You're absolutely right that the main themes of this show tackles real life issues that predominantly affect women. Take away the superhero element and this is a show about a woman trying to deal with the fallout and recover from an abusive relationship.
+Miles Curtis Watson Yes, totally agree. What I also love is that while she's scared and vulnerable after her abuse and suffers from PTSD from it, she isn't portrayed as a stereotypical "victim". You know what I mean? She's still strong and taking control of her life. And her fear, vulnerability, and PTSD is portrayed very realistically.
jOsEheRi Gonzalez I feel like you might have missed that absolutely no one said it only affects women and that the person you're going after literally said, " predominantly effects women." You're trying to make a half-assed argument out of nothing.
close enough. i think the main theme was how to deal with the feeling of powerlessness and being weak. but this show not just show the effects on women. the villain cope with make himself in power by abusing jess. malcolm's weakness was his drug addiction and he cope by changing this with workout and sex addiction. trish's thought seeking power will help her to fill the emptiness etc.
Eric you are the only male viewer that actually noticed the deeper meanings related to women. This show is dark and it's even darker for us because it touches some nerves. Sincerely thank you because this is the reason why I've always liked this channel so much, you guys are so intelligent.
I don't think that was being 'douchebaggery' at all Eric. I think it was considerate to see and take notice of that from the show were most guys would never notice or point it out.
She gets her ass kicked because she doesn't want to hurt people, she wont harm people under his influence. It the standard good guy weakness, they always play with the gloves on, hands tied, half measures etc..
What do you mean why does she rely on her strength? People forget that just because she has powers it doesn't automatically mean she's trained. Sure it isn't hard to punch someone but she still has no training.
+Ellie-Kate Ashmore But my main point is she DOES rely on her strength. In reality she doesn't need to train because as I said it's easy for anyone to throw a simple punch. Also I'd imagine it would be hard for her to control her strength whilst practicing anyway.
JackPlays I never really said that she doesn't rely on her strength because if i dead that would be false. I was just saying that she could've gotten trained first.
Before this show came out, there a set photo that leaked of Killgrave getting shot in public. Everyone online freaked out because they thought that some guy shot David Tennant and were franticly searching for hospital reports to see if he was okay. People were also trying to I.D. the shooter and found out that he was an actor. Eventually people figured out that this was just a scene that was being filmed. I find it funny every time I think back on this moment.
4:29 As a New Yorker and a huge fan of "Impractical Jokers" I laughed when Eric said he recognized the park from that show. Great reaction guys. Keep up the awesome work.
they will never think about david tennant the same again lol i love him as the doctor but this role was creepy as hell, in the later episodes you sympathize with him and its heartwrenching what happens
My older son and I are watching Jessica Jones for the first time and following along with your commentary. We like to find shows to watch together. This commentary made me laugh so much. Thank you, I appreciate it. Love your content, keep up the good work.
in case no ones mention it yet cause i dont have time to read all the comments the actor playing her drugged up friend is a former power ranger he was the red ranger for power rangers rpm
Hiphopopotamus I don't want to spoil stuff for whoever is reading it, so: Nothing in this season shows that she can "fly", she is just jumping from one place to another, even Melissa Rosenberg said before the release of the series that her character development is literal / figural jumping higher and farther than she could before. I'm not excluding the possibility of her actually learning to fly at some point, but to fly means to defy gravity and in MCU even Thor isn't capable of it. I doubt it very much that they would make Jessica fly even after however many seasons we'll get.
+Михаил Затрутин I just noticed none of the characters except for The Vision and Scarlet Witch, can fly (excluding iron man, war machine and his suits since their built, not a internal power.) and the reason for their flight (the vision because he's some type of God with a stone on his head.) and scarlet I have no idea actually. but it's amazing how they don't just give any super hero the ability of flight because they need some science but fiction idea element to go with it. like ant man shrinks because of pym particles, he doesn't JUST shrink. that's cool. in the comics, some gamma ray hits a person suddenly they can fly. not connected in anyway
She isn't knocking them out because of an unfortunate combination of self-restraint and lack of training, I would guess. EDIT: I agree that this whole season is a PSA for consent, which is great, and also the reason why Jessica doesn't bring Malcolm to Kilgrave...it should be his choice.
You guys are amazing! Even though this is a very slow series, thanks for sticking with it. I'm really digging everything Marvel/Netflix! We know DD S2 is going to be amazing, so now it's up to Luke Cage and Iron Fist series to be just as astounding a debut as DD and JJ were!
also jessica jones is a brawler, she was never fluent with her fighting also shes been a retired superhero for a while i think in this show, you guys can read alias 4 about the purple man, it doesnt really spoil anything, bc the show uses some new some old references from the comics, god i love this show haha
+Colt Baudoux She is always going on about how she doesn't want to hurt people that are under his control since it's not their own actions, so she always takes it too easy.
David did another villain role in 2005 ( same year as Goblet of Fire) as Brendan Block in Secret Smile. I won't spoil it for you but he was the template for Kilgrave without the mind control powers and just as deadly.
QnA: What do you think about both David Tennant (the Doctor) now being part of the Marvel Universe and Arthur Darvill (Doctor Companion Rory) being Rip Hunter in the DC TV Universe?
Kilgrave really is an amazing villain, that was a positive surprise for me because I'm not really a comic book fan :D Watching JJ was what made me check out Daredevil as well and I have to say that I'm now very excited for all these Marvel series that Netflix is making, even if I have literally zero knowledge about the source material. And if you wonder why, well comic books weren't really a thing here in Finland when I grew up, and I think they still aren't. I mean, I guess you can find them from somewhere (plus internet ofc) but they certainly aren't something that every kid grows up with here. Oh, and I agree with Calvin: Kilgrave > Kingpin
+Lauri Leppänen I feel he was great until about episode 6 or 7, whenever he explains what he wants and they play house, then he loses his creep factor for me as he is revealed as just a person who is just an overgrown manchild with no concept of consequences or empathy rather than the monster who revels in his ability to mentally torture and control other people that he is in the comics.
Hmm, interesting. Would you say that he feels like a human being at all in the comics or just a pure monster? Because I kinda agree that towards the end of the season as the mystery around him was washed away he didn't feel as scary/creepy anymore but at the same time I kinda like that they made him a believable human character - even though still far beyond redemption.
+Lauri Leppänen I think it's a good thing that you see that he is a human, I even felt sorry for him, when Jessica forced him to watch the videos. He is likeable.
The comic doesn't really spoil the show at all. At least one of you can read the comic and talk about it during the shows to see what they kept and changed. It'll also give you guys a better understanding of the character.
+Fabian Osorio Throwing his hammer, hovering by holding onto the hammer, when the hammer is thrown Thor himself as a son of odin controls the elements and creates a cushion of air to allow him to hover and wait for his hammer to return.
15:10 so think the difference between the two is not necessarily that Jessica was controlled for a longer period of time. It's that Jessica was raped. There was sex involved when Kilgrave was controlling Jessica - and then some of the other females through the show. And in no way was in any of this consensual. He raped them. He took away all control, choice, and agency. And that is a very, very large component of Jessica's PTSD. And why their reactions are more fear-based. Their violation was so much more intimate.
Wasn't she spying on Luke because he was sleeping with a married woman and the husband hired her. It's why he got jumped in the bar with the husbands rugby team. That's when she found out he had powers too. I think when she was researching him he found out the connection. She doesn't look too surprised
I think Jessica went down a little too easily also. I loved the show when I watched it but I did feel like they were kind of inconsistent with her powers. One second she can practically take a whole bar by herself and the next she is getting stomped into the dirt by three guys. It could be that she's holding back but considering how hard it took them to get Kilgrave you would think she would work a little harder to keep him.
Seems like tv villains for marvel have been so much better than there movie villains. Probably has to do with they can create a longer storyline for them. 1st it was Kingpin and now it's Kilgrave. The movie villains well unless you count Loki has never had this good of development.
DSP? Not sure what/who that is. But the Kaboom shirt is from Kaboom Comics, they send the shirt to Blind Wave in one of their Mailbags (not sure which one)
DbreezyGaming lol, okay. I just saw the crown and thought it might be. DSP, for the guy who asked, is a UA-cam and Twitch video game player that steals money from his fans, is terrible at games, and bitches and complains all the time over stupid crap.
"She needs to learn some martial arts." Yes, thank you Eric! You've just pointed out my one and only complaint about Jessica Jones, or at least the netflix series. I've never liked that she never bothers to learn how to actually fight. I feel like her strength goes to waste because she doesn't really know how to use it. Especially because I know how much it would benefit her. Knowing how to actually fight, how to actually move, defend, and attack would benefit her tremendously. Not only would she actually win these fights she should be winning, it would also help in situations like this where she doesn't really want to hurt people who are just being controlled.... she'd better know how to defend without causing serious harm, how to disarm and quickly and efficiently knock them out. It would help her in her profession, she'd know how to defend herself in a sudden attack and her clients. And ultimately, I think she'd learn more about her strength, how it works, and how she can use it which I think would also help settle and control her fear and anxiety that comes with her PTSD. In other words, almost therapeutic. It was a big oversight, imo, for the creators not to take that route. I thought for sure that they would in season 3, after Defenders where the stark difference in ability between Jess and the boys was incredibly noticeable. But, unfortunately, they didn't.
Am I the only one who thinks Jessica's and Luke cages powers is basically Supermans..... but like split between them. And real issues? Miles Curtis Watson Yeah bacause ONLY women have those kind of issued

"I just love David Tennant."
Me too, Calvin. Me too.
I literally just wrote the same comment before I saw yours 😆

"Is Trish robbing a bank in the 80s?"
I dont know why this made me laugh so much.
that costume trish showed in the flashback was her original jewel costume when she was with the avengers ...
Well when she was beat into a coma by the avengers after she knocked out scarlet witch
+illumiNATI lol true, jessica hasn't had the greatest time as a superhero lol
@@cratwane what issue?
@@coltbaudoux4466 what storyline?
I don't think that was being 'douchebaggery' at all Eric. I think it was considerate to see and take notice of that from the show were most guys would never notice or point it out.
Completely agree.
I thought that was perceptive of him
"Get outta the road you stupid sandwich!" That shit gets me every time lmao
It's not flying, it's falling with style.
darthnazgul LOL
Fun fact: The costume Trish showed Jessica is her actual costume when she was 'Jewel', her superhero persona/phase.
Kilgrave is 100% my favourite fictional villain in any media. For now at-least.
She gets her ass kicked because she doesn't want to hurt people, she wont harm people under his influence. It the standard good guy weakness, they always play with the gloves on, hands tied, half measures etc..
"and save ME for once!" goddamn that line hits hard
The costume that Trish showed Jessica is actually her costume from the comics .
What do you mean why does she rely on her strength? People forget that just because she has powers it doesn't automatically mean she's trained. Sure it isn't hard to punch someone but she still has no training.
Then she should get trained by Trish.
+Ellie-Kate Ashmore But she didn't realise Trish was training until a bit later and Trish is still learning so she wouldn't be able to help that much.
JackPlays They can do lessons together, or she can just get someone to train her. It isn't that hard.
+Ellie-Kate Ashmore But my main point is she DOES rely on her strength. In reality she doesn't need to train because as I said it's easy for anyone to throw a simple punch. Also I'd imagine it would be hard for her to control her strength whilst practicing anyway.

I feel like Jessica's "flying" in series is nothing more but how high can she jump with her superstrong legs.
Hiphopopotamus I don't want to spoil stuff for whoever is reading it, so:
