I’m a total Home Assistant junkie. And more recently going harder on my ham radio stuff, I’m getting more comfortable and confident with soldering. This kind of project is exactly what I want to take on. Presence sensors are so much more useful to me than motion sensors, and have become the foundation of some of my most useful automations. I’ve got the 3D printer but need to pick up enough 3D design skills to be dangerous. I think if you kept going with this, compressed your design down to a single pc board, there’s enough room in the market for someone else to sell ESPhome sensors! It’d be a nice additional way to monetize your content in a totally non toxic kind of way. Also PS this is my first time on your channel and def subscribing. Cheers!
Thank you so much! There are a couple of things that I think would make a good product that I’ve made, and I’m exploring those options, but I am still in the process of learning the knowledge I need to make those things.
We watching the same video? You didn't notice completely unconnected pin at 3:54? There's literally just a ball on the pin, not touching the pad. Get your eyes checked, mate.
I would add some physical separation between the temperature sensor and the rest to make sure that the heat generated by the esp32 won't be biasing the readings. Also, the bme680 is just estimating the co2 reading, not actually measuring it.
They need that in Japan where people die alone in apartments and are not fpund for 3 weeks or more. So if there is no motion in the bathroom or kitchen for 3 days energency services is notified. Good for people over 60.
Your videos are making me want to set up home automation more and more. I'd been lookin at air quality sensors, but adding that millimeter wave sensor would be so useful too!
Nice! I got an EP1 this month and it’s pretty awesome! I built a self-built one using a Seeed Studio MMWave sensor in a 3d printed Gonk from starwars! He lives in my kids room and turns off the lights when nobody is around because he’s got all the govee unicorn vomit and always forgets to turn it off!
i need to have a play with one of these presence sensors. human proximity detection fitted into a droid to trigger animation sequences would give a nice illusion of ai
Great project and you made it look particularly simple.. I can imagine the real world use scenatios for such devices as this remarkble gadget has still an long way to go beyond smart home integration and automation...It has many possibilities that are stiil yet to be explored all thanks to DF Robot...!!
Great video! And very reminiscent of the original EP1 video I did that led me to making it in the first place! Btw, we finally have great stock of the Lite haha, been difficult to keep it in stock! Also a quick note regarding the PIR in the EP1, it's not actually used for just the same function, but it can greatly assist in certain environments and add a lot of flexibility for detection, which is the real reason for including it on the EP1. Keep up the good work!
Oh wow, thank you! 🙏 I’m currently working on a project that’s destined for the bin because it doesn’t wanna work, so this comment is a big morale booster thank you!
60GHz sensors can tell heart rate, distance, do fall detection, etc... normal mmwave ones are 24ghz (if they're good, if they're less than 24ghz, don't touch 'em)
As a parent of young children (and a maker), I like this "ability to sense breathing". It means I can get an alert if my child stops breathing for instance, or has difficulty.
The PIR on the EP1 is great for avoiding false positives on the mmwave in larger rooms. PIR to turn the lights on, mmwave to turn them off, perfection. Oh and the DFRobot sensor in the EP1 doesn't support zones, but I guess you found that out by now 😁
Very cool project! I must make one like that too! Mine will autodetect if there is anyone in the bathroom and show with a red led if it's occupied. Btw: Where do you buy your silicon wiring?
I’ve mentioned it in a previous comment, but it’s actually not a good design. Putting the sensor that high up makes it very difficult for it to detect shorter people I recommend around waste height. I actually have a video coming out on Monday explaining it
It should be able to detect cats and dogs. I don’t think you can distinguish between them. And you can have it outside, just put it in a waterproof enclosure.
In most cases where I’ve tried IR sensors, they suck. A little bit of sunlight through the window is going to trigger them constantly. Also they don’t have the range of a mmwave sensor, this one can detect you from 24 m away.
Hello bro I need your help it's a sensor that can sence even static and motion both ok I need that circuit diagram and also I want to add here cloud interface system to control remotely over internet anywhere in the World
I would but I don’t actually recommend it, it’s made to be up high. Which I now know is not where you want to put a mmwave, it’s not very good at detecting shorter people. So you’re better off putting it about knee high.
i can buy some EP1's, or the apollo, but they are 50 bucks, especially with shipping. I'd rather make my own for 20 bucks. but i have to find out what exists.
The reason this DIY setup can't use a coin battery like some other sensors is due to higher power consumption. Beetle ESP32-C3: ~160 mA at 3.3V mmWave Sensor: ~3.5 mA at 3.3V BME680 Sensor: ~3.1 mA at 3.3V Total Power Consumption: ~165 mA A CR2032 coin battery (220 mAh) would only last about 1.2 hours with this setup. The Aqara Presence Sensor, also uses a wire due to similar power needs. Despite initial concerns my partner, quickly appreciate the functionality and benefits of this sensor.
Your soldering skills are as good as I have seen anywhere on youtube. But for the love of god, I can't understand you make a 3D printed case, but don't put your components on some perf-board.
That humor towards the end, H I L A R I O U S!!!!! Subbed!

Those soldering shots were 🔥
So refreshing to see good soldering on a diy video!
Glad you liked it! Thank you 🙏

Oh yes the Vin pin, I did go back to fix that.
"because i asked them very nicely. So perhaps i should thank them very nicely." That was fun to watch

Your parts bins are effervescent and so fabulous 🌈
Glad you like them!
Thanks for exposing me to this. That's almost magical hardware.
Great video and humour!

Do you know where we can buy the Asian guy?

Not sure that allowed anymore these days. But if build a time machine ...
Have you heard of "Amazon Mechanical Turk" ?
Out of stock since December 18, 1865.
There is a way to make your own though.
@@rkgaustin the home DIY kit has been sold sadly

So this is what they used in Alien to detect the movement. Got it! ;)

One of the best on youtube!

They added the updated BSEC2 a couple versions ago that supports all the modern ESP32s!!!
OMG, thank you for telling me!!
As a parent of young children (and a maker), I like this "ability to sense breathing". It means I can get an alert if my child stops breathing for instance, or has difficulty.
Well no, not like that. It is able to sense breathing, but not exclusively breathing. Any movement will do so it’s not of much use for this purpose.
If the kids are still, I'm concerned and my parental instincts kick in. @@meeskees702

Yeah also don't have the mounted up high, It won't recognise short people.
Impressive response time!
You got me at "sick".
Which one I saw it quite often 😂
I actually got tired of myself saying it during the open sauce live stream 😂😂
Haha, after you test the sensor for the first time and step towarda your deak
Wow, I had no idea soldering fetish was a thing! 😂
Nice project and the coding installation looks very simple.
An almost unrelated question: what gauche of wiring did you use inside the box?
its 28awg Silicone Electrical wire, I actually went over how much I like it in a previous video.
@@Mellow_labs I must have must that. Thanks :)

Get some smart light bulbs from Lidl.
The color ones are like 10 bucks if you get the 3 pack :)
I would be interested in seeing the configuration of zones and multiple people detection. Maybe an idea for a next video?
Sadly I learned after the fact that these particular mmWave sensors don’t do zones.
Sooo cool and inspiring 🏳️🌈
dis i must do maybe. i'm bit jealous of u getting free parts
Great video, are you going to upload your case by chance?

@@Mellow_labs Tks!
2 things that confuse my sensors, cats and big moths....
Cats confuse everyone, I think it's their reason for existing, that and knocking stuff off things.
Um. You misspelled "presence" in the thumbnail my friend! Awesome project as always!
There are 3 versions of the thumbnail, maybe you just got the one with the intentional misspelling 😂😂
@@Mellow_labs u GOT ME!!!!
I bought an EP Lite... its an absolute PIG to set up on home assistant for setting zones etc
Show me one with a 0 to 10volt output I can hook to my Arp it sounds like a great controller. Maybe midi out.
A simple IR sensor cant do the same? or what's the rocket science behind this ?

I would recommend looking at DFrobots new mmWave sensor C1001 it’s a much better version of the one I used.

Why can't this be used like those that uses coin batteries? e.g. aqara sensor
That wire will definitely not pass spouse approval.
