    This is a wonderful video, but there is more to the story. It's not just that the oceans are getting warmer (causing coral bleaching) but they are getting more acidic and this decreases the ability of corals and shell building organisms to build their homes. The pH of seawater is a crucial factor because these organisms need calcium carbonate, CaCO3, in order to survive. Elizabeth Kolbert explains it like so: "Adding carbonic acid to the water complicates their efforts, because it reduces the number of carbonate ions in circulation. Practically, it means shrinking the supply of material available for shell formation.(Imagine trying to build a house when someone keeps stealing your bricks.) Once the carbonate concentration gets pushed low enough, even existing shells begin to dissolve." So what we really need to do is not to produce new types of corals, but to stop emitting extreme amounts of CO2. That is what I thinks anyways...

    • @besmart
      @besmart  9 років тому

      +birdsmeet Acidification is definitely covered in the video! Everyone should read Elizabeth Kolbert's work on this stuff, though.

      +birdsmeet Another thing is all the oxygen that algies and the coral reefes are making will dissapate, lowering the amount of oxygen and in turn ozone. Due to the fact that our best UV-protection is now gone we will get hit by alot of radiation, and in turn lead to the earth beeing mutants!! (supermutants in Fallout here i come)

      Apparently *It's Okay to be Misinformed.*
      Much of what is known about reef response to temperature and pH comes from laboratory experiments. That is, from changing the conditions in an aquarium to see how the ecosystem responds. Many in the ocean acidification research community recognize that this is really just a stress test that does not simulate real-world ecosystem adaptation.
      Reefs in the real world are not restricted to a fixed ecosystem. As one species declines, another that is better adapted can move in. Reefs around the world exist at many different temperatures and pH levels, each having an ecosystem adapted to those conditions. For example a recent study of Palau found that despite having a natural pH far lower than any anticipated acidification, it has a very diverse and thriving reef ecosystem - it's a haven for recreational divers. advances.sciencemag.org/content/1/5/e1500328
      The denizens of the reefs have been around for millions of years and survived a wide range of temperature and pH. In all likelihood, reefs won't disappear as organisms die off, they will just gradually change as different organisms migrate in while existing ones radiate out to areas better suited to them. If temperatures do start increasing again, we may see coral reefs expand their range into higher latitudes. We'll see more reefs not fewer.
      In the popular media bleaching is treated as evidence of coral death. Coral is just a rock created by coral polyps on its surface. Bleaching is in reality a vacancy of the coral which will eventually be repopulated with coral polyps and continue growing again. Periodic coral bleaching is natural.

    One thing your video made me curious about is why the coral is "kicking out" their algae friends.
    You did a stellar job explaining their symbiotic relationship, but didn't really draw the connection between the ocean's rapidly changing climactic conditions and coral bleaching.

    Coral is so beautifully symbiotic. It can even be used to graft with human bone, and it doesn't stunt the patient's growth nor create protuberances. It's absolutely wonderful. And unlike bone marrow from donors, there's no chance of the body rejecting it as there is no conflict of blood type.
    Because coral does not rely on blood. The only thing I have to question is will the coral be able to help produce blood as the rest of the skeletal system does, be effective at doing so, or be passively inert to this process altogether?

    What a coincidence!? I just wrote an 8 page research paper about the effects of humans on coral reefs. I hope I get a good grade! There are corals in the Persian Gulf that can withstand the rising temperatures, but will run out of room to grow. This is due to corals not having enough aragonite sea bedding from the effects of ocean acidification.

    research from the university of quensland suggests that Porites cylindrical, a species of coral found in the Heron island lagoon and on the great barrier reef can protect itself from ocean acidification by a producing a neutralizing fluid. Also, some research suggests that the origin of life could not have been in water as once thought as it prevents RNA from forming, this is backed by lab research which has found that a much more ideal starting solvent for life would be formamide.

      +Simo Puttonen Cows fart out a lot of methane, which is a very potent greenhouse gas, so there is some truth to it. I have heard that the quantity of gas is comparable to some other major contributing sectors. However something to keep in mind is that the gas is coming from the fact that they ate plants which had to absorb atmospheric carbon to grow, so to a certain extent it's offsetting. This kind of gets lumped in with the response to the common climate denier point that our carbon emissions is only a small fraction of emissions due to plant decomposition, cellular respiration, etc on earth. The difference is in one case it's part of a cycle, in the case of fossil fuels you're releasing carbon which had been sequestered in the Earth.
      Now technically the plants probably absorb mostly CO2 which then gets ultimately converted to methane so it may not be totally neutral. I'd be curious to see what the math is on that.
      I'm quite sure there's some youtube videos on this. I think minute physics did one.

    • @besmart
      @besmart  9 років тому +47

      +Simo Puttonen There's no single reason behind climate change, but industrial agriculture is definitely a big contributor, all the way from the farming of grain to feed the animals to the "methane emissions" that come out of the back of cows. There's no easy answers to this stuff, but it shouldn't be ignored.

    • @MeisterFurball
      @MeisterFurball 9 років тому +2

      +It's Okay To Be Smart Sorry to be that smart ass to mention that most of the methane actually comes out of the FRONT of the cow through burps rather than farts!

    • @MeisterFurball
      @MeisterFurball 9 років тому +3

      According to researchers at New Zealand’s largest Crown Research Institute, AGResearch, up to 95 percent of the emissions comes from the cow’s mouth rather than its behind. It’s estimated, through whichever orifice, that each individual cow lets out between thirty and fifty gallons of methane per day. With an estimated 1.3 to 1.5 billion cattle in the world today, this adds up fast.

      Hmm what a coincidence that all these things happen right when humans are putting a mass load of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere... What a coincidence...

    • @gary_beniford
      @gary_beniford 9 років тому

      SusannePlays there are not more natural disasters more storms get reported though now that we have radar/satellites to see them. extinction is a natural part of life new species are always evolving and old ones dying off. also the human population is greater than ever and you mentioned deforestation. habitat loss is far more likely the reason for species becoming endangered than rising CO2 levels.

    KNOWN, hydrothermal vents put out way more CO2 than humans. We are quite arrogant to think that we can have any lasting effect on a system so rubust and evolved through millennia of celestial bombardment and internal upheaval. The system will eventually evolve a mechanism to counteract any minuscule impact we think we have. With all our complex capabilities, to this day we can't determine if it is going to rain tomorrow or not. We have NO idea what we are talking about when it comes to a system of such scale and complexity as the earth an we should just stfu about it and fix something more pressing. Besides the sun is going to explode eventually and incinerate the earth anyway.

      +The VSO Gun Channel The sun isnt going to explode, its going to expand and make life on earth impossible, but that is billions of years away. Weather and climate are two different things and climate change is happening.

    • @111asel
      @111asel 9 років тому +1

      +The VSO Gun Channel the problem is that the sea takes in the same amount of CO2 as the world puts in, so it's balanced, yet our contribution is not as easily balanced because the sea has already taken in a lot of CO2 and may not have space for much more. This allows CO2 levels to rise, causing the temperature to increase. We can have a lasting effect on this planet. Just look at how low fossil fuels are running.

      You are right, but what is indeed no coincidence is, that the elementary composition of the average cell and ocean water are nearly identical. There are a few differences (especially Al3+, which is quite puzzling), bu the similarities are stunning and more or less proof, where life initially developed.

    It sounds like each country represented in Paris will just be making a "pledge" regarding their own emissions, so why there has to be such an expensive conference I don't know. At least with pledges, countries can drop out one by one in the future when physicists confirm that force fields like gravity form an autonomous temperature gradient, so there's no "33 degrees of warming" to be done mostly by water vapor making rain forests 50 degrees hotter. The temperature gradient is already proven to exist with experiments with centrifugal force, so we're getting there, because gravity acts in the same way on molecules between collisions. Nesta4815 that's what I'm saying. It's not a mineral and it's not a plant. It falls under "animal." Read any biology book. Coral and sponges are the only animals that are asexual reproducers but they are still JUST animals. You can't be an animal AND PLANT. You are one or the other. Also, calling it a mineral is just flat out wrong.

    • @Nesta4815
      @Nesta4815 9 років тому +5

      +Lyviiz lol so you didn't watch the video. It's an animal. That has a symbiotic relationship with a plant. And it produces a mineral. So the coral reef is all three things. Obviously no organism can be a plant and an animal

      Nesta4815 coral reefs are ECOSYSTEMS so of course they will have all three! He did not fully explain that in the video. He implied that the coral itself is all of that thing. Now kids who watch these videos will misunderstand and think coral is some sort of super organism.

    I love humanities hegemonic and megalomaniacal view of how the Earth should be after having only been here for a ridiculously short amount of time. Has science somehow determined that the climate of the Earth never changed until the dawn of man? Do the smaller plants hate the larger forests for using up "their" supply of Carbon Dioxide and filling the atmosphere full of oxygen?

    • @Ahuc899
      @Ahuc899 9 років тому +2

      +Jamie Hitt You've done an excellent job of attempting to not understand the problem. We're not concerned about climate change because the current climate is "how the Earth should be...". We're concerned because how the Earth is right now is a particularly good set-up for us because for the most part it's accommodating to our infrastructure, agriculture, etc. and we'd prefer to keep it that way, or at least not actively change it.

    • @JamieHitt
      @JamieHitt 9 років тому

      Ahuc899 I completely understand what you are saying and even agree. But the correct way of looking at it is that we need to affect climate change. We need to "change" the pattern or trend that is taking place. We need to "arrest" this development while our climate is still in a position to keep us all alive and happy. Scientifically speaking, I don't really care what is causing it. We only need to determine the cause(s) so we can determine the correct solution(s). We all agree that the data shows a pattern of warming and cooling across the timeline. We are in a period of warming. Human activity is slightly accelerating this warming. But the jury is still out on whether we can slow it back down or even stop it. Every intelligent human on Earth knows we are warming. The only question is how much of a role is humanity playing in this. It's the biggest nature vs. nurture example in history...lol.

    • @Ahuc899
      @Ahuc899 9 років тому +1

      Jamie Hitt I think you're understating how much we know about current climate change. You're correct that we are generally in a warming phase on the range of 1000s of years, but it's pretty generally well accepted that the vast majority of warming over the past couple hundred years is due to us (or at the very least there's no natural phenomenon which could explain it).

    • @JamieHitt
      @JamieHitt 9 років тому

      Ahuc899 Well, there's nothing like an industrial revolution and mass deforestation to knock things outta whack. Would be nice if the planet had some sort of dormant gene that had dealt with humanity in the distant past and could activate to heal itself...lol.

    • @PDionneGosselin
      @PDionneGosselin 9 років тому

      +Fenton Bevan He never argued againts it. But yeah one of the best solution. Although we have to be carefull. Cloud seeding, or dumping reflective particulate will have to be limited. If we increase the amount of light reflected into space over areas with large amounts of plant life, that could be bad. Also this will not fix rising acidity. Dumping iron in the ocean is probably one of the best idea.
      It's a shame how so many people will drop great solutions because it does not look good. Nuclear power, burning waste, gmos, geo engineering, etc. These could fix so much.
