    "We know that there are those five basic tastes, but we strongly suspect that there are more."
    Thank you! I find it really difficult to accept that the complexity of flavors I experience is just a combo of salt, sweet, sour, bitter, umami.

    • @boaz2816
      @boaz2816 3 роки тому

      I think it may very well be possible that there are more types of flavour receptors, but as briefly discussed in this video, the way we experience all those different tastes is probably also formed by sensory information from different types of receptors (sight, touch, smell etc) and the interpretation in our brain formed by all those connections and higher brain functions.

    • @TheLivirus
      @TheLivirus 3 роки тому +1

      @@boaz2816 Yes, I agree. Sometimes intuition isn't the best guide. A typical analogy is our perception of colors. We can trick our brain to perceive any visible wavelength of EM radiation using only three discrete wavelengths, as exploited in RGB displays. The reason is our perception of colors is based on the relative activation of only three receptors, each of which responds to a certain overlapping range of wavelengths.

    Having undergone cancer radiation treatments in the throat + base of tongue area : it compromised taste buds - saliva production to a great extent , of course all affecting food enjoyment level - SO I started enjoying food tastes by simply remembering what it did taste like when I had them previously, also enjoying taste by SMELLING odors, and through my friend eating his meal with enjoyment = we have all kinds of extra-sensory abilities, still to be explored !!

    I had the same theory but as a teenager i wasn’t sure so i checked on UA-cam and found this video. It’s funny that the brain is similar but always works or think differently yet it looks like most other brains. I’m happy the brain gives us things like, opinions, ideas and more. Because it creates our personality and makes us different. Because everyone is different, even if our body and organs are the same, we all are different, and different is good, it makes us, who we are. (This kinda turned into a motivation comment but good video!)

As an obese American (formerly morbidly obese, currently recovering from bilateral latissimus dorsi breast reconstruction as of 10/23/19, after bilateral mastectomy after surviving HER2+ IDC w/Mets Stage 3, Class C and Type 2 Diabetic) my diseases are in full remission. I was a sugar addict. No longer. My husband and I just enjoyed a couple of tablespoons of my homemade Ketogenic-friendly vanilla praline crunch ice cream made with vanilla beans/seeds, egg yolks, heavy cream and Keto-friendly sweetener. Vanilla does NOT taste sweet, but the sweetness IS associated with sweet. I use an 1/8 of the amount of sweetener (compared to how I used to make full-sugar ice cream), but it’s delicious, rich and satisfying...but no longer cravable by our brains...there’s no sugar addiction.

Take butter for instance, yes, it may be salty, or sweet or spicy hot or not, but the way it melts on the tongue and the feel of the oiliness. We sense it's oil, fat or grease ~

    As much as I love biochemistry: I would leave this one to nature. Additives already became a problem for public freedom's, as to did shirts and waistlines. Now- you want to enhance the taste of food some more? I can see this becoming a serious problem as soon as some greedy company gets the results back from this research. Rather than help people by fooling their senses, one could, possibly, reduce the production of such foods to begin with while simultaneously reducing waste and pollution?
    Or you know what: Make vegetables taste like chicken and cleanse the world once and for all!

    • @roro-mm7cc
      @roro-mm7cc 5 років тому +4

      its this bizarre and widely held myth that just because something is natural it is more healthy than something artificial .. this is not the case at all we have plenty of natural chemicals that are bad and artificial chemicals that are benign or even good for you.. after all - all nature is is just chemistry.. a complex mixture of chemicals which themselves can be isolated. There are things that are terrible for you found in plants eg morphine and heroin are natural found in opium poppies. We need to get away from this myth that something being natural is inherently better for you.. its just not true. When you realise this, the huge potential benefits to society by eliminating sugar from diet by making 0 calorie but safe alternatives would be incredible.. like next level amazing - the biggest killer in the world is sugar.. billions of people have died from diseases caused by excessive sugar consumption. eg heart disease, diabetes,, heart attacks ect ect. more ppl die from sugar than all the illegal drugs combined so actually yeh my example of heroin being a nasty natural chemical is nothing in comparison to the natural chemical sugar.. there is no comparison actually. a few thousands die from heroin whereas 100s of millions die from sugar.

    I don't understand how eliminating the chewing and swallowing aspect of the food helps? Texture is a huge part of enjoying a food or not. I can love broccoli, but I like it less when it's mushy rather than overcooked, even though the taste is the same.

    Years ago I tried it on my now ex-husband. I bought a huge tin of normal instant coffee which he liked. As time went on I kept the tin and added more and more de-caff coffee which he said tasted so awful that he couldn't possibly drink it, it was disgusting. After he'd been on pure de-caff for weeks, I told him. He didn't laugh like the speaker's husband, he felt tricked (yeah okay he was!) and that I had somehow got one over on him and made him look a fool (no he did that all himself when he threw his toys out of the pram....). Yup, point proved but it didn't stop him saying de-caff was disgusting - oh look cognitive dissonance...... He just sulked for a couple of WEEKS.......sad man....
