As a trane dealer. Wire nuts are fine on these units as long as there is dielectric grease in the connections. As for those saying not to call tech support, bad idea. You can not just warranty parts on this unit. Purchase of that inverter board prior to talking to tech support is $3000 out of your pocket. Purchasing that board prior to talking to tech support, they will refuse warranty(if applied). Tech support has to approve your diagnosis to allow you to warranty. Also, to check your dc voltage on this unit, use the 2 voltage pins on the bottom right of the inverter. Any other place will not be accepted by tech support.

Johnathon is correct. I work for American standard dealer. TRANE and AMS is the same. Same tech support. Call either and they will help. You must have diagnose from tech support to warranty. Also please ensure com wires are shielded. We install a lot of these units. There is also a much better diagnostic book for these units. You must attend a class to get the book but you may be able to find one online.

Not a fan of these communicating systems. I like the Bosch units that don't require one and you can read all the diagnostics at the condenser unit. WoW Curtis, these new systems are far to complicated, my origional reverse cycle A/C system was a Australian built " Email Air " it was installed in 1986 and replaced with a new split Daikin reverse cycle.. My Email Air was replacrd in 2020 due to the outside metal cabinet starting to rust out and even then it still run like new, heating and cooling, in that time it was service/checked over only a few times. 👍 Au

Electronics guy here. The noise is most likelly from the powersupply section of the main controller. It is caused by the magnetic field in the inductors causing things to vibrate. It can also becaused by the magnetic field that cause heating in the core, which cause some dillatation, which is movement, which is noise. This is usually not normal and often a sign of something that is or has failed..
The pulsing seems to indicate that the regulator is working in discontinuous mode, which should not happen. If it is the case, the output voltage can be unstable and very noisy. That make microcontrollers very unhappy.
As for wirenut, this is a low bitrate bus. Wirenuts are fine for those. If wirenut is an issue, then it mean you would require to crimp some terminals and connector, not use screw terminals. And most likelly require to use twisted pair, and not untwist anything. That said, it is a good practice to avoid them when possible.
RS485 or simmilar can work on very bad wiring condition. There is a reason why they use that in industrial machine, with wires close to high power motor wires. It is a pretty much rugged system.
For RMA, you are required to get an authorisation for almost every single manufacturers. Any warranty work need to be preaproved. The manufacturer will ensure that the repair guy is authorised and know what he is doing. A manufacturer and and does limit who can repair stuff, and that vary from industry to industry, car being the most open field. Failure to request the authorisation prior to the repair can (and will) void (part or all of) the warranty on the device!
Manufacturer usually encourage the authorised repair technicians to call them when they have anything that they are unsure about.

CDA is just a dumb monitor. Everything communicates by RS-485 twisted serial data link wire pair. Fact that CDA does not respond, and thermostat cannot communicate with outside unit means either a disruption like a shorted data line wire pair or something wrong with outside computer board.
Strange thing is outside compressor is running which I would think it should be dead if communications with air handler is lost. There must be coordination between air handler and outside unit on a variable speed unit. Having the outside unit running on its own would not be a good sign for condition of outside computer board. Outside unit should not be running if it does not receive control commands from air handler.
When units first power up there is a communication check between all devices. If there is a comm failure the outside unit should remain inactive.
Thermostat controls air handler and air handler controls outside unit. Thermostat can receive pass-through diagnostics from outside unit but does not directly control operation of outside unit.
The copper tubing loop on back of module is refrigerant flow heat sinking for three phase inverter that runs compressor. Should be clamping screws on back of module to free module from cooling tubes to allowing module to slide out upward from behind copper tubing.
Really scary thing is customer says her electric bill was abnormally high. That may mean outside unit has been running for over a month straight non-stop.

    some real help:
The voltage between the data high and common, or data low and common should be 2 & 4 volts DC.
A broken/open thermostat wire to an individual component will only influence that component. If a data line breaks to the outdoor unit, Link will show the outdoor unit is offline and generate a 94.00 alarm for a comm failure. Since the outdoor unit is offline, disconnect the wire connector at the outdoor unit and look for voltages. There is no voltage between white DH and common. If the indoor init is powered up with proper voltage, then isolation troubleshooting has confirmed a broken white wire (or failed connector).
A short on the data high DH will cause the communication bus to fail. Short between DH and DL, short between either DH to DL or R. A short between DL and C may allow system operation; but have intermittent communication errors.
There is a short somewhere, board may not need replacement

Communicating systems don't like wire nuts, they need a straight connection and need to be away from high voltage wire due to impedance. Also, inverters need a surge protector or this can and will happen as well. I think the board is the answer though. These systems suck.

    • @zacharyloewke6366

I second this. I use wago’s when I install these. There’s a reason the zone boards come with a handful of them from the factory. Running shielded wires and keeping them away from line voltage wires is paramount. Also, any inverter system should DEFINITELY have a surge protector at the disconnect or the panel. Could be something as simple as that. I’ve seen it before.

Yes. Start with the wiring and connections. Tech support will most definitely have you change a cda before they will authorize an inverter drive replacement. Like the other comments said, those aren't cheap. I've worked a lot with the AS side discharge communicating systems. They can be picky to dial in, but run great after. Very precise on the charge. When it hits 100°, 5-10oz extra on an 8lb factory charge system makes all the difference on whether the system will run or not. I try to dial them in on startup, but sometimes its so hard to simulate those hotter days. I live in eastern Washington and we definitely see temps over 100°

On the XV with comm errs first check 16v at j4 unplugged that proves the AFC is communicating which is likely bc the stat shows errors, plug j4 in and voltage on the back should drop to 12v if com to the drive is good… the CDA is controlled by the drive. If you can’t get CDA to do anything you likely have a bad drive but you’d need to run a drive test from the CDA to confirm. With what you have call trane and get a drive authorization. And do not lose the personality module in the process.
But they are super easy to replace, just did one Monday.

common mode voltage on rs485 communicating systems ranges from -7V to +12V DC. The noise you are hearing is a broken package on the bridge, FSD, or the IPM on the inverter board. Think of it in terms of its a switching mode power supply, if you are audibly hearing the switching, then you have a broken case insulator around said switching device.

The communicating type systems they are touchy about corroded wiring in the wirenuts so it could be corroded wires in the wirenuts for the com wires if they are not the dielectric grease kind of wirenuts. One thing you might try that is free is to power off both the indoor unit and outdoor unit, clean the com wire connections. Then power on the outdoor unit first, after about a minute for booting, power on the indoor unit. Wait 5 or so minutes for everything to boot and establish communications and see if the units start communicating and run normally. There are brands that require the outdoor unit to be powered on first to setup initial communications or if coms has been lost due to a fault to set up and establish the coms again.
