The funniest thing is that a season or two later, when Julia is audited by Ray Don, and she doesn't remember who he is, Charlene, trying to remind her, recites Julia's complete speech to Ray Don verbatim, and complete with Dixie vocal inflections.
I think it was only a few episodes later (the audit). They would run into Ray Don again in season 2 when Suzanne's life savings are stolen & she gets in trouble with the IRS.
I can imagine Michael Kelso of "That 70's Show" being at that Japanese restaurant, eyewitnessing Julia's in-your-face comments to Ray Don, and yelling "Burn!" #LOL
No wonder *EVERYONE* tells me I'm *ALWAYS* going all *Julia Sugarbaker* whenever I get on a roll!! My *FIRST* time seeing any of these clips and, yes, I'm *DEFINITELY* a *Mrs. Julia Sugarbaker!* I will wear this nickname proudly for the rest of my life, after watching ALL of these & even finding full episodes elsewhere!! Classic show!!
That is most definitely a compliment. Lol. And what’s funny is, the other characters on the show would later begin to tease her about her soap box rants. Lol.
It's so iconic I find myself at the Walmart u-scan & when the machine says Thank you for shopping Walmart, , I say...and I want to thank you too Ray Don! I said it out loud by mistake one time & the lady checking out next to me fell out laughing & said Alright Julia! We had a good laugh.🤣
Julia's rants are truly legendary! This has to be one of my favorites! And the dig at Suzanne is priceless too! The two actresses started this kind of biting, snippy on-screen relationship in a previous, short lived series from 1982 called "Filthy Rich" which I was always sorry never made it past the first season. In one episode, they are looking for some kind of service and Delta's ditzy character Kathleen said she would go look through the phone book to find it, and Dixie's character Carlotta says to (Let Marshall do it, he doesn't have to sing the alphabet song." (Marshall being Carlotta's husband in the show) Some of the insults in that show were quite stinging! Both actresses had such good sarcastic delivery!
I have been looking for this video for I don't even know how long. This is my FAVORITE Julia Sugarbaker clip and I cannot express to you how thankful I am to you for having uploaded it.
Yep. And she tries to hide her face from him while he tries to figure out how he knows her. She made the mistake of saying "And I want to thank you, Ray Don," as he was leaving and he realized then who she was.
That was really funny too how she made it to the end then let it slip...& I want to thank you too Ray Don & he said that's it! Great comedy is never forgotten. I was at a Walmart u-scan & when the machine said thank you for shopping Walmart. I said (I thought only to my kids) & I want to thank you too Ray Don. The lady next to me fell out laughing & ssid Way to go Julia! We had a great laugh about it.🤣
Yes Miss Julia sugarbaker thank you exactly know what women really go through when we go out and a man text upon their self you think they were helpless we cannot enjoy each other's company so they assume we need a man around and you towed The Raid John off the male industry how we women do not appreciate their opinion on what we should do
+SweptAway529 This is a pilot. Keep in mind that they there are SOME continuity errors in every sitcom. Sometimes, what's said in the pilot isn't always used throughout the series in the end.
Agreed, but there's also an episode later in season one where Charlene has aspirations of becoming a country singer and her whole family comes down to Atlanta to see her perform. As Charlene is introducing the whole clan, including their spouses and children, to her co-workers, there's not a Carlene in the bunch.
Is Ray Don portrayed by actor Barry Corbin here? There's no reference listed in the credits of this episode. I think the character was portrayed by two different actors...
Of course you have to wash Designing Women do you need to download it and you'll see what I'm talking about the show is really about Julia Sugarbaker a lot more she should be the first woman president of the United States this is the character the personality we need to run for president thank you very much have a nice day

@@ericandy88 And Ray Don recites the line....lol
And I would like to thank YOU, Ray Don....
...and the way she poises herself, as she does her version of the haughty "Julia voice". Hilarious delivery!
"AND I WANT TO THANK YOU RAY DON." This line will forever be embedded in my mind as classic true comedy!!! 😝😝😝
Same here!!
The way her eyes widen just a little bit as she says "I want to thank you, Rrray Don." Dixie had this role perfected from day 1. 😂
Yesss!! The same, here! 💯😂
@@LiirThropp2687Yes, what I said also, at :50!
In a later episode, Charlene imitates Julia doing this speech, and it's hilarious.
Aww, julia's very first speech.

The first of many many MANY epic Terminator speeches! Godspeed Julia Sugarbaker!
This was my favorite show ever! It was truly groundbreaking.
I wish I could do Julia style when the situation calls for it!

@@LG-kx8xl I would do anything for Julia to learn from the terminator annihilation master she is to learn how to roast others like her
When I hear people talking about the show Ray Donovan on Showtime, I hear Julia's voice saying Ray Don.
this... still love it, still remember it, after all these years. Dixie Carter - the legend.
And I wanna thank you Ray Don
The first victim of "The Terminator."

The way Julia's eyes widen a little as she says "Rrray Don". Danger, Ron! Back away slowly! 😂😂
God, I love this woman!
This is from the pilot ep. The best line from this ep is "Suzanne, if sex were fast food, there would be an arch over your bed."

Mine too!
I luv this 1 the best Ray-Don!!!I ' be recited this one fire years, thanks Dixie!!!
One of my favorite clips
As great as this is, and I love Julia, I also love how this comes back to bite her in the butt farther down the road.
Yep. And she tries to hide her face from him while he tries to figure out how he knows her. She made the mistake of saying "And I want to thank you, Ray Don," as he was leaving and he realized then who she was.
And comes downstairs wearing a headscarf and huge sunglasses. One of Julia's funniest moments.

Charlene: I mean you annihilated him Julia, now we're all gonna die.
Even Suzanne admonished her for it
Tell him off, Julia! :)
Unfortunately, that speech came right back and bite Julia...twice!
I forget just how mousy Mary Jo was in the very beginning. She sure grew into her own.
Yay Julia!!!
I love it..I wish I could see a group of women do this to some loser in real life!!! LMAO

Charlene somehow forgot about her sister Carlene in this scene!

No - the characters were sisters, Carlene being the younger sister. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designing_Women#Main_cast
Darlene is Charelene, lol sis!!the more I know.

Pilot episode
sweet
Can you upload Mary Jo’s first date at the ending scene when Ray don finally recognizes Julia?
Ray Don = J. Don
🤣 YES
1:25 1:26 1:27 annihilate means destroy and defeat
Doesn’t it also mean roasting or putting someone in their place?
She's right. He's "That guy".
Here have a Whorederve lol
😂😂😂
She forgot to mention the sister Carlene.
1:44 Here, have a whore d'oeuvre 😂☠️
The entire scene falls apart when she puts her purse on the table top. I mean no southern woman would ever do that at a restaurant.

Arlen Dean Snyder played Ray Don in three episodes, including the pilot.

If he opened with a disgusting pick up line, then her speech would have been necessary. But he didn't say anything rude. She was just being a tyrant
He was arrogant "you ladies look like you NEED a little male companionship", then sits down without asking them.
