Back in the day I saw the Verlaines, Yo la Tengo and Barbara Manning in a little venue in San Diego....I could not believe my great fortune! Great great band and one of their very best of many great songs!
I used to see Graham at pak n save supermarket on Saturday mornings buying chicken necks for his dog!
Singer looks a bit like mick jagger here or British rock band members from the late 60s
I think I was at this show. The Bacchanal, yes?
@@pa30fps I am not sure I recall but could be. I recall it was a great show. I was most into the Verlaines but loved all three artists. I was there with a couple people who would not stop talking and just listen which irked me as I knew I was witnessing quite a great billing/concert. Casbah, Bacchanal and Coachhouse were a few venues of the day around.
@etamommy i saw some good uns at the casbah too. Beautiful memories, lost hearing...WORTH IT
This video makes me wish I was born in Dunedin circa 1962.
1984 was my first year back down at Otago Uni in Dunedin. I WAS there. Great memories.
1981 was a good year for white Bunny Rabitts to !
Found this while searching for Schuberts Death and The Maiden String Quartet and im not disappointed
Found this while listening lol gives me a strokes vibe
in those pre- internet times,a friend pass me a casset of this band, but with a terrible sound ,and never found any album in Buenos Aires. Like a lot most of the 80's New Zealand bands. Thanks
Jane Dodd on bass playing a beautiful line....
I play in a bunch of bands with her brother John . Jane is a sweetheart
@@weehudyy she made her mark - those bass lines often were integral. Same with the band the Bats where I think the bass lines often made the songs sooooo much better.
This is one of the all time classics. If I was a more ambitious, monied, and talented man I would set out to make a documentary about everyone who appeared in this video.
At least Martin Phillips got a doco!
It's not too late mate!
a homework for school about verlaine and rimbaud and baudelaire brings me here (Y) :D
New Zealand is magic. Too many good indie bands c:
We got hobbit too, hey hey
Stuart Maxwell whatever fucko!!! Where are you from dickhead !!!
The ultimate fuck off song :#
Most of the decent independent NZ music came from Dunedin during the 80s. Although you wouldn’t think it now, it’s sadly since become a bit of a dead cultural void.
@Stuart Maxwell I’m sure that whatever dead hole you come from is worse than most of NZ, insecure troll.
I love this song. Came out when I was at high school in Dunedin
The height of coolness when I first saw this on RWP a long time ago.
Pure love for this song and Graeme's genius and the band in whatever configuration. Grateful to have seem them live in Cambridge MA USA back in the day.
Two of my favourite songs ever, this and Pink Frost from The Chills, have to listen to them every now and then. Thank you to the person who introduced me to New Zealand bands back in the 80s!
BEST POP SONG EVER.
love this 30 years later and living Cambodia.
Love this 38 years later and living in Denmark
just like me..love them since 1988. living in Germany.@@PaulLea
@@michaelmorschett5043 a Kiwi In Germany ?. just down the road from Demnark !.
For me the Verlaines were the very best group of an unfathomably rich scene
Doing the UA-cam viewing of choice NZ songs/music, a classic. Graeme Downes is a living legend!
Flying Nun one of my all-time favourite record labels. Growing up with you guys was great. Not by everyone, but I used to hate how people used to say; "they're are almost as good as an international band". I'm so glad I don't hear that much anymore. Don't know why I didn't sub years ago
You can’t be serious. People in NZ used to say that about Dunedin Sound bands?
man I love this song and the …rabbit
Just simply brilliant, timeless and god I wish I was back in Dunedin at the Crown or Empire in the early 90s!
A masterpiece, of course. What a great band!!!
My old teacher @ 4.03 , drummer w/The Chills for a while too. Obviously filmed in a uninsulated Dunedin property!
in the summer
Brings back memories....as a dj at my college radio station KSPC, I came across this, loved it. Still do. Great stuff.
The lyrics are some of the best I’ve ever heard.
Ah good memories growing up in dunners Nz shame its so fricken cold
Angus, some shots seem to be from Cargill's Castle, which is an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of Dunedin. I think it has been derelict for decades now
Juan Incognito :Yup
Shayne Carter dancing in the Window
Cringe
This sounds like 90s American indie music. The New Zealand bands were ahead of the times with their slacker vibes.
@TheWindAmongTheReeds Yeah Pavement was a rip off of the Dunedin sound.
@@TT-th3lv Pavement are still great and I'm a kiwi
@@TT-th3lv oh relax, far from a ripoff, you're just repeating what you've heard others say
We used to call it grungy. Like a grungy sound to it. Then ignorant yoof would start telling us that grunge was invented in Seattle in the 90's.
@@TT-th3lvthe pixies sounded like a verlaines rip off too but they are both so.good who cares
Classic Graeme with the cig stuck in the strings on the head of the guitar - that guitar is smoking!! (3:13)
Yep, one of my favs
one of the best from Flying Nun
Definitely Pavement copped the vocal melody of "I'm afraid you're not one of them" off "Box Elder from this tune. Nice steal!!
ua-cam.com/video/8-GqgN00Kr0/v-deo.html
First line is just classic
"You're just too....too obscure for me. You don't really get through to me". Simple honest and to the point but also a pretty good put down and somehow better if said without malice but simply as personal experience.
Love this song so much
Me too
Somehow I learned of this song through a cover by a shortlived vastly obsecure Cambridge, MA band called Prickly. They're quite different but both versions are pretty great honestly.
This pleases me.
Uma das melhores e mais criativas bandas de todos os tempos!!!
best back up dancing
🎶 I still choose to lose the way I like! 🎶
Another cool, memorable Kiwi blast from the past. Great stuff!
Amazing
Another brilliant Kiwi band that did their own thing. Love this!
Love this Song very much
Proto-Madchester, Proto-Shoegaze...Indie to da bone!!! 🖤🖤🖤
Always loved that song and clip.
yes!! perfect
Dunedin, South Island New Zealand and Flying Nun records, a very unusual palace, time and sound in human history. Right on the very edge of the map in many different ways.
Brilliant... 80s gem
Not seen: the bunnies chewing up the cords, cables, and guitars during/after filming.
dj45rpm Well you get a glimpse at 4:23 onwards
Третья новая любимая группа за последнее время и опять из Новой Зеландии :) . Первые две - The Clean and The Bats . Наверное Новая Зеландия волшебная страна в которой рождаются такие группы :)
All of my love, some of my pain
You know
amazing!
best of all time
Great song !!!
Nice upload. The Gordons should be in this mix too.
finally a proper catch of this. love it

Foda, como todo o catálogo da Flying Nun! Maravilhoso!
❤
Such an amazing tragedy. Wrote more songs than will ever be heard.. positive he's got a comfy bed up there.. much love to share with all family, friends, an fans...

God ble@ flying nun and my youth...
Fast Eddies front room.....
yes so good
1000th like, should be a million
That’s my debate coach right there!!!
Go Rob Burns!!
Still the height of coolness
excelente!
Is it my imagination, or are both Lesley Paris of Look Blue Go Purple and Caroline Easther of the Chills featured around the 4:00 mark?
I was interviewed by Graham downes when mainline music school when still in Manukau Auckland, I was his last interview before he disappeared down to Dunedin. The Dunedin Sound awesome...... I miss Chris Knox, when I was working for a radio station in Hamilton, he was playing at the hilly and our last big student orientation, he stopped in the middle of of a song and pointed at me and shouted cos I was recording about 30 seconds of his music, not for malevolent reasons just for nostalgia. I love the song Meat, one of my favorites. Another legend. R.i.p Mike Fell😢
The best pop video ever made. And not just because of the bunnies
Wish I could live back in these times when you had to actually find this music and be a part of a scene. Nowadays it’s easy to find everything on the internet. So what is even cool in this day and age anymore?
I don't know, sorry
yeas its a good one
I see the ladies from Look Blue Go Purple.
Had nothing to do with her death of the maiden but my heart went with her anyway
Better guitars then album version ... . .
I fu*king love Loraine by Bad Manners!! But this is probably some of our best from Aotearoa 🖤 I find myself singing Verlaine to Loraine!? 😔🖤💜🎶
The rabbits in the video makes it wierdly sad.
Music!
he sounds like Bowie
Those rabbits are gonna chew all your cords!!!😂🎉🎉🎉
You're just too too obscure for me
Oh you don't really get through to me
And there's no need for you to talk that way
Is there any less pessimistic things to say?
Do you like Paul Verlaine?
Is it gonna rain today?
Shall we have our photo taken?
We'll look like death and the maiden
Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine
Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine
I still choose to lose the way i like
Fool around split my lungs out of spite
But i won't reject so long as you make sense
But i'm through with the rooms and vague intentions
You shouldn't talk to me
Find better company
There's better people to know
You'll only end up like rimbaud
Get shot by
Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine
Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine
The way you think is oh-so-bloody stale
Your sanity looks pretty frail
You have to clutch at every tiny straw
And I can't stomach that at all
Do you like Paul Verlaine?
Is it gonna rain today?
Shall we have our photo taken?
We'll look like death and the maiden
Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine
Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine, Verlaine
great dunedin sound ever
Cargill's is a thriving tourist destination.... :p
another band that inspired the "dunedin sound" tag, which a lot of flying nun material was saddled with.
Cute bunny
Any chance that house in on great king street in Dunedin?
pink room is on stuart street ::: :
Hola
I know. Paul Verlaine, cod-Platonic friend of Arthur Rimbaud. And it's like I was saying.
My intellectual parents failed at being sheltering Christians who are out of style and read think geek instead of liking expert health food, modern shout tou art, and brutal metal, a better parent would always look fun, like a fat dork with at least hip shoes and allow sex, drug dealing, and drinking drugs, but also lead intellectual creative ventures to a successful momentum. There are both on the street, ultimate inept nerds, and the badass ones who have the in thing revolving around them.
BBBON SANGGGG
He's actually saying 'Verlaine.'
white stag jacket at 2:20
so cool ,where they now?
Playing in Wellington in a week or so..
wow thats cool ,they could have gone too the moon
what a pearl!
See, that's smart. Unlike George Harrison, Graeme Downes stole a part of "He's So Fine" that the Chiffons couldn't sue him for.
I speak of the 'do-lang.'
Lorraine Lorraine Lorraine Lorraine
Lorraine Lorraine Lorraine Lorraine

BULLETLPROOF
I love this song so much but what's he doing to that rabbit at 1:30?! I actually want to know plz don't murder me, is he just petting it or not?!!!
