, even if it's for just a moment. I always cry when I hear this song, and I hope things get only better in the future. and I hope things get better for everyone
@@user-lv6km5pz4q hey, thanks for asking! Being honest, my life has still been rocky but it's been so much better than before. I studied an animation career, finished with honors, and now I'm looking for a house to rent 🤗 In college i made more friends and also had some partners that didn't last long (still single lol) but now that doesn't bother me as much. These few years have helped me a lot for my self esteem, and now i believe the only way to go is up 😁
Okay but when she said "certain boys are meant for kindergarten -- certain girls are meant to be alone" My heart instantly snapped and I was instantly reminded of how I used to think like that and then I realized that, holy fuck, Martha probably fucking hates herself, bc the boy she likes is dead, her best friend is a bitch, she was bullied by him and others for years, and not to mention she's been the butt of all the fat jokes. And when she said "so I'll build a dream that I can live in, and this time I'm never waking up" I WAS LIKE MARTHA SWEETY NOOOOO. PLS NOOOO. MY HEART SHATTERED LIKE BABY NO, I LOVE YOU. I MEA SURE HEATHER M IS ALL LIKE DEPRESSED AND SHIT BUT THIS BABY IS SO FUCKING PURE AND SHE JUST WANTED LOVE AND PEOPLE TO LIKE HER BUT THAT NEVER HAPPENED SO SHE DECIDED SHE WAS GONNA DIE SO IT CAN FINALLY COME TRUE.
I think heather Mac. and Martha are the strongest characters in this musical. I usually will audition for the leads in musicals but I want heather macnamera so bad just because of the impact she left on me and I'm sure so many others. I love these two characters more than any other character in this show
I just need to say DAMN the person who hit that note at 3:02 !!!! That was fudging beautiful, the fact she hit that without going into her head voice like damn oh my goodness. *applause* maybe I'm over exaggerating because I've been practicing for so long and still can't do something like that but that could mean I just don't have skill *tear slowly falls down face*
Martha doesn't get enough credit! She's so sweet and beautiful. Everyone else is obsessing over Veronica and The Heathers but I'm here like "Hey Martha is cool too..."
A sad fact: when a depressed person is planning to kill themself, they might seem very happy to their friends and family in the few days or weeks right before they have it planned. This kinda makes me head canon that Martha definitely was depressed and planned to kill herself on the bridge, which is why this song has a rather upbeat tone despite how sad it is.
Dani in the den I always cry at the stay alive reprise and who lives who dies who tells your story from Hamilton. And sometimes during dear Evan Hanson.
As someone with autism Martha's story is very relatable to me. When other kids start forming cliques, pushing away "losers", backstabbing and spreading rumors about others, you're still stuck with the kindergarten mentality of "if I'm nice to others, they'll be my friend." But deep down you know that will never live in that world again. The world that made sense. The world where people respected you and treated you like everyone else and not like a pariah. So you take those few memories of positive interaction with peers and hold them close to your heart. And escape into a fantasy of a just world where kindness is good and cruelty is bad.
I realize that sadly I kind of relate to this song. Martha had the sense of innocence in her, she held on to her childhood joy.. kind of like I did. I cried for so long because my childhood was slowly slipping away, and the people I’ve shared good moments couldn’t relate to how dearly I kept the memories . With Martha it’s like everything fell apart for her, and she decided to create a fake reality.. where she was with her long lost crush again. It’s depressing how you can hold on to someone for so long.. and watch them slowly start to care for you less and less. What’s even more depressing is.. ending yourself over it, creating a “dream you can live in” where your with that person again.. but they’re the people you want them to be and not who they actually are.. which is why the is song always gives me shivers. It’s so depressing yet so bitterly relatable to me and I adore it.
That moment that halfway across the song you realize it was her final words before she would jump and now you're begging for her not to jump throughout the song wishing she won't stop singin-GOODDAMMMMIIITTT MY FEELS QAQ~!!!
i think there's actually clues to martha being a bit unstable, as in, not dangerous to anyone but herself. she longs to go back to "kindergarten" so much so that she starts to form delusions, pinning all her hopes on this singular guy's affection. the emotional pain and trauma from all those years of unrequited love and bullying led her to build an idealized world in her mind that was shattered by ram's "suicide", and losing her only friend. i'm not saying martha is crazy in any way, but there are signs to her being a bit not right (especially considering the movie's alternate ending where she stabs veronica and calls her heather. but hey thats not canon). anyways, just my thoughts on her character. i love martha and she deserved so much better.
I feel this song. Its just relatable,my ‘best friend’ is now so popular and he doesn’t have more time for me.He is the only person that thinks that I’m worth a lot when I’m really not- Now I’m alone is just like he died.I don’t have any more friends but I had him. He is the reason why I’m depressed now. Thanks Martha for such a beautiful act
If you're a man, you're not supposed to cry because of a song. But if this can't pluck a heartstring, you're not human. I'd rather be human than a man.
I feel like when she says "Over cars and croquet lawns" she is referring to the Heathers and how she is leaving them behind because they bullied her and made a fake love note from Ram and you know the Heathers play croquet so kind've a clue
One of the reasons why i love this musical is that it's comedic with an underlying darkness and deep in it, the small details, the sudden switch from cheery then depressive/romantic then dark, also each main cast gets to have a solo song about them/their relationships which gives them depth, 10/10 would always it eat up
"I'm a sucker for happy endings."
"Are there _any_ happy endings?"
damn...from the beginning of the musical to the end...she lost literally all hope for happy endings...WHY ARE MY EYES SWEATING
Dude (T_T) I'm crying.
Why did you have to remind me that?😭 poor Martha
THEY RUINED MARTHA
This... Hurt me so much...
who gave you the right
This song kindof makes me feel like the message is "what seems like the smallest act can leave a huge scar on a person"
And it leaves a scap you keep in a locket
Joanne Minnett me in a nutshell
Joanne Minnett Agreed.
Same
Tru
the saddest thing though is that people think that the whole scab thing is funny and all, but to her it's actually memorable. like that was one of the only good memories of her life, which to me makes the song a whole lot sadder.
Syde Music I totally agree
Syde Music when i saw the Video of the whole show recorded i fucking screamed at them to stop laughing at this
i just couldnt take it
The thing is, though, that part is supposed to be funny, especially for people who have never seen it before.
Syde Music i goggle a bit cause it's cute
"Martha has had a thing for Ram for like 12 years now. This note would kill her"
Literally 😢
Ram was the boy from kindergarten
Angel Ufo Me - "I don't get it."
Me, 5 seconds later - "oh...oho...oHooOO."
Holy shit
Veronica was right. Something she got right. *cough*JD*cough*
i just remembered that ram is dead during this song
Oh... I never thought of that...
*sToP i'M aLrEaDy CrYiNg-*
STOP YOUR MAKING ME CRY
Oh I forgot abt that-
Then one day He didn’t wake up
"Where naptime is centuries long"
Me: oh........ OH
Roma TM me
I cried at this part😭
*crying*
I got it when she said "And this time I'm never waking up"
I honestly didn't even know how to react
I didn't get it until I thought of it.... welp, time to cry in the corner
"Certain girls are meant to be alone" MY HEART SHATTERED MARTHA
same 😭
Nobody deserves to be alone no matter who they are
Why would your heart do such a thing
Commas are important.
jess oh es MARTHA WHY
"Where naptime is centuries long"
Always the point where I break down in tears. This musical is full of extremely powerful songs, but this one is just so sad.
Artemisia Riddle me too
Artemisia Riddle that's when I realized it was a suicide song😭😭😭
Artemisia Riddle and moving^
Yeah blue makes me cry too lol
i always cry when she gets louder after she says "and this time i'm never waking up" because usually in musicals, the louder you are, it represents how happy or triumphant you feel. she's feeling happy about her decision to commit suicide, and that breaks my heart every time.
martha acts innocent and childlike throughout the whole musical because kindergarten is where she felt most welcome and home. she didn't want to "grow up" because she was holding on to any chance of kindergarten or anything connected to it, but when her closest friend(the only one she had left) left her, she realized that the only way she could live in the world she wanted to was in what she considered "heaven", and to get there, she had to take her own life.
Well yes… but also Ram is dead so
so here's a fun story. one time i was talking to my mom about heathers and she goes "oh hey ms. lori (a lady who's friends with us at church) has a daughter in that musical!" and i was like oh cool is she an extra? and my mom goes "i think so. is there a character that's supposed to be overweight?" and i was like......... martha dunstock???? and my mom was like "yeah that's the one!" AND I FLIPPED MY LID BECAUSE THAT MEANS I KNOW KATIE LADNER BY ASSOSIATION
Beth C congratulations
Beth C, noice bruh! So random, but even though I’m a year lat to ask, can you tell her some rando on the internet loves her.

Pfft
Definitely true to Blue
Ikr? Never thought a silly song about a girl who can't move on fron her kindergarten crush would make me tear up multiple times. No idea how they did it.
I mean yeah we all expected our hearts to be ripped out with "blue" but we we're surprised weren't we ._.
Also it's much sadder if you realize that Veronica had just said some really mean stuff to her. And the fact that Veronica was now a "Heather" set in and it was the last straw.
Allison x
True
"Now. You’re. Truly a Heather...
Smell how gangsta you are!"
Get over it..."
And dAMN that hurt, even though it had nothing to do with me.
When I became Martha for that musical, I had to put my mental state into her personality.
Seriously, those words burned me in my character to the core, making the song even easier to cry while singing it. 😂
Boi did that audience cry as well. 😂💙
Allison x it’s like when jeremy called michael a loser
Martha is like the only innocent person in this entire musical.
To me, both Martha /and/ Heather M are innocent, and really need to be protected
Chelsea Redmond true...
Harry Lindfield is that a saying?
+Cosima Niehaus is superior to all of us What, boo to a goose? It's a British saying that means the same as she wouldn't harm a fly
Could you imagine ghost Ram hearing this tho
I always imagined that he would feel bad if he could hear this.😢

Fanfic idea: Ghost Ram hears this song and he saves her from death and only results in couple of broken bones.
Also, she mimics ghost/illusion Heather C. When she tells the truth about the letter to Veronica.
It happened every time, and it's a real testament to the actress playing what was a throwaway comic sight-gag role in the movie, filling in Martha's whole backstory so beautifully before our eyes.
wow I wish I could have seen it

i mean i hate it when i was about to cry or something, then everyone is like "WOOOO" **WHISTLES WILDLY**
dan I'm pretty sure that's why they're like that.
I died when you said Ram and the other guy
I tried singing this once in my theatre class at school but as I was singing I started crying, especially when I had to belt out "to a new kindergarten"
Marisa Pixel it's okay, i probably would've broke down too if i tried to sing this in front of people
+Vanessa Parks People laugh because the lyrics are slightly ridiculous and at odds with what's happening onstage.
It's okay I'm pretty sure I would to, but kudos to you for trying to sing it
Violet_Presley_13 I always have a problem with crying when I sing this song too it's like impossible to make it all the way through without crying
The only time I ever really cry is when I feel depressed for my own reasons. I never cry at sad parts of movies or anything like that... But if anything ever succeeds at making me want to cry, i have a big shit eating grin on my face.
martha is the only one who did nothing wrong this whole musical

"so I'll build a dream that I can live in and this time I'm never waking up"
Her whole life she has been living a delusion, thinking that this boy was in love with her because it was better that accepting the reality of her world.
I agree with everything.
Well I feel completely insensitive cause my favorite song is Dead Girl Walking
ASliceofKai it's hard for me to listen to this song... I feel depressed whenever I hear this beautiful work.

Mairéad Young Martha more of a cinnamon roll (Sorry Heather M. Can't completely get over the fact you volunteered Veronica for date rape....and refused to let her in the car while helping spread an awful rumor about Veronica 😐)
FaiEm Productions eh it's not really that creepy it's a crush
If you think about it. Martha always kinda dresses like a kindergartener(unicorn sweater and stuff). It's because she never wants to leave kindergarten in her mind. This song is kinda just her realizing it's not kindergarten anymore. 😭😭
Allison x true! Wow I've never realized that before
Allison x thanks for the feels :,)
Allison x oH MY GOD MY HEART
Unicorns are for *everyone*.
Does she still wear the sweater at the end of the musical? I wouldn't know cause I've never watched it.
I can really relate to Martha in the spirituality of this song. Most people say Martha has been living in her dream, and people kept telling her to wake up. It's not that easy to wake up to reality because of how cruel it is compared to your dream, and it really makes you want to sleep forever.
I completely agree! I feel like a lot of people miss that point
She can't wake yo, because she never took the nap
It just hit me that Martha probably knows what a Pegasus is but she still calls it a horse with wings cause that's what a child in kindergarten would call it.
stop 😭😭 crying
You just ruined me *cries*
Rebecca Nugent this comment hit me harder than the song ever has
"and her best friend left her" ok thats actually rlly sad bc veronica rlly did leave her to become depressed brb imma cri
Rebecca Nugent Phantrash?
Doctor Potter's Phantastic Beast at the Discø yeah, you?
This is Martha's final ballad before she attempts suicide by jumping off a bridge. That's why she's "creating her own dream" that she'll never have to wake up from.
final and only ballad, lol.
Kelly Ainsworth stop cutting fucking onions
Kelly Ainsworth NOOOOOOOO
Hey, at least she lived

Martha baby no, I love you, don't jump off the bridge
You're the only pure cinnamon roll in this musical, we love you
Claire Sheedlo Heather McNamara though
some girl called chloe yes you can say that again
some girl called chloe Well, Mac had anxiety and depression that lead her to bully others, yes, but she still did super fuckin awful things to people.
I like musical Martha better because we get more to her so musical Martha is a pure roll that did not deserve anything bad
Also same to Heather M.
Sadly
i hate how martha’s depression isnt taken as seriously as mcnamara’s like-

@@psychonautismthose people are sick
@@psychonautismthe first part is supposed to be funny! but if they were laughing at the end that’s pretty sick
This hits me so hard because the reason Martha still remembers his kindergarten romance with him after almost ten years it's because nobody in school has shown her that same love or respect ever since then... Ughh why do I do this to my heart ;_;
Edit: OMG MOM LOOK AT HOW MANY LIKES I HAVE ARE YOU PROUD OF ME NOW
La Esmeralda But she has a best friend?
fraya1022
True, but by this point Veronica had already left her flat to join the Heathers, and some few scenes before she had to tell Martha horrible things so that she wouldn't start investigating Kurt and Ram's "suicide" and JD wouldn't go after her. Now she feels betrayed and probably thinks Vero never cared for her and was laughing at her back all along.

"Then he woke up"
damn, this whole song is Martha realizing that she's been living her life in a dream as if she was still in kindergarten.
she's realising that highschool has no room for horses with wings, as it is , well, a thunderdome. and within that social hierarchy she has no place.
someone who's been put through so much shit and yet lived with so much optimism, giving in and accepting their worthlessness and any hope for change is based in delusion, it's just so.
also, how does this not have a million views already? it's one of the most poignant songs in the whole musical!? Fucking "Blue", the song about Kurt and Ram's balls, has more views and likes than this. come On fandom. we're better than this.
The fact "Blue" has more views is probably because it's about silly stupid dick jokes with attempted date-rape lurking in the background, while this song is about a girl's motives to kill herself. To put it bluntly, compared to "Blue", this song's a downer. The average fan will usually go for silly than sad.
But yeah, the fandom is better than this.
Blue makes me uncomfortable and is honestly my least favourite song in the musical..
*Peachy,* I agree! I even hate that song! Granted it did give me some chuckles, until you learn the fact that they were going to date-rape the Heathers, well, Veronica since the Heathers were in the car & she wasn’t.
But at least those two doushes are dead.
People don’t like being sad.
idk it might just be me but I dont think they were that bad. They where pretty shitty people, but they didnt actually rape her.
"He was mine until we hit first grade." "Then he woke up" oh my god that hit my heart

Zach Haines I don't get chills. Just waterfalls down my face.
It's the only part of the song and the only song in the musical that never fails to make me cry ;-;
Zach Haines dude i’ve been getting chills this whole damn time i’m freezing
The scab thing might seem funny or gross, but it just makes me sad. The last time anyone treated her like they loved her was when this kid (who turned out to be a total shithead when he grew up) did something super gross for her. The only reason she still cares about the kindergarten boyfriend anymore is because no one has cared about her like that since then. It's her senior year now.
It's not really that gross when ya think about the deeper meaning. He gave her a piece of himself to keep.
bumbleguts the only reason why he's like is because of his dad

Proud of you
Let me hug you you never deserve any of this as a person also dealt with depression. Let me hug you you sweet little cinnamon roll
I'm incredibly proud of you!
That's great, we're all proud!
And a horse with wings." Despite the deep and sad feeling of this song, the writers were still able to add some humor to it, and I love that."
elliot hoinville I think is more when she realizes that it was a dream becaude there was a freaking pegasus there
elliot hoinville I viewed it more like a sad realization that she's been dreaming about such an imaginary "kindergarten" life that was unrealistic to how the world really works
Doesn't seem funny to me tbh
This is the saddest suicide song I've ever heard.
How many suicide songs have you heard, Mrs Flemming?
This is not your everyday suicide song
That scab thing is really gross but I cry everytime i hear this song anyway
ram is a gross guy
Anne Thomassen up so gross but I guess that's what you do when your a kid
it was in kindergarten kids do gross things
Honestly, I don't mind the scab part because it represents a high point in her life. considering what Martha goes through, for her receiving that scab from Ram was probably like getting a diamond ring 😊
!!!!
Her kindegarten boyfriend was *RAM*?! How did I miss that wtf?!
It took several replays to realize what she meant when she said "And then he woke up" a second time. Not from nap time, but he woke up to the world they are living now.
I just like how sve uses "then he woke up" in two senses
1. The first one is innocent and cute. Everyone must wake up from a nap sometime.
2. And then he darker one. He woke up. He realized how "ugly" "fat" ect... Martha was...
In my opinion, she is the most talented singer and actress in the musical. The lyrics at times are a little strange but it's so beautiful and sad
The name of the actress that plays Martha is Katie Ladner. In case you wanted to look her up
blur blur an E? Wow that's the highest string on my violin and she's only behind Ariana grande by like one note which is F omg
blur blur oh ok
The highest note Veronica sings is actually an A5 in the Dead Girl Walking Reprise on the yeah, but the point still stands about Vernoica vs Martha
Such a underrated show
Cooley Movies really tho
I love how even more fans decide to show up 2 to 3 years later.
Because Determination it's actually funny bc when the movie first came out it sucked at the box office but when it got released on VHS it sold really well. Now like nearly 20 years later a musical comes out and no one knows about it so it stopped soon then once again later after its legacy is done everyone loves it again
*an underrated
I've literally just found it and I love it. 😂
So shocking and tragic- I think we all assumed that her motives weren't as deep as this explains. Shockingly beautiful, and tragically saddening.
Is nobody going to talk about how beautiful her voice is?
I was lucky enough to play Martha in my high school's version of Heathers and had the pleasure of singing this song. There were little things i never saw in the song like when Martha sings "he said that i was smart" which meant Ram saw her personality before her looks.
I LOVE MARTHA IM GONNA CRY COME BACK HEATHERS

i've had suicide thoughts since I was in third grade, and to be sincere, they haven't end yet.
but just like in this musical's ending, I got a friend (not a long time friend since diapers, but a friend I've known for almost 6 years), she has helped my through my parents' divorce (about 2 years ago), and I can really trust her and watch bad movies in Netflix with her, and just talk about life and be happy, even if it's for just a moment.

In college i made more friends and also had some partners that didn't last long (still single lol) but now that doesn't bother me as much.
These few years have helped me a lot for my self esteem, and now i believe the only way to go is up 😁
The line "What can I say? I'm a sucker for a happy ending." suddenly makes more sense.
the second "then he woke up" GETS ME EVERY. TIME.
Why am I listening to this knowing that Valentine's Day is coming up....
I did this for my elementary school talent show. Let me just say, this is how you get an audience to start crying.
I think heather Mac. and Martha are the strongest characters in this musical. I usually will audition for the leads in musicals but I want heather macnamera so bad just because of the impact she left on me and I'm sure so many others. I love these two characters more than any other character in this show
I headcanon that rams ghost witnessed this entire song and realised how horrible he had been when he was alive
I panicked so much when she attempted suicide, but I'm really glad she survived.
"And this time I'm never waking up" "Where naptime is centuries long " 😭
Martha doesn't get enough credit! She's so sweet and beautiful. Everyone else is obsessing over Veronica and The Heathers but I'm here like "Hey Martha is cool too..."
Okay, that's it. I'm adopting Martha.
Can I babysit? Er...Cinnabunsit?
Can’t. I already did it.

Sorry, I was about to say something else, but I saw your username, and now I’m very concerned for Martha.
I watched the film and i was so surprised to see Martha was hardly in it 😳😅
They combined two characters from the movie to create marthas character arc for the musical
I've never cried because of a musical before. I've gotten teary, but this is the first one that got me
les mis. any song in that musical can make me cry
I always cry because of Falsettos.
Dani in the den I always cry at the stay alive reprise and who lives who dies who tells your story from Hamilton. And sometimes during dear Evan Hanson.
C e Rm i T?
Dani in the den DEH and Hamilton makes me cry
As someone with autism Martha's story is very relatable to me.
When other kids start forming cliques, pushing away "losers", backstabbing and spreading rumors about others, you're still stuck with the kindergarten mentality of "if I'm nice to others, they'll be my friend."
But deep down you know that will never live in that world again.
It’s so depressing yet so bitterly relatable to me and I adore it.
you know i thought this was gonna be a joke song of them making fun of martha
HAHAHA I WAS SO FUCKI NG WR ON G
Technically speaking... This is the best song in the show
Definitely the most relatable song, to me, out of this entire soundtrack.
Its just relatable,my ‘best friend’ is now so popular and he doesn’t have more time for me.He is the only person that thinks that I’m worth a lot when I’m really not-
Now I’m alone is just like he died.I don’t have any more friends but I had him.
He is the reason why I’m depressed now. Thanks Martha for such a beautiful act
If you're a man, you're not supposed to cry because of a song.
But if this can't pluck a heartstring, you're not human.
I'd rather be human than a man.
Michael Offner If you're a man it doesn't matter if you cry or not lmfao what
@@princenaemon that's the point
Good on ya, Mike. Real men don't dam the flow. Real men let themselves feel.

UA-cam University YES
I feel like when she says "Over cars and croquet lawns" she is referring to the Heathers and how she is leaving them behind because they bullied her and made a fake love note from Ram and you know the Heathers play croquet so kind've a clue
One of the reasons why i love this musical is that it's comedic with an underlying darkness and deep in it, the small details, the sudden switch from cheery then depressive/romantic then dark, also each main cast gets to have a solo song about them/their relationships which gives them depth, 10/10 would always it eat up
*watches one Heathers video*
Nothing Heathers related pops up on home page...

Well I'm screwed for life.
