"What are you going to do with all these newspapers?" The real question will soon be "what are we going to do when newspapers become obsolete?" Newspaper agencies ought to consider producing unprinted newspaper for projects like these, paper mache, craft projects, etc. It's a very versatile material. This was a great video and was exactly what I was looking for.. I needed an affordable solution for multiple small pots for millet seedlings I'm trying to grow from my birds' millet sprays. I need a lot of pots in order to, hopefully, grow enough sprays to sustain my birds' treats for a month.
Who are the 3 crazy people who didn't like this video? They must be the CEOs of the peat pot companies or something. This is brilliant and so simple and fast to make (which I good because I need to make a bunch and can't be meticulously folding so many). Thanks for sharing.
Very cost effective I must admit. But from what I understand, newspaper thwarts the growth of vegetation (i.e. its used as weed control in place of landscaping tarp in thrifty cases) So I guess my question is: Is it a good idea to use newspaper as a pot? Or will it hamper the development of root systems? I live in the Southern region USA, with a moderate amount of clay soil and I find even peat pots do not biodegrade fast enough during a growing season to allow for root expansion.
Cool! Are you sure that paper will break down enough to allow roots to spread? Anyway, I like the idea better than peat pots. I really like the bottom wicking water method. Looks very easy! Thanks!
Nice idea, great for starting seedlings that need a bit more space for the roots. Maby a layer of duct tape on the outside of the paper might help the container become more stable.
I was thinking to use the duct tape before it's put into the ground. Just a temporary container for the seedling. I mentioned stability since paper gets wet and weak, also water/moisture evaporates through the paper creating a greater need for water.
I also should mention that duct tape wont let the roots grow and spread out like they're supposed to do. They'll just get pot bound and stunt the growth of the whole plant and it can die. Duct tape is vinyl and that's not good for the garden/soil.
Duct tape adds more expense and it's not very biodegradable. So you're being counter productive and polluting your garden beds. The idea of this is to be inexpensive and not harming your soil and garden. I use styrofoam cups, cheap, but I don't put them in the ground. I stab small holes in the bottoms to let the water drain. I pop the plants out when ready to put outside. Styrofoam cups also don't get and stay soggy and promote mold growth on them like paper and peat pots do.
Dave, tried this and after couple of days the top of the media has fungus formed due to consistent moisture.. I am keeping this indoor.. Do we need to water the tub once it becomes dry so that fungus or mould is not formed
Hiyaaaa! Have you tried - zrumplina diy aquaponics (do a search on google)? Ive seen some great things about it and my cooworker grew amazing veggies with it.

you can buy "end of roll" from printers, some give it away

Dave - Nice video. I like how easy and quick it is. I also like that you showed the proper way to water; from the bottom. Thanks!
Great video. I've watched this video loads of times. Thanks for sharing.
That's a great idea. My grandkids will love making paper pots. Subbed you.
Great video! You inspired me to try it, and it worked out great! I uploaded my video to show how well it worked.
Thanks for the idea!
Fantastic idea. Well done Dave.
What a good idea. I just can't believe all the ideas you gardners come up with. Thanks for showing us=-}
Wow, really great idea - and organic too!
Awesome idea, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for a great video! This is exactly what I was looking for and you made it easy to understand.
I grow microgreens in newspaper pots and highly recommend it.
Thanks for the video! I am going to try making these for next seasons seedlings.
Nice project 👌🏾!

Roger H it’s used to block light. Nothing about newsprint inhibits growth.
Thankyou i will try this i was very impressed with how quickly the seeds germinated.....
Great idea! Thanks Dave
Thank you so much very informative and yay you dont need that expensive pot maker to make these.

Hey well done nice ;)
Look up capillary action, it soaks up the water from the bottom and brings it up through the paper and soil. Water when the paper is almost dry again.
Love it, thanks!
Excelente idea..gracias

how fun. Paper pots are cool!

I love this! Thank you.
Great!!!
Great idea
thanks man.fast and easy
Will this work with my old VCR tapes, too?
What about mold? Toilet paper rolls have a big mold issue in my experience
newspapers will degrade in soil right?

amazing!!!!
I didn't get it completely. You put 1/2 inch of water and it will soak all the way too the top? How often do you water the plants.
Good on you mate, thanks for the video.
bloody great hole in bottom....I call that a tube! lol
then adjust placement, I did

With only 1 paper thin aren't these pots going to biodegrade and fall apart with 1 week or so?
my small ones are holding strong 3 weeks in; also you can do 2 sheets BUT the bottom gets tricky but once you get some moist dirt in it it's fine.
SO probably not for my plants that need 6 weeks :(
littleblessings momma we just made the square ones and they are perfect! try those asap! i'll never buy pots again.
ok thanks

Use a fan for air circulation or put it somewhere drafty.
Thanks!

What about the hole in the bottom?!
Sweet.
Great!
If you bury the pots, how are we supposed to be able to read it then???
I really like this video. I've made my own video about making paper pots if anyone wants to check it out. Thanks for sharing.
OHHH AWESOME TY
Why didn't I think of that?
Thanks
Don't worry about the ink, it is soy based in 99% of newspapers
grandbaby time
Tom, Dick and Harry became a Pejorative. Dave can mean the opposite.
I wish I could heard these instructions, the music is so loud the voice is drowned out!
You hear music? Time to see a doctor.
3:20 420 ;D
