In this video I cover four key principles for proper walking form. I encourage you to incorporate them into your walking routine so that you gain the full health benefits of walking.
A very helpful video. I’m recovering from problems with my thoracic spine and lumbar spine. Walking is something I can do pain-free, and this video is just what I needed. Thank you, Margaret!
Hi Margaret, Thank you for your postings. I too taught Taiji to seniors for fall prevention along with the Matter of Balance Program. I see too many seniors and elderly people look down at each step while walking. I agree with you and have taught that when the eyes and the head drops down to look at a step or to use the cellphone, the shoulders roll forward and there is a forward lean. Then, they start ball walking, walking on the balls of their feet or shuffling. Thus, there is an increased risk of a dangerous forward trip fall and injury to face, head, hands and wrists. To counter this, I also instruct seniors in the taiji walk, to scanning the sidewalk for hazards using their eyes, using their peripheral vision which is up and down too, to place their heels down gently first and roll into the ball and into the toes, finishing with a gentle heel thrust, walking with head up, mindfully and to of course, to slow down. This will also help lessen back pain, knee pain and hip pain.
@@margaretmartinpt I heard that one should slightly rotate their shoulders when walking in order to promote nutrients reaching the discs and to push off your toes. Any thoughts on this?
I discovered your video about dowager's hump and now I am watching a bunch of your videos. I imagine that dowager's hump will be more prominent in the future because people walk looking at their phones so much and poor posture using the computer. I am pretty sure using poor posture at the computer led to my dowager's hump. Thank goodness it is reversible with exercises. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge to make people healthier!
I have balance issues due to a condition and walk daily on a treadmill. I do rest my arms on the handles due to my balance. I am wondering if my walks are still beneficial for my bones. I do 2.5 to three 20 minute miles a day. Thank you for the video.
Your walks are definitely still beneficial to your bones. Just make sure your posture is correct while you are walking. You're a hero walking so much every day for your health! Rock on!
I am an artist and spend a lot of time looking down at my work either sitting or standing. Is there a correct way to do this? I am 71 years old and do have bone loss, mainly in my hips.
Thank you! I'm a Nordic pole walker. I see so many out walking incorrectly if, or when they do go outside. They reject my suggestion to try poling, so I sent them your video.
According to my mom i walk very weirdly but i dont feel so she says that u keep shaking your butts while walking and that does not look appealing from back it looks weird so i searched for this video.
As I have gotten older ... I find that my hands don't swell if my arms are bent 90 degrees at the elbows so I'm "pumping" my arms with my hands in a gentle almost fist. If I drop my hands at my side ... my hands and fingers swell from the swinging and are uncomfortable by the end of the walk. are the bent arms ok?
I do. I encourage you to read my guide to Nordic Pole Walking. I think it will answer all your questions. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-exercises/nordic-walking/
Margaret Martin, Physical Therapist Thank you for quick response. I have just found your website and videos through investigating bone health exercises. I will be 63 this month and would like to stay as active and healthy as possible. I have a feeling that working through your programmes will be a very good approach for me. So thank you for making them available. Especially in this pandemic is this very helpful.
Excellent, so obvious when I can see it in action, almost all of the body was moving and rotating.... in fact there wasn’t a part of the body that was stationary.....I’m assuming this is what, and with good breathing too, gets the blood moving around the body and also shifts any areas that could potentially ’pool’ , when sitting. My question now is, I see a lot of info., videos, that saying heel walking is wrong, yet this is how I walk myself. Is there a right and wrong way for the feet to move. Much thanks. Steve U.K. 🙏
Thank you for this. One question I have is about the shoulder. After walking for about 30 minutes, my shoulders begin to ache at the back of the shoulder. It's bad enough after a while that I have to stop walking. How can I correct that?
It is likely related to your posture and/or shoulder alignment. I cannot do an assessment (you can consult a physiotherapist for that). In the absence of that, these might shed some light on the topic: ua-cam.com/video/Ki4cbURer-U/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/LN-Q-TlpWRY/v-deo.html
I started walking daily 45 minutes but after walk my lower back ache and sides also and nerves in my thighs start vibrating can u pls explain why such things happen with my body. Sry for my bad english hope you understand what I wanted to say.
Hi Connie. I encourage you to work on your balance. There are a number of balance exercises that are appropriate for you. A consultation with a Physical Therapist will be a good move on your part.
