    I went to a seminar on how to write a resume and cover letter, and one of the speakers said that the shorter the better. They are reading these all day, so be concise, and sell yourself in less than three paragraphs. I implemented this strategy and actually got in the door for interviews much more frequently than I did when I tried to expand my cover letter to be one full page.
    Remember: your cover letter is explaining why you are awesome and perfect for the job. (actual quote from a hiring manager)

    From my job searching experience and talking to "head-hunters," short cover letters for businesses are in now. Long, full page ones are a thing of the past. Half page absolute max. No on wants to read life stories these days. I had no luck for two months with a long form cover letter that I was taught in school, then shrank it down and had three interviews within the week.

    Another good tip and a question that employers want to know is your availability. Especially if you're a student who cannot work full-time or part-time, it's good to let them know in advance. This demonstrates that you're organised enough to manage your time and are able to prioritise. Good luck everyone! I'm still trying to find a job too but in the meantime, I'm back at uni and working part-time.

      How/where would you include this in the cover letter? I think this is a great tip, just having trouble implementing it!

    • @FantashticIdeas
      @FantashticIdeas 9 років тому

      Probably towards the end of the letter because it's not as important as other parts. Or slip it in where you are describing/listing some of the qualities which highlight that you are the right candidate for the job. Best of luck! :D

    Having both your cover letter and your CV as an attachment actually has its advantages; it gives you control over how the letter will look (use a pdf, not a doc file!), and it makes it easier for them to archive your application. Also, putting your letter and CV in the same file saves them time. Plus, a lot of companies print the applications anyway, and a properly formatted letter looks much more professional than a printed e-mail. That being said, do write a brief, polite note in the body of your e-mail to say that you're applying for that job and that your letter and CV are attached.
    (Mind you, that's this bit of Western Europe. Might very well be completely different there...)

    Great video!!! When it comes to addressing your cover letter, be sure to read the job requirements thoroughly... Often times, employers will tell you who to address your cover letter to. The job I hold now, only 1 applicant did that. They absolutely notice, and it lets them know how well you pay attention to detail/follow directions.

    THANK YOU for this. This video came at the perfect time as I am applying for a million and one internships and most of the companies just as for a resume and cover letter. Resumes are not a problem for me. I have never written a cover letter so I was starting to panic. This video really calmed me down. Again, thank you.

    You might want to address the growing shift in many companies' application processes to apply via their website, completing their specific templates. Many companies no longer provide information as to who might be reviewing the application and/or reading the cover letter, offer no link to a specific person/office/department to follow up with, and some even specifically ask you not to.
    Most application processes that are done through an online medium/site have a program that reviews resumes and cover letters for very specific words and phrases and many qualified applicants will be turned away for not having the right combination of said words/phrases.
    I am currently struggling against this, even though I have employees and company officers that are specifically requesting and recommending me for a position, I can't get into an interview until I "qualify" according to the software that reviews my application.

    ...although, I would like some advice on what to write when there isn't a specific company you're applying to. For example, if you're going to start tutoring people's children on your own with no prior experience?

    My company is currently recruiting for an intern to replace me (I had a year's internship) and I get to be involved in the process of hiring them which is great. If there's one tip I can offer that you didn't exactly mention is that if you're asked for a covering letter...please send a letter and not just a paragraph...you'd be amazed at how many people don't take the time and it is very off-putting!

Sure, not every employer will read them, but it is your job to impress the ones that do with a unique cover letter designed specifically to get their attention!

    I, am having a bit of a problem. I. know I am supposed to write down work experience, and something about the company, but I am sure they would not want to see, something like: I, have never worked a day in my life, and I have no job experience to speak of. So I have a question about what I should write.

    • @Ngcarson1337
      @Ngcarson1337 8 років тому

      +ryan derksen I'm sure you've had experience with volunteer work, helping family and friends, or other relevant experience. If you bend your words enough, you can make it sound professional and appealing. Keep in mind though, most entry level jobs you're applying for (since you've not worked a day in your life) may not even want a cover letter.

      What if you have no experience because of your disability/ mental health issues and need to explain holes in your CV because of it? Sure I can mention some experience helping family and friends, but that's it...

    • @CookieKorney
      @CookieKorney 8 років тому +3

      I've heard that it's very common for people to have holes in their CVs and that you aren't less likely to be hired because of it.Though they'll probably ask questions about it on the interview. And if they do ask, be honest but try to "keep it positive". Instead of saying "I've been sick", talk about how you've been fighting your depression/anxiety/(insert mental health issue here) and how it's made you a stronger person :)
      If you don't have any work experience focus on showing them how passionate you are about the job and their company! And mention other qualities you have! It's also possible to take examples from school, e.g. "I've helped a lot of friends with their homework and they say I'm very pedagogic" (if it's relevant for the job you're applying to, obviously).

    But what do you do when you DON'T know who to address it to? For example, some places DO NOT want any contact from applicants beyond their cover letter/resume until after the company has called them for an interview. Or there's someone who reviews applications before sending them higher up or to another department entirely.

    So two things in regards to the internship I recently applied for & cover letters: (1) they stated in a FAQ section on their website that if I wasn't applying to a specific department that i should address my cover letter to "Dear Sir/Madam". Still ok in this situation? (2) In the job posting, they stated the dates between which applicants would be contacted by the company. What would have been a good alternative to your suggestion?

    • @euerz
      @euerz 8 років тому +3

      Call the company's main phone number and tell them you've written a job application for a position with them, and was wondering if they could be so kind as to tell you where to send in the application. If they say they have a hiring manager who deals with that, ask them to be so kind as to provide the manager's contact info to you so you can get in touch and send your application.
      The point is be polite and clear about your plan and what you need from the person you're talking to. A bit long since you posted this, but good luck regardless to anyone else reading this!

    Honestly, titles like mr. and ms. aren't really appropriate. They're fiercely exclusionary to trans* individuals and set an assumption towards a person's gender that can be uncomfortable. Keep in mind this is not information you're likely to find online and any information on gender you find face-public, such as in an employee bio or in the news is often suspect or wrong. Using a full name should be acceptable as a listed name is generally something someone is comfortable being referred to. This can be an even worse problem if you make an assumption about gender of a neutral name, because it can come off as insulting.
