Do you have a lego store in your area? Because if so, I would totally love to see a vlog of you getting some parts from the Pick-A-Brick wall. I just recently tried Pick-A-Brick for the first time, and absolutely loved it.
I've stopped using clips for any connection, as after a few years, even without touching the model and zero weight pressure, they just crack and got tired of replacing them. This has happened mostly to all my light grey and black clips. So, in your case, I would have used technic pins to connect the various bases.

I have two stores, but usually buy on bricklink
