I about spit on my coffee when you quoted John MacArthur about lack of joy. I would NEVER associate him with being joyful. EVER

Attachment has been something I have been looking into as I (and my sister) are unpacking things from my childhood. I think it is important to consider how certain messages are interpreted by certain people. A recent example of this happened at church. They are doing a series about family and the focus was all about marriage. They contrasted the definition of family of the world to the "biblical" definition. The worldly definition was presented in a way to make it sound bad. The definition included people like friends.
I have an okay, but complicated relationship with my parents because they have not been emotionally available. The message made me feel alone. It felt like the only way I have a chance at "family" is through marriage. It's not true. It just wasn't a good way to start a series about family.

That pastor who thought that the vulnerable person in his congregation just needed to go out and get therapy before he could be ministered to, how different from the shepherd who left the 99 for the one that was lost.

We're not our children ALSO made in God's image too? If I could go back in time and change my parenting style as a mother, I would. "Because I said so," is not a good answer. They should know WHY, and have things explained to them. Yes, it takes time, but time, normal conversations and letting them express themselves with understanding and empathy to THEIR feelings is important. Take time with your kids while growing up. We as parents need to be their safe persons to be able to talk to and help them to grow into accountability, responsible functional adults who will thrive emotionally healthy in a world of chaos.
